The next 4 movies are a continuing story that ends at #6. I think it's a good series of movies.

Yeah the whole khan being the villain was just a process of elimination. The writer and director Nicholas Meyer looked at all the villains in the series and picked khan as he was one of the only ones who actually was still alive and felt his story could be fleshed out more. He ended up becoming the most popular villain in the franchise after this.
