Yoona Kim

bro im at episode 6 just finishing it all so i can watch ur reaction

Vader

The acting is not good

Goon

I'm 2 episodes in and it's mid, ok at best.

Rik De Greef

Let’s GO!! I was planning on watching this alone and then this pops up on my notifications. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for real!

kai

the dialogue and acting got me cringing so bad

Cold_Cyber

I wonder why they didnt add the water tornado avatar state scene also imo pacing of first episode is way to fast

Faisa Hersi

So excited when I got the notification.

iu

*sigh* i knew it was too good to be true

Apathina

I'm sorry but I probably wont be following along with you guys on this one. Not your fault its how AWEFUL this show is. Downright offensive what they did. They sterilized the characters so they wouldn't be "offensive" which just removed all potential for character growth (they are literally supposed to be immature kids growing up due to war). They also removed all humor and all meaninful moments -Sokka kicking Aang out for tripping the boat trap -The tribe being only toddlers and elderly people (why is Sokka leader with other people his age there? -Aang coming back to save them -them learning hes the avatar when he sacrifices himself to save them taking responsibility for bringing the firenation there due to triggering the trap -the entire cool scene where Aang taunts the firebenders winning against them with his hands behind his back -the ship getting destroyed by him causing an avalanche -worst one is removing Katara hugging Aang out of the avatar state -pretty much every Appa scene oh and how could i forget... literally Aang FLYING... thats a HUGE break in plot (those who know know) I mean I could write a 10 page essay on the things they removed/changed, most of which were intentionally changed to change pivotal character traits/story tone Even after all these offensive/terrible changes the pacing is also just terrible...

Alyn

Yeah I don’t know how to feel about this live action to be honest

Faisa Hersi

FYI They did know Aang was avatar since he was a baby. Might be a SPOILER if you haven't seen it yet in the show. Every baby of the next cycle goes through a test when the previous avatar passes away. They had to pick 4 toys from hundreds and Aang picked the same four the previous avatars did because he was already familiar with it. The elders aren't supposed to announce the next avatar until they're 16 but Aang was an exemption because the war started and they needed him.

Apathina

If you are referring to the time Aang damages Zukos ship its because they wanted to give Katara a (premature) "clap for the strong independent woman" moment. For the record she IS a strong independent woman but more so over the show she comes into it... not day 1 out of nowhere with one millisecond of training from a non-water bender.

Emil Yi

I don't know to feel about the airbenders or at least Aang being able to fly/float mid air like that without a glider especially this early in the story... I won't say much since it'll be explained in Korra and I don't want to spoil details, but this is definitely better than the Live Action Movie lmao. Sokka is absolutely the highlight of it all.

Jose martinez

When aang was a kid they knew the next Avatar would be an air nomad obviously but in one of the episodes aang said something about the monks setting out toys all in one room and aang chose the 4 toys that all passed avatars had chose and wanted to wait to get was older but the war came and forced them to tell him early hopefully that clears things on

EZ-3k!3!

I guess they didn't put that in because they wanted to keep that by the end of the episode when he saw the corpse of air nomads. For the pacing of course, two Avatar states in less than 10 mins can ruin the pacing, it wont have as much shocking effect as it is now.

Yoona Kim

When it first came out I wasn't sure about the actor playing Zuko "Dallas Liu" cuz of his round face and just didnt like it but now he kinda sounds more like the original actor.

Apathina

FYI some of the cast might not be portraying the characters well because the director intentionally (self admitted) changed some characters personalities. For example taking away Sokkas sexism (even though its supposed to be a bad trait he grows from through meeting powerful women), removing most of Aangs sidetracked childishness which causes him to joke while fighting and go on "vacations" in the middle of a war (his defining feature which is literally why he ran away in the first place), and they stated they want to take away Kataras "motherly" side in favor of making her only a "warrior" (cause the director thinks you can be only one and not both). So a lot of meaningful scenes will never exist, like Sokka admitting when he tries to picture their mothers face he only sees Katara or the entire Kiyoshi arc wont be the same with Sokka. (idk haven't watched anything besides Ep 1 this is just my hypothesis based on the directors own words.) I dont even want to know what they will do with Toph... its safe to assume they are too scared to even THINK about including her typical humor around her blindness. Its rather ironic, for a show "trying to be more like Game of Thrones" (their own words) they sure are doing a lot of babyfying....

