Just to clarify on who's Death Note went where and is with who. I think the key is to remember that it's when Misa and Light touched their own notebooks, that they got their memories back. Misa got her memories from the notebook she dug up, so that one was originally hers, and she was using it in this episode. The one that they got from Higuchi was Light's; that's also the one that the Japanese police have, which they just traded for Sayu. So Light still has "ownership" of that notebook, he just doesn't have it anymore (he technically never really had it, because they entrusted it to his dad to hide it somewhere). The notebook that Light has, ostensibly, been using for the last 5 years is Rem's; but no one else knows it exists, they all just think that there are only two notebooks. Hope that isn't more confusing... Edit: Question for everyone else. Since Light was the first one to pick the notebook up after Rem died, does that make him the new owner? Which would mean that he "owns" two notebooks? Another interesting thing I just realized; in episode 24, they showed Light explaining how he can transfer ownership of the Death Note between Rem and Ryuk. Which I think is why Rem was with Higuchi (who has Light's notebook) and Ryuk is now actually attached to Misa; because he only showed up when she got her notebook back. So that means that Light doesn't have a Shinigami attached to him anymore. Does that sound right?

The notebook situation is very confusing. There are four notebooks, corresponding to Ryuk, Rem, Gelus, and this new Shinigami. Ryuk's notebook is just Ryuk's. The one Mello has now is the one Ryuk dropped and was passed from Light to Higuchi before being under police custody. Light has Rem's and Misa has Gelus'. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry, not trying to dominate the comments section here. Personal opinion on the episode. I'm pretty positive the US and most European countries (don't know about Japan) have a "non-negotiation with terrorists" rule; for fairly obvious reasons. I don't think Light or his team did a very good job of approaching this situation objectively (which was a little surprising to me). Of course, we don't want Sayu to die, but you can't just hand over the most effective tool of murder to a presumed terrorist. Not my favorite episode for that reason, but things are getting interesting. I like the "battle-on-two-fronts" vibe. Thanks for your guys' awesome reactions!

I think you're right. The only shinigami that could be attached to Light right now through either notebook he owns is Rem. And Ryuk is "attached" to Misa's notebook.

Yes, the thing with the notebooks can be a bit confusing at first, so here is a short list to briefly explain to you how many Death Notes are currently on Earth and where they come from: So, there are 3 Death Notes in the human world right now. 1) The Death Note that Ryuk dropped on Earth at the very beginning of the show. And this Death Note is the one he stole from the Shinigami shown at the end of this episode and called it his own 2) The Death Note that Misa got from Rem, which once belonged to the Shinigami Gelus 3) Rem's own Death Note, which Light got in his hands after Rem died

in my opinion light fuck up so hard in this situation ,i mean mello has to know now that light or his father is kira (thinking if i was mello) since only that small group knew about the director being kidnapped for the book and he got killed so mello was already sus and now sayu who is term of average value is lesser then the director ( director of police vs normal citizen) and yet she lived. So now mello has the book and prob knows kiras identity...

2023-10-20 01:07:57 Light movin pretty hasty he gotta focus up 🤦‍♂️ thing is is that once the guy took Mr Yagami 'hostage,' especially when they were at the hideout, there'd been no reason to kill Sayu. Even if Light kills Sayu while they're on the plane, they still have the dad hostage and if Light killed Sayu while they were at the hideout, Mello doesn't even lose his bargaining chip cuz there's ppl with guns that can extort or kill the dad for the notebook. His best route, for killing her, would've been not going with the exchange at all, but they probably would've kidnapped more and more people for exchange, though that does let off some suspicion on Light since Kira woulda killed his own sister. I hope Light & Near cook up something for Mello, and it'd be cool to see them become friends if possible cuz I wanna see more of N's personality. from the beginning u could always tell L had personality & a sense of humor that we weren't seeing (til the show developed) but atm I don't feel the same for N. hopefully that changes! I mean the guy had no reaction to his team dying 😭 absolutely stone cold, even L had a reaction to Ukita dying and seemed to care about the lives of his team, at least imo. and it def makes sense for Mello to keep Near alive, cuz I feel like that's his real name and he just wants to prove that he's smarter/better than him

I think that what you're saying is definitely a possibility. However, I don't think it proves it. For example, it could just as easily be true (from Mello's perspective) that Kira rather has a mole in the Japanese task force, and is trying to get the Death Note out of the police's custody, so that he can get it back himself. After all, why would Kira allow the notebook to be given away so nonchalantly. I would definitely consider the possibility that someone like Kira would be willing to let his own sister/daughter die. What makes this episode so frustrating is that I feel that Light acts so out of character. He should never have killed the director nor allowed the notebook to go anywhere; but they didn't even deliberate over it

i got no idea this my first time watching too 😂 but seeing they introduced him, i believe the new will be attached to either mello or light's notebook. it's technically the new guy's since ryuk stole it from him or something, and i'm not exactly sure if Mr Yagami gave Mello the notebook Ryuk took or Misa's notebook (i forget which one is buried at this point but i'm assuming the very first deathnote is buried and the one that was traded to Mello and that's been used as of recent is Misa's since Light picked it up after Rem died) now this is ASSUMING light still has the 2nd notebook. I don't see any reason as to why he wouldn't still have at least his or misa's tldr: I think he'll be Mello's shinigami. no need to worry yet, since it can be good or bad: shinigami are wild cards bc they have their own desires, as Ryuk is mostly neutral with Light but Rem always favored Misa and did anything to help
