For someone to want to kill others, they have to have sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies. A lot of those soldiers surely have that in them, but a lot them don't as well and don't know the horrors of war, and many probably don't see combat stationed in a desk somewhere or cleaning decks or translating or other functions. That's why in the States a lot of veterans return mentally broken and suffer for that for the rest of their lives like PTSD (post-tramautic stress disorder). So I believe Kate's "fake" dad, that he doesn't have murder in his heart. Which says a lot about Kate, who is then suffering her own PTSD on the Island after encountering a possessed Wayne/Sawyer. It's guilt but her own black horse will set her free. Fun fact, in the original broadcast on TV, you could see the horse trainer's hand directing the horse. That was fixed in later showings and the DVDs, etc. That was BIZARRE. Hahah glad they could fix that! I understand, but still if you're becoming a military you must know that at some point you're gonna have to kill or get killed, at least that's what I believe