Apathina

Yea the flying thing was really really stupid. He has always used a glider and its made even more stupid when he (out of nowhere) picks up a glider and flys with it. It genuinely breaks the worlds power scaling and shows the director doesnt understand the source material.

Apathina

He sounds good but personally visually I really really dont like Zuko or Azulas casting. They are supposed to look menacing with very striking features (sharp jaw, pale skin contrasting with pitch black hair and bright yellow eyes) so their super rounded soft features make it hard to take especially his raging seriously.

EZ-3k!3!

Thats right, and in asian culture, that's called ”抓周", they believe that the toy you pick as a kid will tell us what kind of person you will become, and what job you will be doing.

Monkey D. Luffy

Was so excited for it. Then I binged it. Turned to hulk and smashed my screen.

Apathina

Lol frankly they dont have to ruin about ruining the pacing they already did. Ignoring all the changes it had really bad pacing by itself.

Troy Straughn

I guess I might be alone here but I really liked it so far! The bending was fantastic. The actors are accurate, Sokka is hilarious, the air nomad genocide was brutal and I love it. Everyone forgets that it is a live action with way less episodes to work with. The gave us a bad ass prologue that we never got to see in the cartoon. And they kept the plot moving in the right direction. I've read some people not liking it cuz it's missing some small things that we all know and love. But remember they have way less time to develop the plot, and have to keep the pacing going. If you go into this expecting a shot for shot, or expecting to disappointed you're just setting yourself up to not like it. I'm really enjoying this because we get to see stuff that we didn't get to see in the cartoon. I have the cartoon show memorized, I don't need to see that again. Plus a lot of the changes make more sense anyway. Like Gran Gran telling the classic line about the fire nation attacking, rather than a child Katara. In native cultures, actually in most cultures, the elders are the ones that share stories and are knowledgeable about this stuff. Idk, I just think people gotta have an open mind. It's a frickin adaptation! Animation to live action is difficult for many reasons.

Apathina

People arent necessarily expecting a one for one but they took out meaningful scenes and personality traits on purpose to fit their own narrative. (like Aang not being childish, Sokka not being sexist/egotistical, and Katara not being "motherly")(all things the director said they intentionally did). They also in the first episode alone removed important Aang x Katara moments that build their CANNON relationship. - her being the first person he sees - her defending him against Sokka and even trying to leave the tribe ALONE to go save him - her hugging/talking him out of the avatar state

Michael

Zuko and Azula casting choices were so bad

Scar

I never watched the anime and I really was never gonna watch it. This will be my first time here watching with you guys anything Avatar.

Anonymous

I think they are doing a good job so far

EnzoTorales#1Hardenfan

Nah bruh I’m sorry but the acting is so mid/bad not even hating but at least is decent

Troy Straughn

idk, did you watch the same episode? haha jk jk. Most of what you listed happened. Sokka being sexist/egotistical was still totally present, it may not have been the same lines that are obvious and in your face, but the personality says it all. He's also hilarious lol. Katara was being the hopeful motherly figure the whole time, basically every time she was on screen. And Aang was childish in every spot he needed to be. He's obviously not gonna be childish during certain moments especially after learning the history of the world and his culture, it'd feel rly weird actually for him to be goofy at those spots. But every other time he was on screen he was bein the little troll he usually is. Katara not being the first person Aang sees isn't rly THAT big a deal tbh. She was spending the most time with him anyway. We saw them bonding already just by being benders. We saw her desperately telling Sokka that they need to go save him, just like the cartoon show. And Sokka surprising katara by already being on the same page. Just like the cartoon show. Now her hugging/talking aang out of the avatar state did slightly change, however I am totally okay with that change. Tbh it makes more sense that Gyatso was the one that did it. Especially since we got a whole ass prologue and saw much more of their bond then we did before. It was kind of the theme of this episode. This episode sets up the story nicely, where will we hopefully get to see their personalities and relationships really devlop. If it doesn't then, well, that would rly suck lol. But im still as hopeful as katara. I'm not gonna pretend that there aren't some weird things, but I think you may be jumping the gun on it, and being overly critical. I haven't seen the other episodes yet so it could go south but so far I think they've done a good job. I try to just watch the show as it is. Just my opinion tho, and thanks for pointing those details out.

