You asked why are were in Italy at the start. A ton of real life UK related conspiracies tie to that time and place, they called it the Years of Lead. Things like Operation Gladio, "God's Banker" and the Blackfriars bridge, etc. Using real conspiracies and actual news footage got them in some trouble. About 42 mins in they meet up with a real UK politician, Airey Neave (the smug dummy eating), who was assassinated IRL. They showed us the news footage of his real blown up car at the end. His family asked for the show to be withdrawn when it first aired. I'd totally forgotten the guy who plays young Philip Carvel was the same guy who played the lead in the film "The Show" I mentioned in my first posts here. I blame the beard.

This episode is my favorite in the series. Being able to finally understand important parts of the story like how Janus came about, the Network's origins, and the backstory for Arby and Jessica is huge. I also really like how this episode stands out with the different screen ratio, the red on black opening title, the vintage coloring, and all of the IRL news footage. Seeing how they wove the story into real life events makes it all the more creepy. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure the mansion where Milner and Carvel met is supposed to be a Bilderberg Group meeting which only enhances the conspiracy theories even more!

Oh wow. I never knew that the creators got in trouble for that. I hope that isn't why it got cancelled.

Possibly? I don't think Channel 4 were as worried about their government funding getting cut off back then... but it would explain some things. I only remember it as a small flare up in the press and some social media noise.

Oof It makes it all the more eerie that they used real-life events but I think using the real footage might've been too far. Still adds a great amount to the conspiracy feelings though

yes I enjoyed their backstories a lot! I also noticed the filming style but didn't know how to describe it lol I liked that too. This show knows how to play with conspiracies for sure
