I really like John Walker because even with his fits of rage and clearly being an unstable person, you also feel for him from time to time. I believe for his charcter, he's a guy trying to do the right thing overall, but being Captain America was never in the cards for him

I know lots of people are tired of Hollywood inserting gender/race/political views into their entertainment, but this is a perfect example where it works beautifully and makes sense for the story, not forced just to push an agenda. Isaiah’s story is heartbreaking, and very realistic of how a black super soldier would be treated in those days. And Sam’s hesitance to take up the mantle of Captain America as a black man just feels very real, even in present-day America. I just personally love the added racial aspect to this story, I think it makes it even more powerful when Sam finally takes up the shield and title as Captain America.

I think John Walker is the perfect example of what Erskine meant when he told Steve not to be the perfect soldier, but a good man. Walker is not and was never a "bad person". He was a perfect soldier. He served his country by following orders and he did it well. He's just a man who tried to do the right thing and sadly he made major mistakes along the way "This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man who has known power all his life may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength and knows compassion" -Erskine
