In terms of why Naomi didn't act like this before... I think that for all of what Audrey said we can still understand Naomi as a character who is going through her own evolution, and her relationship with Rebecca itself is evolving. At the time of Rebecca's first suicide attempt (which I imagine we can suppose happened around the same time as the Robert stuff did) a lot of things were different from now. Including: 1) Rebecca was much more under her control, only just getting into law school and still very much in the "make your path towards adulthood" phase. It's possible she was still living under Naomi's roof, and if not she'd only recently left it. Compare to now where Rebecca is not only a full adult living independently of her mother, but she has asserted that independence in many different ways since the show started. IIRC Naomi has herself accepted a certain amount of that independence. 2) We know that with the Robert situation she ended up in court; by the same token her suicide attempt was an actual attempt, not ideation, meaning it probably involved an emergency situation. Both those cases made it easy for Naomi to take the reins and presumably commit Rebecca involuntarily. Unlike this situation where she couldn't do that because Rebecca hadn't done anything to justify it. She herself said that her goal was to convince Rebecca to commit herself voluntarily. If so it makes sense that she'd need to act in ways she hadn't (thought she) needed to before 3) I think most critically, a major difference between this time's suicidal ideation and last time's suicide attempt is that this time, the last time happened. Naomi saw how her actions worked out then and how Rebecca is back in the same place now. I suppose we can also imagine she's spent a lot of those years low-or-high-key going over that event and trying to figure out what had gone wrong and what she could have done differently. Maybe her actions today are partly the result of that process.

So we just watched the next episode today. Spoiler, Naomi isn't in the episode. I really liked your points about how she saw how it worked out last time, I wanna see how this affects her. Ultimately Naomi loves her daughter but doesn't know how to be a loving mother really. I really wanna see what Naomi's response is. How does she react as Rebecca's parent? Will she change? Does she feel guilty?

IMHO if any type of people can handle a little well-timed gallows humor it's those that have had a mental health journey.
