Good afternoon all. I've been able to finish another work-in-progress chunk of this Sons of Forest video-essay. An unlisted video link is here for those interested - https://youtu.be/p7ROvAjV7-w

This one consists of segments 16 to 22 (out of 40). So over the halfway mark now.

It contains the following categories from the script.

  • Introduction to the cannibal types - and the plot implication that some of them are clothed.

  • Finding the "Entertainment Bunker".

  • A second cannibal camp and the now "humanised" cannibals

  • The discovery of the "true mutants".

  • Brief introduction of the campers, gliders and unicycles.

  • The presence of the 70's Christian yachts and their motivations. Plus the first name drop of Solafite.

  • The aforementioned "problem of scale" and how SotF seems to take steps to correct it.

As before, this segment consists of lots of introduction to the various factions, ideas and story elements that will ultimately come up again in the analysis sections. In which I'll later discuss how well the Sons of the Forest story sticks together.

This WIP also refers back to the "problem of scale" thing and how Sons of the Forest feels like it's intentional steps to correct it. With in-universe explanations for how some of the things on the island could be taking place.

Also as mentioned previously, the benefit to this sort of walkthrough format is that it also lets me thread amusing moments into the mix. Often as transitions between different scenes, or involving certain objects being presented.

If a hard cut joke involves me unicycling off a cliff, it's not going to work if I don't first setup the presence of an electric unicycle. Hence a segment in which I mention the campers, gliders and what they've bought with them.

Another notable thing to talk about is the inclusion of musical chapter breaks.

Much later on in the script, I've highlighted two combat-focused scenes where I'd like to use some of the soundtrack to make a rapid-fire montage of clips:

But I figured I could (if it works well enough) include 3-4 other musical interludes between various chapters. Perhaps showing moments where I run over thing with the golf buggy, crash the glider, or otherwise take part in overworld shenanigans.

I must stress though, the included musical transitions are extremely temporary. Honestly it feels pretty rubbish as a creator to post something so obviously temp. But it is what it is. Please don't look at anything here as the final product. Much will change!

Do however let me know what you think. And thank you for your patience.

For now though, rather than deliver the next piece in 2 weeks, I rather fancy a switch to an alternate project. Therefore I was thinking of making some polls for a bullshittery? An editing change of pace would be welcome. And it would show everybody that I'm still alive. Then I can get back to this and continue.

Bear with me there, I'll come up with a follow up post on the next plan. And ask for your collective opinion on it.

Thank you all.

Being pedantic, but it sounded like you mentioned "... giving away" as opposed to "giving way" at some point in there. And I think you meant the latter.

A minor thought, but I think that perhaps it would be best not to show the sequence of arriving at the yachts prior to you introducing them as a plot point in the travel montage That said, I do actually like the idea of having travel montages for the scene transitions as it shows off the map and elements of the game play
