In Korea, women who are about to give birth eat seaweed soup to have a good birth (to honor the goddess of childbirth), and also helps with recovery (cause of the nutrients it has). So, Koreans usually eat seaweed soup on their birthdays as a thanks to their moms. I'm not Korean, just what I've read.
