So, next question. Insofar as the next project is concerned, how much desire is there for another DayZ video-essay piece?

Here's my thinking:

  • a.) with two bullshitteries done previously, it's nice to mix things up. Helps rest the brain from all the keyframing.
  • b.) I'm fairly close to the conclusion of the project as a whole. It needs to move along now, it's been too damn long.
  • c.) Having been playing DayZ with the guys it's naturally at the forefront of my thinking at the moment.

Putting up a poll here to gauge general thoughts. But if you have any comments or feedback feel free to put them below, I'll be sure to read them all.

Some context for the uninitiated. Alongside the bullshitteries, I've been trying my hand at a number of video-essays on the topic of the DayZ Standalone. Analysing what makes the genre work and how the standalone development has had a number of hiccups in specific areas. Mostly due to my own like of video-essays and dissatisfaction at how shallow much of the analysis of DayZ is on Youtube. Mostly focusing on bugs, or stability problems in the standalone, rather than what made the DayZ mod such a huge sensation in 2012/2013.

There are some drafts here for the curious. Though parts 1-5 are down for the moment due to needing quite a bit of rework. The scripts were a bit undercooked and need some trimming.

Specifically this next part would be Part 11 - Wasted development.

In which as a follow up to the notes made in part 10, I talk about some of the strange development choices and misplaced man hours that I reckon didn't help the development of the standalone. And may even be immediately circumvented/disabled the moment modding becomes available, likely making them huge wastes of time.

And the good new is the script is more or less ready to go straight to recording. It was (along with a major chunk of part 12) written in one big chunk in November. So it all depends on if you're happy for me to proceed.

What are your thoughts?

Yep. Happy for you to get it done and realise as one part a week. That gives you 3 months of weekly content and chance to do 2 or 3 bullshiteries during that time as well

As much as I love bullshittery's I really love your essays as well especially since the last one helped me out during my studies: (story time) I had some trouble with the use of use cases and their relation with the database/their use in general, since my teachers where to set in their ways they never explained it in a way that I could understand it, after watching your video I finnaly understood why and how they where used (did feel kind of stupid afterwards that I didn't understand such a simple thing).

I love the usual bullshitteries and I loved the Vietnam one, but I can't wait for the day z to progress. Love hearing you talk about it on the current day z streams, so I say bring on the day z project 😁

How far away are they from being fully released

The DayZ Essay is something I vote for that you continue on. If I remember correctly, haven't you been worried about it taking too long so that some of the things might've been fixed/long gone with the DayZ Standalone "2.0" (that you guys are testing out now) getting closer to being, kinda, completed. I'm also learning a lot from listening to them, so for me the 'reward' is twice as big with them.

I think you should do what you want, as a content creator on Youtube myself (who might have copied your style of text following people who talk) I know how sickening it can be to constantly work with keyframing and subtitling everything. Also, I'm sure if you take time to do something you want rather that repeat the same video format for the 2nd or 3rd month that it will be much better because the viewers can feel whether you forced yourself to make the video or enjoyed making it, plus it's refreshing to do more than one type of content once in a while. Cheers from Bosnia and The Balkans!

Glad to hear it. Also no need, as the whole thing can be difficult to get the head around. If anything part 13 should be really helpful, because I'm going to talk about the SCRUM thing more and why it isn't always helpful.

So there's two more chapters with talking points. Then a closing smaller bit where I just recount the current state of DayZ at whichever point that is. Then I'll be going back and tightening what's already been made, before probably releasing each part publically one after the other. So 3-4 big efforts left?

Go for it! I'd like to see the finished product, and I'm sure there are many out there that would also like to see it.

I really liked the chapters that I've seen, and I think you should continue with the next one if you feel like it. But I would also like to see the whole series released on Youtube from the beginning - I've seen many people asking about it.

for gods sake, get it done already :)

Do the essay. I'm not personally super interested in Day-Z but the style of the chapters I've watched was compelling (the last one was actually super useful as my department has been moving to Agile over the last year) and it's something you're excited about. Definitely good to take the time to reset and get it out of your brain!

This! We're all sick of you talking about this essay you've been working on for years, but then you can't say much about it, even though you couldn't help yourself when you first started playing DayZ again. lol

Do the essay. Now is the best time for it since DayZ came out and it is gaining traction again. And also you want it done and we want to see it :)

I've watched parts 5-10 so far, and god I can't say how much I enjoyed it and hope to see the final cut soon!