Troy Straughn

oh hey i apathina lol, i just replied to ur reply on my comment. But I gotta point this out. You can't expect live action characters to look the exact same as an animation. This is one of the reason why adapting animation is very difficult. Becuase animation can be very detailed and specific, so when you adapt it, you have to find an actor that looks the part. AND can actually act, portray the character correctly, have good chemistry with the other actors, etc.

iu

bruh why is aang flying without the glider🤦and yea the glider somehow materialized onto the ship

sam

I think it’s alright, but a lot people are complaining about parts missing or being skipped over. I feel the same but in order for those parts to be in, the episodes would have to be a lot longer and the season be longer too. The only thing I don’t like is that they changed the personality of our favorite characters to fit what is “acceptable” in society. It takes away the growth that they would have had to go through to be the characters that we love so much.

Yoona Kim

Just Azula like I didn’t like zuko at first but like he kinda sounds like him tho

Jimmy

Personally I feel like the writing is corny as hell and the acting/delivery for most of the characters are subpar. They made a lot of the characters dryer and more serious which kinda defeats the purpose of what the cartoon represents. I don't mind them being different but everything feels forced and lazy imo

Ryan Alspach

when aang gave himself up, zuko took the glider from aang. which was also dropped by appa when he first landed after being called by aang.

sam

In the show zuko took it as a trophy when aang surrendered and had it put in his room

Michael

They both look awful as Zuko/Azula and don’t get me started on line delivery

Efren

I used to work at Netflix here in Hollywood and yeah the Creators left in 2020 from creative differences

komuro

rurouni kenshin live action movies are best live action for me ;)

Jacob Young

The original writers of the cartoon left due to creative differences. Netflix is gonna change some things , but the original writers are making their own avatar stuff , called “avatar studios”. Check it out some cool things announced on there that’s coming out within couple years .

Trinature

At least its not worse than the movie

KeenEye

21:55 I believe for Aang they did a test with thousands of toys and he was the only child who chose 4 toys from past Avatars. Honestly, season 1 is definitely the hardest season to adapt of ATLA as there tends to be a lot of side quests in the beginning and 20 episodes needing to fit into 8 is almost impossible with so many small missions and none of them really connecting + needing to introduce all the characters that appear in S2 and S3. I understand why they made a lot of the changes they did but I think there were a few missed opportunities - and I hope we get a Season 2 because that is where the story becomes more cohesive and easily adaptable imo.

Trinature

29:17 does he mean the air? Just fly around? Why didnt they stick with Aang "running away" from the responsibilities?

GentleCrank

Aang already had the glider with him when he was encased in ice, but Michelle is right. He bought the whistle way later

Saith Uchiha

I’ve only seen Avatar once but avatar “nerds” (don’t be offended I’m a nerd to a lot of things) I wish to control lightning lol but they said even my personality is like a fire bender. So what do you think you’d be? Tbh I’m curious based on personality this is for all comments what do u think you’d be?

Christopher Hopwood

just talk about the show as you feel fit obvi not to spoiler but if anyone watching this hasnt watched the animated first they dont deseve the thill from the live action

Juan Contreras

I watch the first 3 ep at work and so far I really like it. the fighting scenes the bending and the fact they’re actually killing people

Trinature

1:19:49 Thats crazy to say after one episode :O Especially if u watched the Cartoon and know how the characters progress...

Liana Pagodova

i think when the avatar is born you would know right away that he is the special one.like his arrow would glow. and i think it happens the same day the previous avatar dies

Cold_Cyber

uhm air is great matchup against fire xD the only reason they won was cuz of the comet since air also has nitrogen but thats not the only reason just wanted to let you guys know

Cold_Cyber

I dont get it its a multi billion dollar company they have the time and money to put 1 more episode to fix the pacing for example, I guess its all about getting as much money as possible in a shorter time.

