Mearsheimer is a midwit who doesn't understand deep politics or US imperial geopolitics, which is why he mistakenly believes that US Israel and Ukraine policy "aren't in US [imperial] interests". US Israel policy is based on a strategy of tension where the US plays both sides: it supports Israel, but it also supports far-right Islamist forces across the Muslim world (including basically creating Al Qaeda). Both sides have to (1) exist and (2) fight each other for the policy to work. Any outcome that ends the conflict - whether Israel makes peace with its neighbours or whether the Israeli state ceases to exist - is an existential threat to US imperial interests.
