The game is NOT using/applying Xbox/Playstation HDR Calibration app settings.

NOTE: These settings are only valid after The Witch Queen DLC + Patch.

Destiny 2 HDR implementation always was one of the worst with little to no control over it + crushed blacks and mismatched contrasts.

Luckily things have radically improved after one of the latest DLC / Expansions "The Witch Queen" and its related patch to the base game.

Now the game has a totally different HDR settings page with proper "nits" selection:

If you have an LG OLED and:

> you're using Dynamic Tone Mapping or Dynamic Contrast:

  • Set Peak Brightness slider to: 2.000 (nits; Max);

> you're using HGIG:

  • Set Peak Brightness slider to: 800 (nits) or 1.000 (for G2) or 1.500 (for G3).

If you don't have an LG OLED and:

> you don't have an HGIG option:

  • Set Peak Brightness slider to: 1.000 (nits);

> you're using HGIG:

  • Set Peak Brightness slider to the corresponding real Peak HDR Luminance of your TV in "nits".

In all cases the "Midpoint" slider will not change the gamma/exposure entirely but only the black/shadows part. Leave it to 50 for the most balanced PQ.

BONUS:

  • Disable Film Grain: to improve both clarity and contrast of the picture.

Do you recommend DTM or HGIG for this? & why do we have to set the peak brightness all the way to 2000 for DTM?

Try with my suggestions for HGIG first. If you find it too often too dim, switch to my suggestions fot DTM. Dynamic Tone Mapping (or "Active HDR") was created in 2017 by LG mainly for improving HDR rendition in Movies (it's still enabled by default in both HDR Cinema and HDR Filmmaker presets) and most movies are mastered with a 4.000 nits reference Peak HDR Brightness, so if you're able to also set games like that it will work best, otherwise it would still try to adapt any other Peak HDR Luminance you throw at it for the actual 800 nits of the panel (e.g. Destiny 2 can only go up to 2.000 nits, so it is advisable to stick with that when using DTM if 4.000 nits aren't available).
