tl;dr the new OGL (as reported thus far) should not directly effect PrintableHeroes.

Hey Everyone!

I've been getting a lot of questions about how and if the new OGL might effect PrintableHeroes and while Wizards of the Coast hasn't released their new OGL yet there has been a fair amount of reporting on it which I have been doing my best to follow along with.

Having read through most of the reporting out there even if this extreme version of the OGL went live it doesn't look like PrintableHeroes would be effected.

The bulk of the work I do is generic miniatures that are unaffiliated with any specific system or IP so they wont be effected. For the specific miniatures I do using WotC IP (monsters like the Beholder or Displacer Beast) or named characters (like Xanathar, Barnibus Blastwind, Hethyl Arkorran, etc) I make a point of adhering to WotC's Fan Art Policy which from all reporting thus far will be unchanged.

So as things currently stand, based on what information is available at the moment I do not think Printable Heroes will be directly effected.

If the new OGL remains unchanged from what has been leaked/reported then there maybe broader changes to the general TTRPG landscape and it's pretty hard to predict how that may play out in the long run. Regardless though my goal will remain the same; making miniatures to help make playing TTRPGs more accessible/easier for folks.

I'll likely follow up with another post about the OGL once the new one is officially released and I've had time to review it.

Thanks everyone for your time, cheers!

Thank you for the update. I believe even if there were some massive changes, and you had to change your content to stay viable, you will still have massive support for the work that you do.

If it comes to pass, I think they may still require you to sign the OGL 1.1, which sucks. However, since you're posting your minis mainly on Patreon, you would be considered a "non-commercial creator", because you're collecting "tips", not a price for your minis.

PrintableHeroes

What part of it do you think will require me to sign the OGL 1.1? From what I saw of the reporting the OGL refers to their Fan Art policy for people just making art available for free. I’m not leveraging any of their actual mechanics or system beyond just the IP of their creatures/npcs which is fully covered by the fan art policy to my understanding? (shrug)

I use your minis to play a game called "Age of Fantasy" by One Page Rules. Would you ever be interested in doing some minis for their system "Grimdark Future"? It's a game that can be played with their paper minis, warhammer 40k minis, their own stl files of minis that you 3d print, or even fully 3d printed minis you can buy off of them. I've been having a really fun time with it, your forest props work great for Age of Fantasy! I've been using your "Dungeon walls" and graveyard props for Grimdark Future! : )

My bad, I thought that: either you sign the OGL, and have the existing content remain as fan-work (which can not be monetized - you can not even put it in any paid Patreon Tier list anymore, because then it's viewed as an "exclusive", aka, your patrons are "paying you"), or NOT sign the OGL... and then WotC can demand you remove whatever IP of theirs you're still using from your site (which is bogus, but they can still try). To avoid misunderstanding - this OGL 1.1 f*cking blows and I hope WotC will backtrack on it.

PrintableHeroes

My understanding is since all of the WotC IP minis I do are accessible entirely for free and never in any pay-for-tier then they’re all covered by the existing Fan Art policy. The Fan Art policy even specifically says it’s okay to fund raise for the fan art on platforms like Patreon as long as the resulting Fan Art is made available entirely for free. Will of course depend on the final OGL language, it’s possible they’ll try to require agreeing to it before even allowing the Fan Art policy come into play, which seems excessive and might change things. I guess we’ll find out though!

2023-03-10 19:18:49 Have you considered the weird line about "Static electronic files" or however it puts it? That could clash with the pdfs that could be argued to be non-static since they include interactive elements to select which colours you want

Seconded. I also came across your setup looking for fantasy and sci fi wargaming miniatures, specifically the OPR range. Please take a look at their stuff, I would love to see something in your style fitting this particular bill:)

Seems very specific and probably not something they care about? (shrug), each image is it's own static image (not a video or frames of an animation meant to be viewed in sequence for example) and the interactive element isn't any different then say clicking buttons on a website and switching to a different page or image.