Cold_Cyber

sokka being sexist was non-existent, you cant call that sexist in the least bit. no hate just my opinion

Cold_Cyber

yes but also you have to remember its a multi billion dollar company

Michael H

The acting was definitely rough, but it’s a cast of children for the most part, so I’ll give it a pass. Personally I’m glad they diverted from all the humor of the original. I feel like it would feel kind of weird seeing that in a live action. Like when Cowboy Bebop adapted Ed one for one…shudder…

Dale Diaz

off rip it's really frustrating listening to you guys try to theorycraft without trying to spoil the original show that's been out for 19 years. I would safely bet that the people who: A) had no interest in avatar for 19 years B) sub to you C) haven't watched your ATLA reactions D) haven't seen the live action E) are deciding to watch it for the first time with you is exactly zero lol

Michael H

I’ve only seen the first episode, but it was honestly way better than I was expecting. The choreography and effects of the bending is cool, the cast looks the part, and I don’t mind the changes so far. I’m actually glad they toned down the humor that I love so much in the original because I feel like it would just come off strange in a live action adaptation. The acting, though…yeah, that was rough lol

CE Ong

The fact that they made Aang fly in episode 1 makes me 99% decided to not continue this series...

Hertog

Personally I think its ass

Ju Chen

So many of y’all saying that Aang flying is a plot hole when skilled airbenders have always been able to fly by bending the air around them. It feels like people are just hating to hate. *spoiler* what happens later is akin to weightlessness not just flying.

shootie-san

There’s people saying you shouldn’t compare them but i disagree. They wanted to call it Avatar: The Last Airbender so I think it’s totally fine to compare. Even justified. Expected. And I think the show’s fine. Not amazing but not bad

Susanom

Idk why do we need adaptations to watch the same thing again and again. I get adapting novels/text to visual, but from animation to live - what's the point? Often the beauty of a story is expressed much better through animation. The only thing that makes sense is to reach new people who haven't watched the original.

JeremyRD LaMaxima

That was more like using airbending to fall slower rather than my flying, but Ig that makes someone not want to continue the show 💀

CodyAng

I think the action is good, the cgi is good, but the acting and writing fall flat imo, but overall still fun

Noah G

I'd agree that the backstory is much more laid out compared to the cartoon, but character wise the relationships feel rushed for me.

Michael H

lol I understand where they are coming from since they’re always pretty considerate about spoilers, but when you break it down like that…yeah…

Jordan Crawford

there is a way they know he's the avatar, not sure if yall have seen the part that it explains it but yes there is a way.

Jay rellim

they knew aang was the avatar bc when he was a baby he chose the exact same toys as the past avatars. it was in season 1 episode 12

Dale Diaz

Nah it was clear in the anime. Everyone born the time roku died were presented toys. Every air nomad incarnation of the avatar chose the same toys in each of their lifetimes. That's how they knew it was ang

Anonymous

There is some ehhhhh pretty bad acting in this lmao

castulo

Right!!! Especially Aang and katara for me. And a lot of the dialogue is iffy too.

B-Rad

If some of you really think he was flying, then I can pick a lot of moments from the cartoon where he was "flying"

castulo

You guys tend to forget things that happened before 😂. It’s hard to listen tot you guys just talk about references that you guys don’t even remember..

castulo

They are not born with the arrow tattoos. They are given to them once they master air bending.

castulo

But I think sokka’s actor is be best one out of all of the kid actors. So I don’t really mind them taking out his sexism. As long as the acting, dialogue, and delivery is good. I didn’t mind changes. But the acting is mid imo

eric

Can anyone think of a legitimate reason for why they made the decision to have Katara block Zukos fireball and not Aang? Other than the egregiously obvious reason...

castulo

Nope, but it’s not a big deal. What I didn’t like was them not showing more fighting while Aang was escaping

Schrammbo

yeah it gave me a bit of a mary sue feeling. like a few hours ago she could wobble the water a bit around and now this.

Apathina

No it was definitely a "strong independent woman" choice. Which she IS one but like... not YET bro lol shes supposed to fight the patriarchy and learn LATER. Its probably the same reason they completely removed ALL Katara x Aang scenes. (like her hugging him out of avatar state)

Apathina

I agree he did a great job I just think they removed elements of their characters that made them interesting/grow as people.

Apathina

yeaaa i mean at a certain point I think its a bit ridiculous for ANYONE to complain about spoilers especially for something made so long ago and being watched CURRENTLY by the people producing the content. I understand their fears tho cause people will always complain at the slightest hint of a spoiler.

