I really enjoy the fact that they made the creative choice to cut away from Colin’s coming out to the team. As you guys said, it’s a private moment. As a gay person who’s been outed against their will before, I enjoyed them making the choice to deny the audience this access.

I think it's my favorite creative choice of the season. It was really relatable in a way that, true or not (not sure), felt like it had been planned by a queer person.

I worked for a Belgian club and the problem a lot of people don't understand about football clubs is that you have a group of players from all different kinds of backgrounds. It's hard enough to come out in Western culture, but the locker room of a football club isn't Western culture. It's a mix of often deeply religious people, both Muslim and Christian from South America, Africa, and the Arab world. And the goal of a sports team is to win trophies together. As much as I want it, it's not the place where the world gets changed. I know a few players who are out (for their colleagues) but it's not something that's get discussed because the reality is not everyone will take it well. And there are a plethora of subjects that just don't make it in the locker room because it would negatively affect the team. We had a Serbian player who grew up during the war in Yugoslavia, during an international fixture he tore down an Albanian flag being flown over the pitch, and it nearly sparked a war. All while at our team had two Bosnian players, and it never was a problem because those topics don't get discussed in the locker room. This is all great for TV and how we want it to be, but the reality is, that we're just not ready for this. Football is a real international sport, with people from different nationalities, not just different ethnicity or religious backgrounds. An Iranian Muslim kid from Tehran is different from a third generation Iranian Muslim kid from London.

That's an interesting point. We can romanticize it but you're probably right. Works on TV for now.
