Poor Betty. She gets some hate from the fandom, but she's the character I keep wishing to get to a better situation over the first few seasons.

Originally airing on July 19, 2007, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is Episode 1 of Season 1 of Mad Men. It is the 1st episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.1, placing it as the #6 ranked episode of this season and #63 out of all 92 episodes.

You need to react to Lost if you still haven't seen it!

Anika

Yeah, but it's still worth seeing it. I've seen it many times, with reactors, alone, and with others I've shown it too. Knowing a lot of things about it still doesn't mean you know everything, or witness the character developments, and the over all feel and visuals of it the way it's meant to be experienced.

Succession AND Mad Men? 🤌 Both are some of my favorite TV shows and have such a unique great quality in dialogue and character construction. Mad Men was that kind of show that used to win all awards but relatively few people watched but recently the internet has rediscoverd it :) saving this to watch later, I was already meaning to rewatch so good timing

Oh, man. I want to watch this with you because it's a really well done show... but personally I find it hard to watch. The world of a show "sticks to" me when I watch it, and the casual misogyny in this is hard to take. I really applaud the show for not pulling any punches on that, but oof. It's a lot. And it gets a LOT worse before it gets better.

This was the show that took AMC from "that channel that plays old movies" to a respected contender in TV production. I remember when Mad Men came out and everyone was like, "Wait--this show is on AMC??" And then Breaking Bad came out the next year and there was no turning back.

Youtalkingtome

Yes, it was those 2, and The Walking Dead was a hit in there at the time, too. AMC really jumped into the stratosphere fast.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, the pilot was definitely full of characters who seem hard to love, to put it nicely.

Don draper is to put it mildly full of faults but I relate to him/ like him despise that and love the show because it is more a study about a man that is constantly looking to find happiness and a sense of self while being depressed than about advertising and to me the brilliance of it is that it uses advertisement as a metaphor but also comments so much on it and the time it is set on. I know the pilot is not enough to capture any of that though lol. But Betty Draper, Joan and Peggy are also fascinating, even Pete who's a scumbag has a great character arc.
