Sometimes when I forget to close the patreon tab, the video starts automatically in the background and I get jump scared by "What is up beautiful people of internet". That wakes me up in the morning lol

ellie

Pippa

Im so excited I love this film! I went to japan in 2017 and saw posters for this film everywhere. I watched it on the plane home and cried my eyes out it was so beautiful

tannie misser

Oh I was nodding along when Wes mentioned the unexplainable grief and longing™️ 😂 I don't know, I've been sitting here for a good few minutes thinking about it but I really don't know how to describe it.. Anyways, thanks for the reaction, this is one of my fav movies so this was a nice surprise!

H

I relate to Wes regarding that funny feeling about longing. I struggle with connecting with people in general so I always thought of it as a feeling that comes from wanting to wholeheartedly belong to something. I think if you have some kind of deeply rooted wish or desire that’s something along these lines and are also somewhat sensitive or whimsical, you’d be able to relate haha. The reasons probably vary like crazy but this is where it comes from for me. It’s like wanting to go home but feeling like home isn’t going to be anywhere on this Earth. Oh, I’m female too haha and I agree that I don’t think it’s a gender thing. You were probably onto something with the relationships thing instead. Love this movie and as always, love the insight you guys offer. It was particularly nice of you to share that song with us! (A song that I think sums up my weird longing feeling is SOS d’un terrian un detresse by Daniel Balavoine - check it out if it interests you ;>) Looking forward to any other anime movies you react to :D

JeremyLin

So excited for this! Can't wait to see your reaction to more movies

carocatowr

I cry my eyes out at the very end every time I watch this movie, such a weird felling to get a happy sad ending. Totally unrelated, I don’t know if you are taking up suggestions or if you’re up to watching non Asian movies but I’d love if you reacted to “Society of the snow” or “La sociedad de la nieve”. It’s such an amazing movie that was just released last year and it’s based on a true story that it’s ridiculously close to what happened in reality, the true story is widely know in the Spanish speaking community since it’s from Uruguay and it’s so weird to me that it’s not that well known in other countries, I think it would be amazing for you to react since I don’t think most people in the US know about it ✨

Lily Ramirez

This is one of my favorites movies ever. I cried a lot when I watch it and can put it to word why, because it's a happy ending but I don't know something lingers. A wonderful movie.

Victoria

Ahhh this is my 4th time watching this and it still made me cry 😭😭 watching this made me realize I missed so many things the previous times I've watched it so thank you! Please continue this great work and I will keep supporting however way I can!

Not my favorite anime movie, but I love it! And Makoto Shinkai's films are among the most visually stunning. Suzume is sublime! In the comments to another video, we mentioned the difficulty of translating all the nuances of Japanese into our languages. The scene at 30:20 is an example of hell to translate. To understand the humor of this scene where Mitsuha says "I" 4 times depending on the guys' reaction, you need to know that: (simplifying as much as possible) - "Watashi" is the feminine way of saying "I". It's the one most women use. (But when used as polite language/context, it becomes neutral and can be used by men. e.g. between colleagues at work). - "Watakushi" is a more sustained/polite form of "Watashi", also rather feminine (but also for men of high societal rank). - "Boku" is a casual, masculine way of saying "I". It contains the notion of humility. - "Ore" is a relaxed, masculine way of saying "I" for teenagers and men. It contains the notion of virility. Generally used between good friends. Impolite in society. Hence the reaction of the friends when she use the wrong ones in the scene ^^ There are also : - "Atashi" is a casual feminine way of saying "I". It contains the notion of femininity. - "Atakushi" is a more sustained/polite form of "Atashi". It's difficult, if not impossible, to translate all these nuances into a film.

We need “weathering with you” now its the next one in the miyazaki trilogy

Yes. Shinto is a type of belief system similar to what I practice, called Animism. Everything has a spirit, not a soul. Spirits can be kami, gami, youkai, ect. Very ambivalent nature spirits that are neither good or evil. Another animist culture is the Celtic. Creatures like the Fae (a Saxon insult mind you) rather known as the Tuatha de Dannon. What we know is witchcraft is traditionally the celtic shamanism or shamanism from the Norse. Today, it's more general and animistic in nature (it's not modern Wicca which many practice in a very religious manner and have deities) Shinto littlerally respects and worships the earth and all its plants and creatures which lends to the Japanese mindset of to be mindful of everything and treat everything with a sense of duty and kindness. (That's the idea anyway without corruption) Another common theme in Animistic beliefs and lore is the idea of an in-between. A liminal space between time or space. Between doors, across bridges. Between day and night or in water, across rivers or gates. Even just shadows. In this space, the veil between time, space, and realms is the thinnest so seeped into shintoism is this concept, which is why you see those red gates. You are entering a sacred space. The "Underworld" in this show is a mistranslation of this concept, so what they mean is they were entering a liminal space meant for the kami and spirits only (Spirited away takes place in one of those spaces if you recall her crossing the river and bridge) There is a true entryway to Yomi-no-kuni (the real underworld) in Japan that a video game called Fatal Frame plays with the concept of. Because twins are also said to be inherently connected to the spirit realm since they are a mirror of the same soul. A Liminal pair of humans. The game surrounds twins and this area. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yomi

