very obvious references to dead poets society, but also some similarities to a particular episode of my so-called life, which aired around the time derry girls is set (and also featured some great cranberries needle drops).

I have never seen Dead Poets......please don't judge me lmao. It's famous enough that I got the references.

An obvious candidate to book-end this show is another female-centric comedy-drama, this time from south of the border, the (only) ten episodes of Bad Sisters (Apple+). Derry to Dublin is half the distance from Dallas to Houston, but very different worlds! The show is fantastic, fully deserving of its truckloads of awards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Sisters#Reception

Y’all crack me up. When I was 15 I wrote a poem about a boy I liked, the teacher gave me a B, I was so upset about it. And I read Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar and declared that I was changing my name from Joy to Melancholy. Oh teen angst! Ironically, I was a substitute teacher at my old high school after college and didn’t realize I was supposed to have cafeteria duty. The teacher that gave me the B was forced to stay an extra period to cover for me. :)
