It's a hostage negotiator's job to settle the crisis as peacefully as possible. Snipers aren't perfect, and a misplaced shot would almost guarantee dead hostages as well. Of course, in this case, the kill order should've been given.

Bruce Willis playing a cop in the middle of a divorce who's thrust into a hostage situation. Might as well have called this Die Hard Light, but with a more psychotic villain. I hope you're happy though, you jinxed the fish. The accountant father would be brought up on federal fraud charges at the very least. In exchange for information on the people he worked for, they'd probably drop the charges and put him and his family into witness protection.