New comment~ I also experience that feeling, but I think it's a form of regret. Like I'm a huge believer in parallel times because I believe in fate that is determined by your decisions as well as reincarnation, so there are times when I get existential and think how if I had made slightly different choices, things would've been. Particularly, I mentioned in a previous comment about how I had a brother I never knew. In fact, I didn't know about him until my adulthood. But I have an extreme sense of loss for my twin (Gemini twin) who I believe died so I could live and he still protects me. Even before I knew about him, I felt a part of me missing, keenly. I would look at myself in the mirror and instead of seeing myself, it felt like I was seeing another person who I'd even talk to. I also consider myself non-binary and genuinely thought I had DID (the current name for multiple personality disorder) because at times, even though I was never not conscious of the differences, it felt as if I have a male soul inside me. So I talk to myself really bad like I am talking to another person, sometimes I'd be a girl and sometimes very masculine, ect.. anyway, point being, when I learned about my brother, it clicked and I felt like I found my person but.. he's gone. I've never had a chance to have him in my life and I feel like I knew him all my life and he died, so I grieve him and the brother he could have been. The arguments we'll never have, the things we'll never do, and the protection he can't offer me from my father (he had a different father) that's my most extreme example because it's the strongest, but there are minor ones too like I feel like I miss living in Japan when I never lived there and felt like I lived there all my life when I went for a week. Or I feel like I miss the life I could have had without trauma holding me back.

Ooh so like how the teacher from Garden of Words appears in this movie!

YESSSSSS MY FAVORITE! this just made my day better

Leandro Calderón

Please watch "weathering with you" next, film by the same director as this movie.

Cool reaction. I'd like to clarify, that the Fire 200 Years ago, has nothing to do with the Comet. It is just a part of world building, to make the whole thread theme more mysterious, because the knowledge about all of that was lost to that fire, but the traditions remained.

bizarre☆azar

I’ve been putting off watching this movie for so long because I heard that while a really good movie, it’s also very sad. But I finally watched it with y’all, and wow—I’ve just been crying since Taki found out about the comet hitting the town. And now it’s just me in my room sobbing watching the two of you sobbing 😭 Everyone was so right about this movie! I’m sad I waited so long to watch it—I’m now gonna have to inflict this pain on others and get my mom to watch it lol

As gorgeous and touching as this movie is, I sadly cannot like it for one very silly reason: it completely overshadowed The Silent Voice which came around the same time and is a vastly superior movie. Also, as much as I enjoy romance with supernatural elements, the extremely wishy-washy nature of that element in this movie prevents me from appreciating the story. It just kinda feels like the story dictates how the magic works instead of the mechanics of the magic dictating how the story can go. And if that's the case, then I can't really be invested because every problem feels like "the writer will make the magic resolve it somehow". Symbolism is great, keeping SOME of the magic mysterious is fine, having the characters' feelings affect the magic is fine - but you gotta put it all on a strong foundation of understandable rules. Also, the romance is WAY too strong for a romance that was established via a bloody MONTAGE. Are you kidding? I buy that they could fall for each other, but the movie DID NOT earn that. Respect for Tessie though. I'm glad the hero got the girl. Next movie to watch: Summer Wars.

Henarivan Andhika

i agree with the magic stuffs seen as cheap, but i dont agree with the romance being too strong. People bonded romanticly for a widely different reasons, and i believe going through or surviving a crazy/traumatic experience with each other greatly enhance any feelings which is love. So i can kinda tolerate the magic and the sudden romance

Fiorela .

Omg yess!!! La sociedad de la nieve is so good I hope more people get to know it

Lala woods

Thank you so much for reacting to this movie. I wouldn’t have watched it if it weren’t for you guys and now I’m sobbing while watching you two 😩

I hate(also love, it’s complicated😭) movies that make me break down and cry at the end because you have to walk out of the cinema with bloodshot eyes and a wet face, still half crying and it’s sooo awkward😭😭they make you cry and then It’s like okay it’s over now get out. Your name was like that and Avatar twow was like that too, really broke me😭😭

Nele

oh wow... that was also my first time watching it and it was AMAZING... so heartbreakingly beautiful. i don't even know what to say, i'm so happy to have finally watched it !!!

Gabby Alonzo

Nice Vid as always! I wasn't able to watch Your Name in the cinema sadly, really one of the goat anime movies. Weathering With You next? >:)

I saw the band who did the soundrack for this movie—Radwimps— in concert in NYC. It was the best concert of my life, I was completely blown away; I got so emotional when they played the songs from this movie.

minjin batbold

I share Wes’ feeling of nostalgia/deja vu-esque loss, experiencing it on occasion; and I like the theory on it involving relationship with parents! 🥲

i love that you guys both cried at the end, its like you've been keeping it in the whole movie then you finally hear the ending song start, its like all the emotions you've been keeping in just all came out at once haha. Emotional rollacoaster, i remember thinking after this movie "gosh.. i need a fucking cigarette..." and i dont even smoke haha
