LG C3/G3 new possible auto-dimming issue (and fix) (Patreon)
Content
Hello everybody,
I'm reading numerous reports of LG C3/G3 OLED owners facing a new possible auto-dimming problem when using ALLM + Filmmaker Mode + DTM when gaming where the picture seems to gradually and noticeably dim and not recover even while moving the camera or playing normally.
This seemingly started to happen only recently after a non-specified TV firmware update and/or console update (mainly reported on PS5), but no one sent me an hard proof of this yet...
Personally I never had this issue on my G3 when using all my recommended settings for it and for Xbox/Playstation and PC, so, if you're one of them, here's what you can do to fix the issue:
1) Turn off the TV and unplug it from power outlet for 10 minutes, then re-plug it and turn it on again. Go check if the issue persists or not;
2) Double check (if not TRIPLE check) that ALL settings are exactly setup as suggested here (see the table for most updated ones, while you can watch my video guide to better navigate each menu/input). Seriously, sometimes the TV may re-enable some garbage setting like AI Brightness or AI Genre Selection or some Energy Saving stuff after a firmware update, so go check again and kill them in case;
3) if you're gaming on PC, also follow my specific guide for it here
4) If you're still facing the issue, make sure to be on Filmmaker Mode preset during a gaming session, then use ColorControl to force-enable HGIG in FMM instead of DTM, then change both system-level HDR Calibration app and in-game Peak HDR Luminance to 800 nits (for C3) or 1.500 nits (for G3) and see if the issue is definitively fixed this way.
Personally I'm currently using ALLM + VRR + FMM + HGIG (forced via ColorControl) for gaming on G3 and I had zero issues for months, even after all firmware updates.
This way HDR games never looked better for me on G3 (when I'm able to exactly set them up to 1.500 nits in my case), but let me know in the comments what is your experience right now and if any of those suggestions did actually help in fixing the new auto-dimming issue for you (or not).
Oh and Happy Holydays! :)