Apathina

I wouldnt necessarily agree with some of the cgi though. They made some ... interesting choices with full body CGI. Like the close ups on Aangs face during avatar state, his entire face/body is completely CGI and it doesnt even look like him. Looks like AI honestly lol

Susanom

They probably focused on finding visually similar characters, and did a worse job than the trash movie in my opinion.

Susanom

These people do everything to promote independent women but create original stories for them. That means they want to hurt the existing stuff, aka it's insecurity driven.

Haidar Mashlab

Personally, I wouldn't mind if you guys just dropped this and just made your schedule lighter.

Surya

hear hear, its not nearly as good as one piece live action in terms of adaptation

King G

drop the series no one wants to watch this

Susanom

Is it good or one piece fans are used to trash? I watched a few trailers and it was cringe. But I can't say much to people who still watch one piece after it got shitty. The first few arcs were awesome though

Haidar Mashlab

I found the one piece live action cringe too. I don’t really like live actions in general, I don’t think they’re well done. The medium doesn’t translate well

Sean

acting is so bad lol

Afraz

The visuals are sick, the set, the choreography is pretty cool the acting is a bit awkward it is a hit or miss sometimes but other than that this is a success in my book turning anime into live adaptation. The live adaptation game really changing for the better and setting high standards

volociti

I thinks it's really good sometimes the acting was cringe and awkward but other than that they nailed it it was something I would watch again cgi was so good i thought the sky bison was real

iu

first half of my comment still stands jeremy

volociti

Are u talking bout the anime if you are your totally wrong u just didn't have the patience to get past that in terms of animation and storyline one piece is one of the best u prolly not past ep 200 the eps that are coming out rn will leave you on the edge of your seat

Camilo

I thought this was a huge let down, pretty disappointed in the live action

Joshua

I finished the show and it's not bad, but it's also not good. It's like a 5.5/10 for me. To me, an adaptation doesn't have to be 1-1 and it shouldn't be, but MAIN character traits from the MAIN Characters should transfer as closely as possible so the essence of the animated character is not lost in that translation to Live Action (One Piece LA did a great job of this). For example, imo, taking away Aang's goofy childlike fun personality did a huge disservice to the character. He was one-dimensional the whole show. He didn't feeeeeel like Aang to me. Yes, Aang is also wise for his age and he has serious moments, but those traits shine because they are juxtaposed with his childness.Sokka did feel like Sokka to me in the LA, so that was good. Zuko and Uncle Iroh scenes were probably the best. Also the writing and dialogue of the show took me out of many scenes and this has nothing to do with me being an ATLA fan, just objectively speaking there were some very cringeworthy dialogue moments.

Michael

Costume designs-Movie. Casting-Movie. Set designs-Movie.

Hive

i think so too, they completly butchered the characters personalitys, just so they fit this woke ass world he have right now

bb

as someone who has seen all seasons of Avatar The Last Air Bender several times, and count it as one of my favorite shows (not just for animated shows but overall) I was EXTREMELY skeptical. Yet at least just based on this first episode I must say they did a great job! Obviously there are bad acting moments as most of these actors are fairly young and many are new to big roles like this, and the chemistry seems a bit off at times. Honestly excited to see how the show progresses.

Daniel

For me there are mostly writing and directing issues. Like that they miss the core of the character (Uncle Iroh for example - at least for me) and the behavior (characterwise and in movements and bending - like how thy make it seem that Aang can fly with his airbending alone, without the need of the staff; just one example)

Daniel

For me it seems more like an directing issue from the directors side than an acting/actor issue

Troy Straughn

Ah okay. Those r all valid points. I’ve watched up to episode 3 now and I can see some of that. They are good parts and bad parts to it. It’s already way better than the movie that shall not be named, so I’m grateful for that at least haha.

Michelle Lam

this is fair. But there are people watching Naruto and HxH and OP (all which have been out longer I believe) with us for the first time...So why not this show? But either way, yah its not realistic to keep that going in our reactions.

