Chapter 17 Goldenrod Arc: Dairy Tale

It could not be said enough Ash was having an amazing time in Goldenrod City, he got a badge, a ribbon, a fancy dexphone, got to reunite with Primeape, catch some new Pokemon in a Bug Catching event, make new friends and reconnect with some old ones as well. He was even allowed to carry 12 Pokemon with him, so he got to be with more of his monster friends.

There was still more to do in the city, but something Ash wanted to do was tackle some special training. “Maybe we can ask Whitney if there is a place we can go?” Brock suggested.

“That’s a great idea!” Ash hugged him. He made Brock blush and his heart flutter.

Misty returned, happy to know the new bug monsters were back at Oak’s lab. “Are we heading to the next town or what?”

Shingo had given them a tip on where to go next. Ecruteak City had Ash’s next badge and according to the guidebook Ecruteak also had a contest hall.

“I don’t see a problem staying here a few more days!” Ash said.

“What if we miss the contest huh?!” She snapped back.

“The contest in Ecruteak is still two weeks away, and besides Misty are you even prepared for this contest.” She deflated. “Ash wanted to do some training today, maybe you should work on your coordinator moves as well.”

“Fine...whatever…” She crossed her arms. ‘Why is Brock taking his side?’ It wasn’t about taking sides, it would be good for both of them. Ash needed to train for both his Gym Badge and a Contest.

The guidebook said Morty used Ghost types. “Ghost types can’t be hit by normal type moves unless special conditions are met, Noctowl has the ability to make those conditions. In kind normal types aren’t effected by ghost moves.” Ash called out his monsters and had a pow wow.

“Ghosts can be tricky, Noctowl will come in handy dealing with their weird movements.” He also had Scar as a Dark type which was super effective against ghost, Girafarig* was both a Psychic and Normal type so he’d be a secret weapon. “Noctowl, Scar, and Girafarig, you’ll be our main force for the gym match, Drowzee and Cyndaquil you’ll be on standby!” The monsters cheered.

They didn’t know the rules, so Ash wanted to be prepared, because of his badges he faced Whitney in a five v five, so he wanted to keep all his mons in tip top shape of course, but having five prepared for the gym battle would be key. Ursaring hung his head. “Don’t feel down Ursaring, you did great in the match against Whitney, you can help with training, and if you like you can enter the contest!”

“Haha, you are gonna enter that beast in a contest?!” Misty laughed.

Ursaring snarled at her, making her flinch and jump. He was in, he’d train for the contest. Ursaring had a dark type move, however Ghost types were tricky, one Disable his only effective move would be sealed. Ash was using his head. “How’d you like to do the performance round Chikorita?”

“Chiko!” The grass type tackled him and nuzzled him happily.

The plan was set, they just needed to find a spot for training. They went to the gym and spoke to Whitney. As it happened, after her recent loss she wanted to do some training herself. Casey got herself a badge. “That girl was something else, using her status effect strategy and her Bayleef managed to outlast my Miltank!”

“She’s one of my rivals for the Johto League, this is getting me more pumped.”

“We were hoping to do some training, if you wouldn’t mind showing us a good place?” Brock asked.

“Sure thing, you guys can come to my Uncle’s ranch.” Her uncle ran a dairy farm just outside Goldenrod City. The place was pretty sophisticated. “Here at the ranch we breed and raise Miltank, the stronger the Miltank the higher quality the milk.” The milk was then used to make all sorts of dairy products which got shipped out all over Johto. “Once the Magnet Train’s up and running we’ll deliver to Kanto as well.”

They used fancy milking machines to collect the milk from the monsters. Milton’s Miltank were larger than Whitneys, they were well raised but not as battle hardened as Whitney’s Miltank. “Are those Miltank yours?” Brock pointed to a small group of them.

“Those are actually wild Miltank, uncle lets them roam the fields. They usually don’t cause trouble…” Whitney made a face. “Well, it’ll be fine, let’s do some training!”

“Alright come out everybody!” Ash called out all 12 of his monsters, Pikachu hopping off his shoulder to join the ranks.

“Pika!” “Chiko!” “Cynda!” “Houn!” “Toto!” “Ape ape!” “Ring!” “Zzz!” “Hera!” “Gira!” “Drow!” “Ros!”

“MIL!” Everyone froze.

“Ehh?” Ash’s Tauros tensed. A bunch of Milton’s Miltank got hearts in their eyes as they gazed at Ash’s stud of a Tauros. The bull monster sweat dropped and became very nervous.

Without much warning the Miltank charged at Tauros. “Tau!” The bull ran for it and got chased around by the horny monsters.

