Now, that episode was kind of special. The saga of Jason and The Argonauts, which saw many of the greatest warriors and heroes in antiquity join forces, and which saw them sail on the Argo to capture the Golden Fleece, is one of the most celebrated stories in Greek mythology. But this episode was actually more of an homage not to the myth, but to the 1963 film Jason and The Argonauts. This much-lauded movie was primarily the work of Ray Harryhausen, the legendary special effects artist whose mastery of stop-motion animation shaped generations of fans and future filmmakers. Some of the biggest names in cinema from the past 50 years at least would tell you of the huge impact that Ray had on them and their work, including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, and many, many others, including Rob Tapert, who directed this episode. The swordfighting skeletons in this episode were a direct echo of the swordfighting skeletons in the original film. The disclaimer at the end wasn't a disclaimer this time, just a statement about Ray Harryhausen's influence. ... Sorry about all that. This episode itself is very good, all by itself, and, intended as a sort-of sequel to the movie, it's really interesting to see a bunch of other heroes besides Herc and Iolaus, and to hear about a great quest that we don't see, but that took place much earlier. A great installment.
