Don't get me wrong. I liked them together to when i watched it the first time. But they are toxic. Both of them. Not just spike to be clear. He just does not see the toxicity but Buffy does which is why it is killing her and not him. It is weird how things that are bad for us seem to attract us the most. That william at the end there really shows that she cares for spike yes but love him no. Whedon had to keep reminding the audience of what spike is because like you they kept forgetting what he is because of his charm and attractiveness.

They are, but I like them together, even when pre-soul, yes it is 100% toxic and unhealthy but by far the most complex and interesting relationship on the show, and that’s why I like it so much. I think buffy does love spike, she can’t quite admit it to him or anyone including herself for obvious reasons, but she does and there are quite a few scenes that proves it: in “dead things” she repeats to Her friend what he had said to her “you always hurt the one you love”, is it healthy? No of course not, but doesn’t mean it’s not love. Spike without soul, as much as he loves buffy, is unfortunately incapable to love in healthy way, he’s only passions, without rationality, he sees love as irrational and passion, that burns, which is not healthy. Buffy on the other hand is not in a place where she can love in a healthy way either, she’s back from heaven and she she can’t feel anything, in s2 her and spike were already very similar, she tells Kendra that her emotions give her the strength,, and spikes emotions are so strong that even despite lack of soul he still has humanity in him, as the judge puts it. Back then they say they’d both rather fighting each other, because they perceive each other as equals, they’re both driven by passions. Now buffy doesn’t have this anymore, she feels alive again only when she’s with spike. She loves him but she takes it out on him, because she hates herself and she can’t accept to be in love with him because he’s a “soulless evil thing” and she can’t accept that he truly loves her because that would mean that angel without his soul was still himself and he couldn’t love her the same. Another thing I really like about their relationship is the dynamic of power and control and gender reversed, buffy is in the role of the tortured hero who’s normally the man, and is tempted by the “femme fatale” spike.
