About the difference in tone that you discussed: One person verbalized the difference between the shows based on the motivations of the protagonists: At the beginning of Breaking Bad, we can see that Walter White wants to be recognized and respected. Later on, we learned that Walter also wanted to be feared and obeyed. At the beginning of Better Call Saul, you have seen that Jimmy McGill wants to be a successful lawyer and wants what's best for his brother. Those are much more understandable motivations, which makes the show lighter and more positive. But, like Walter White, we'll find out much more about Jimmy's motivations as the show progresses.