Surya

susan i can smell your room from here, please go outside

john collins

This reaction was great! I don't understand why so many people dislike this show online. Sure, there are things here and there that don't fit well or could be better but all in all I think it's a good adaptation, although i've only seen the first 3 episodes. I also love that you guys are pausing and analyzing frequently. Also, just as a reminder, in the OG show when we get this flashback to his life at the air temple we see the monks confirm he is the avatar based on a test they give every air bender at birth. The other tribes also have similar tests which can determine who is the Avatar.

john collins

My biggest complaint of what i've seen so far has also been the glider and aang flying without the glider when we first see him. It makes me think they probably wanted to remove the glider completely but were convinced early on after filming the intro segment that it is actually really important so they brought it back.

Tomás

Aang isn't flying, I'm not sure why people keep thinking this. He's using air to propel himself from one place to another (like he does in the show), he's using air to soften his landing (like he does in the show). Remember that, once airbenders master airbending, they flow like a "leaf in the wind." When he propels himself with the air, he floats like a leaf, which isn't so unexpected. He does not willfully levitate, or change directions while staying at the same altitude, which would be flying, as Zaheer did in LOK.

Trinature

u can always just say: We will now get into spoilers and warn people if they havent seen the show...

Ognjen Gajic

I feel like people criticise it too much and that will lead to all live actions not being made. Yes it could have been better or worse but gotta start somewhere hope they make all the seasons

Christine Copeland aka Christine's Culinary Quest

So maybe you didn't notice cause it was kind of subtle but at 34:37 in this reaction you can see he had the staff with him before when he fell in the water. The implication being it was with him on the bison and that's how he had it when he got out of the ice. I guess we assume Appa brought it to him or it somehow stayed stuck to Appa. Just go with it. lol

Susanom

What's the point of your message? You feel like I need advice on that? You think it's helpful? If you are so worried about me - I haven't watched even a minute of this adaptation.

asha

so far i think the show is just okay. the fight scenes and cgi for the bending is really good i actually like sokka's character his acting fits to me but i cant stand what this show is doing with katara. maybe it gets better by the end but i feel like they took away all the characteristics that make her who she is. shes is supposed to be motherly AND a fighter. i found it weird when she wasnt fighting back against sokkas remarks more. she just always went quiet and does what he says.

GD LoreRiley

Holding back your knowledge of the anime ruins the reaction tbh. Its kinda feels like a fake reaction.

GD LoreRiley

Only 1 bender is able to fly in Avatar and he is dead long before aang and nobody has been able to do it again outside the avatar state until the korra show. What are you talking about?

Sleeping

Holding back knowledge of the anime is what makes it a good reaction imo. Comparing the two is what creates expectations and leaves people upset when they dont hear their favorite lines, etc.

Sleeping

And btw it was explained in the original show how they knew Aang was the avatar, as a child he was drawn to artifacts (toys) owned by avatars in previous lives

GD LoreRiley

Makes it a good reaction when they haven’t seen the original but holding what they clearly know is bad. Just because they arent saying it doesnt mean its not in their head. And you can tell they want to speak about it but holding themselves back. so it feels fake af

adan blas

That’s ember island sokka

Jose Huerta

First person Aang should of seen was katara(-:

Keru

No pengu sledding 😕

jeff

Sokka poking Aang in the head with a stick will he was out cold, shame they didnt put that in

BAM

The problem with watching a live adaptation of an anime/cartoon is always the comparison. For someone like me who knows Avatar but haven't watched it yet, I don't have any problems with the show. I remember reading somewhere to always watch live adaptations with a blind eye to see the beauty of it. Of course, for those who have watched and loved the original, will always choose the original.

BAM

In their case I think they're more worried about saying some spoilers because of the knowledge that they know. Thus restricting their "real" reaction and keeping it to themselves. The reaction they're showing is only on how the quality of the show is so far. I would actually prefer to see their real reaction comparing the two even though I haven't watched the original. I won't mind the spoilers, I'd prefer seeing their inner thoughts. XD

Randall Woods Jr

I think what Ron was trying to say is that they didn’t go into details and begin in the past to see the other airbenders and see what the fire lord was thinking. And we didn’t really see the fire benders attack the airbenders we just know of it based on what they tell us in the show. And in the show it says Aang picked 4 toys which were four relics from each of the four nations or something like that which gave them the answer that he was the avatar including the fact that he’s a air bending prodigy
