Just as a clarification, the animation style changing isn't because of Covid and budget cuts. The art direction changed in general to more match the designs in the manga but on top of that some parts of the season have some noticeable dips in quality due to Covid.

Kunimi's deal was explained in the first season match against Aoba Johsai. Oikawa explains that his m.o. is energy conservation. He prefers to stay cool and relaxed for the majority of the match, not going all out to get balls when his team has a strong lead, but then once everyone on his team is exhausted and spent during the 3rd set, Oikawa has Kunimi turn up to 11. Hinata now has developed enough game IQ to made that observation himself.

I really do think they decided to switch up the art style because its more simple and at times, less detailed than the previous seasons. Less time consuming to draw, probably. I wouldn't be shocked to hear Covid had something to do with that decision. I kinda hate that they did that tho because it was quite jarring and at times distracting too. Of course, the story itself made up for it, for me in the end~

It definitely is less detailed and easier to draw but it definitely wasn't at all because of Covid. Season 4 started airing in January of 2020 which was before Covid not to mention that means production and that decision probably happened either in 2018 or 2019.

Alright, so this might be a bit of a long comment but please bear with me. Regarding the art style change, it was changed to reflect the mangakas (Haruichi Furudate) art style in the manga, now everyone has their own opinion on the art style change and for me personally as someone who read the manga I didn't really have any issues with it but I know for some non manga readers it was a bit jarring for them at first but overall most people seemed to get used to it after a while it just took some time which is completely understandable. Now as for the animation, overall I personally think the animation for the first part of season 4 was pretty good, however in part 2 of season 4 (since it was being animated during the Covid pandemic and there was most likely limited staff available to work on the show at that time) there were a couple of episodes that were out sourced to a different studio to animate, because of this the animation quality on those episodes was in my opinion and a lot of other peoples opinion VERY bad. However, I do believe that the episodes that were out sourced originally were then redone or at least partially reanimated and cleaned up by Production IG (the original animation studio) later on for the blu ray release of season 4.

I think it was still the same studio as previous seasons, but different staff. They wanted the animation to look more like the manga drawings that's why the quality changed. Also had something to do with their budget? But I honestly like this season's animation better.

I prefer these new/ manga accurate designs more. they look bulkier and more athletic.

The animation gets really good when it “needs” too. But yeah it is very weird and off putting a lot.
