I mean I'm sure you guys put this together, but its not about size or how intimidating a boss or hunter looks but their rank (level) in the universe. It's about the same as in video games where bosses are not necessarily scarier looking or larger based on their difficulty. Especially if you look at games from Fromsoft.

As to his motivations for killing them, keep in mind he literally had no choice. He was supposed to die, but "the system" intervened and saved him, except that it gave him a quest to kill all his would be murderers. If he failed to do that and showed mercy to even one of them he would have died himself automatically. His health restore was entirely dependent upon his fully completing his quest. Had he done anything other than what he had, he would've died himself no matter what.
