Singin' in the Rain- Thank you so very much for reacting to this beautiful classic musical! I was really so excited to be able to introduce you to my all time favorite musical, and I am so, so happy that you loved this movie so much!! I am so happy that you love to watch any classic musicals, and I will absolutely continue to introduce you to many more in the future... including the original West Side Story from 1961 that stars Rita Moreno and a few more brilliant classic actors. I love Singin' in the Rain so much! It's a beautiful musical, and one of the very first movies I remember ever watching when I was a little girl, so I always feel such nostalgia every time I watch it again and again. I truly loved watching your reaction, Sora. Like I said... Singin' in the Rain is my all time favorite musical, and one of my favorite movies too. It's such a feel good movie, that makes me want to smile, laugh, cry, sing, and dance! There's something very special about the classic musicals I love so much. And Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds are all just phenomenal, and so much fun all throughout this movie!! I absolutely adore this movie and all of its characters. Gene Kelly's smile and his dancing abilities are beautiful and infectious, Donald O'Connor is absolutely hilarious and charismatic, and Debbie Reynolds is so beautiful and delightful. Don, Cosmo, and Kathy are such energetic and charismatic characters whom I love and will love forever. Gene Kelly is known to be one of the two most famous and beloved dancers of his time, and still today as well. Only Fred Astaire might surpass Gene Kelly's name in dance, but both of their styles of dance are very different and unique. They are both absolutely phenomenal! As for the actress and dancer in the green dress who dances with Gene Kelly throughout the Broadway Melody sequence... She is Cyd Charisse, the most famous female dancer of her time too. And she's sensational. Not to mention absolutely beautiful. :) In regards to how these song numbers are filmed and performed... they are all filmed in one-shot with no cuts in between, with the exception of the Broadway Melody sequence because it's performed in story form, with a number of scenes throughout it, and it's a lot longer than all the rest of the songs. Classical movies were filmed very differently in comparison to how they're filmed today. The way movies were filmed back in these early days of film, was so beautiful, fun, and unique in comparison to how movies are filmed today. Don't get me wrong... there are so many good movies and shows today too, but I absolutely love the classics such as this movie because the actors have to work so hard since they don't have CGI and all the cuts throughout their scenes to help tell their story. And classic movies such as Singin' in the Rain are truly special and unique. And just like you mentioned... actors back in these early Hollywood days had to work so much harder than they do today because they didn't have everything else to help take off some of the burden. It's incredible. The music within this musical, is all phenomenal and beautiful. Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds are sensational actors. As for my favorite song, or songs... it's really hard to say because I love them all so much. I love Singin' in the Rain sung by Gene Kelly, Make 'Em Laugh sung by Donald O'Connor, Moses Supposes sung and danced by both Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor, and Good Morning sung by all three of our main characters. They're fabulous!! And yes... the songs, Singin' in the Rain and Good Morning, and probably more, have most certainly been sung, performed, or played in a number of other shows, movies, in parodies, and even in commercials as well. I've no doubt you've heard them in many things over the years. In regards to the Broadway Melody sequence... the movie they are making is set within the modern day of that time, and is about a man who comes to New York seeking to make a name for himself on Broadway, in Vaudeville, etc... He wants to become a star. He soon becomes famous and is thrown into the big life where he meets and briefly falls in love with a lovely woman. Their love affair doesn't work out, but Don's character within the movie they're making continues to grow in fame and one day when waiting backstage to go on, a sandbag falls and hits him on his head, causing him to fall back into the time of the French Revolution, which is why he and Lina Lamont are wearing the French costumes throughout a majority of their movie. This was the big idea which Conrad comes up with for Don and Ron F. Simpson when he and Don are pitching their idea to turn their flop movie into a musical. Long story short... Broadway Melody shows what is going to be seen within the modern setting of the movie. And in regards to the ballet scene between Don's character and this mysterious woman... it shows us a moment where he daydreams of becoming a big dancing star alongside the woman he loves. But because she only cares about diamonds and other riches, their relationship and his dream of being famous with