Spock's limp was from the unseen battle that they mention on Rigel VII. So the trial footage is actually the original pilot, "The Cage." A minor writer's strike occurred early on and they were running out of completed scripts to film. Rather than shut down production, the creator of the show, Gene Roddenberry, decided to use the script that NBC had originally turned down and just add in the trial as a framing device to take up two episodes and get them through until the writer's came back. This is why I told you to skip "The Cage" since "The Menagerie Parts 1 and 2" basically reproduces the entire episode. So not only would you be watching it a second time, but you'd also know already why Spock is taking the Enterprise to Talos IV. I think, for once, Star Trek is the Pixie Dust you're most looking forward to next week lol. They will recap what happened in Part 1 at the beginning of Part 2, so don't worry about forgetting anything important. Can't wait to see your reaction.