“Ahh Tauros return!” He called the normal type back, and he was safe in the ball. The Miltank snapped out of their horny daze and calmed down. “Sorry buddy this probably isn’t the safest place for you to train.”

Brock noticed the wild Miltank didn’t respond the same. “That’s because they are young and wild, uncle’s are more willing to breed, but I’ve never seen them respond to a Tauros like that, you have an awesome Pokemon there Ash!” Whitney praised.

Whitney brought them to the pasture where the wild Miltank roamed. “This is where I do my training!” She demonstrated by showing how her Miltank used Rollout against the various hills.

The move was quite impressive, but the way she trained it up. ‘The spin builds up more and more power.’ Ash analyzed the move and began to formulate ways it can work in both contests and gym battles. ‘Not only does it build up power but speed!’ Seeing the way Miltank moved it was so fast and able to even withstand other attacks. ‘Offense and defense in this spin!’

Ash had Cyndaquil work on their Flame Wheel, matching the same training as Miltank to build up speed and power. He ran his thoughts to Noctowl who did some calculations. They tested it out with Cyndaquil’s Flame Wheel, everyone watched as Cyndaquil charged at Noctowl, the flying type doing a spin to dodge the attack.

“Whoa!” Noctowl was able to dodge the attack and use the opponent’s move to boost his power for the next attack. Noctowl gave them pointers, this spin move could work for some then others.

Heracross and Primeape did some sparring work on the spin move. They used the spin to build up power to launch an attack. Heracross used a Horizontal Spin while Primeape used a Vertical Spin. Not only did it work as a dodge or a power boost it made them look cool doing it.

Pikachu, Chikorita, Noctowl, Heracross, and Drowzee managed to get down the Horizontal Spin, while Scar and Primeape got down the Vertical Spin, Totodile, Girafarig, and Cyndaquil were able to do both. Ursaring wasn’t able to do either.

“It’s okay Ursaring, there’s different kinds of battles and styles.” Ash had an idea for combinations with him.

He had Ursaring serve as a battle companion attacking with Slash and Feint Attack so the others can do their dodge. He also served as a tank for their attacks, using Rest to recover. Ash saw him as a tank like Snorlax. “See you can fight in your own way and you are awesome!”

Brock was impressed, Ash was having everyone work together, using the gym and contest prep to help everyone get stronger. Pikachu, Primeape, Totodile, and Heracross were getting stronger serving as training partners. There was a synergy on Ash’s team.

Misty was struggling so Whitney focused on helping her. While the gym leader was away, then came trouble.

Milton gave them some milk and yogurt to eat and drink for a refreshing snack.

Cyndaquil, Chikorita, and Totodile were taking a break, enjoying some lunch and moomoo milk, when suddenly a Miltank approached them. “Mil!” It snatched their food and gobbled it down.

This Miltank wasn’t as strong or as experienced as Whitney’s, he got blasted away. She didn’t get a chance to recover as Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikorita pelted her with their attacks. “Mil Mil!” She ran off.

“What’s up with that?”

According to Milton this Miltank was young, wild, and aggressive. She comes into the farm and takes food, and it doesn’t like Whitney’s Miltank after losing to it. With Whitney training with Misty, the Wild One was attacking Ash and Brock.

“Cynda!” Cyndaquil used Flame Wheel and thanks to all of his training the powerful roll overwhelmed Miltank and knocked her flat. She tried to tackle Scar, but he dodged with a Vertical Spin, building up power for a Fire Fang.

Miltank got pissed, stomping around in frustration. “Miltank that’s enough!” Brock called out.

He gave Magby some food, which made the little guy happy. “Here!” Brock dished out a large plate of food.

The smell was mouth watering. “Eat up this is all for you.” Her eyes sparkled and she rushed over and began to stuff her face. It was amazing!

She never had food this tasty before.

Brock saw something special in this Miltank, she was young and full of potential. She needed a good breeder to help her grow. He spoke with Milton about it and he was fine with that, Whitney had tried to catch that one herself, but since that Miltank avoided capture, breaking out of every monster ball they tried on her, she was still wild. Plus she was a problem child so if she got out of his hair all the better.

“Miltank why don’t you come with us?” He asked. “I can see your potential let me help you reach it!”

Miltank was shocked, but she’d agree if Brock beat her in battle. Pineco was called out and the two clashed, Pineco limited Miltank’s movements with Spikes, so when she tried to use Tackle or Rollout she suffered damage.

The bug type blocked a Stomp with Protect, before hitting Miltank with a Rapid Spin. “Monster Ball go!” It hit Miltank.

Jiggle...Jigghle...Pop! Miltank bust out of the ball and smashed it. She wasn’t going down easy. She did a Rollout despite the damage and hit Pineco with a super effective attack.