her quickly fades away. Fun facts for you... When Donald O'Connor collapses to the ground once he finishes singing his song... Make 'Em Laugh, it wasn't originally written for him to do so for the movie. Donald O'Connor actually did actually pass out just after filming this number, and the director and writers of this movie simply chose to keep this filming of the number in the movie. He was a four pack a day smoker and he became winded after working so hard singing and dancing during this song throughout the multiple takes. And boy is he so charismatic and incredible throughout this number. He made himself sick, yet performed this song over and over like it was no big deal, and like his body didn't hurt. That is dedication and love for his work. I absolutely love Donald O'Connor!! So much energy! Also... when Gene Kelly got around to filming his major song, Singin' in the Rain, as he performs the big dance number in the rain shown in this movie after he had rehearsed it a number of times, he had an extremely high fever and was very sick. However, you can't tell just how sick Gene Kelly really is because he acts so happy and his performance during this song is flawless. Again... devotion and love for his work. Sensational!! As for Debbie Reynolds... she was never much of a dancer before she starred in this movie. So she had to take many dance lessons and classes, and was helped a lot by her co-stars Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor. And she danced right along with them like she had been dancing for years. Amazing!! And they were all such good friends for many, many years. Also, in case you don't really know Debbie Reynolds from any of her modern, or present day movies and/or shows she's guest starred in, or simply know this in general... Debbie Reynolds is Carrie Fisher's (Princess Leia from Star Wars) mother. They were very close, and when Carrie Fisher died the day after Christmas in 2016, Debbie Reynolds sadly died the day after her daughter died, and their surviving family members say that Debbie Reynolds died of a broken heart. Which is so, so sad. What a tragedy. Debbie Reynolds is an actress I truly miss. Carrie Fisher too. I love Lina Lamont too. Her voice is hilarious and Jean Hagen is brilliant in this role. As both comedic relief and as this movie's antagonist. Her character throughout this movie makes me think of Marilyn Monroe a lot, from her voice to her ditziness. Is Lena dumb? Not really, but she isn't the smartest either. However, there's definitely more to her than Don, Cosmo, Kathy, and Mr. Simpson ever knew because she's most certainly conniving. She just ruins her own career all by herself because she allows for her pride, jealousy, and stubbornness to bring her down. Is it wrong that the higher ups within the studios stifled Lina Lamont and kept her voice a secret by not allowing her to be seen in the spotlight? In a way... yes. But this was how Hollywood was back then, and it's even how Hollywood still works to some degree even today too. Sadly... a great number of actors and musicians, especially child stars, wind up getting into drugs and alcohol in order to help them cope with the pressures forced upon them. And why so many of them have died from overdoses. It's very, very sad. Also... a lot of actors and especially actresses lost their acting careers when silent pictures went away and talking pictures, or "talkies" became so popular. It's truly unfortunate, and even unfair for them, but it's true that people would ever go to see the movies if the actors and actresses in them can't act. Sadly... most of the actors and actresses within this movie are all long gone. Debbie Reynolds out lived everyone, with the exception of Rita Moreno, who plays Zelda... the Hollywood actress within this movie who blabs to Lina about Kathy trying to take her career away from her. Rita Moreno is the only actress within this movie that I know of, to be still alive. And I deeply miss all three of these movie's stars... Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds very much. I grew up watching a number of their movies, and have loved them since I was a little girl. Thank you very much again for this reaction from you, Sora!! There definitely is something very special about classic musicals indeed! Yes, that's a thing they also did in La La Land, filming in one shot. The more I learn from classics the mroe I'm impressed with how they did La La Land and am very happy the Oscar thing was a mistake lol mind you I havent seen Moonlight (I think that's the name of the movie that actually won) Not only they had o work arder, the pay was also less as far as I know. There are also many parodies of a person going to X city or Broadway to try to make a name for themselves, I guess that comes out of this movie too. Honestly I think its a very great way to pay tribute to the classics. Thank you for explaining that secuence! 4 packs a day?! that's crazy D: That really is dedication. OMG CARRIE FISHER'S MOM?! That is a very sad story, you can indeed die of a broken heart... I still cant believe Carrie is gone. 2016 and it feels like it was yesterday.
