Chapter 5 Training and Monsters

Nurse Joy gave Ash a tip, he could head to Route 22 to do some training. The Pewter Gym was a Rock and Ground Type Gym, so they needed to either train up or catch a monster with a type advantage.

Ash battled a few Rattata, but before he could catch one they ran away. He rotated his mons letting them get experience and get stronger, they each got to wear the Macho Brace to amplify their training and growth. This route was good for trainers, new trainers could be seen training and battling their monsters. Ketchum had a few matches with these trainers.

Some had Oddish, which his Pidgey and Charmander had no problem defeating. Some had Poliwag, which Mini Dit and Pidgey had to take care of. A few others had Vulpix or Growlithe, Charmander showed off the fire monster rivalry, and he fought hard. New trainers in Pallet got Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, but trainers in other areas got to choose different mons some towns stuck with the Grass, Fire, and Water gimmick.

He bumped into a boy named Shin Trace. He was also a trainer from Pallet Town, rocking brown hair, a black t-shirt, and green pants. Trace had gotten Bulbasaur from Professor Oak. “You are from Pallet Town too aren’t you?”

“Transform!” His Ditto transformed into Nidoran Female. The two clashed, Shin seemed focus on attacking, calling for Scratch and Poison Sting. Ash checked Nidoran’s moves with his Pokedex. “Alright we can work with this!”

Shin was shocked when Ditto used Nidoran’s moves, but kept on the attack. Even as Mini Dit weakened them with Growl and Tail Whip.

“I may have lost but I learned a lot, next time I’ll use moves to weaken my opponent!” He stated proudly, Shin was full of positivity. Ash knew that trick already from watching Pokemon League matches. A lot of trainers focused on offensive moves.

Despite it being 2 wins, they had the third match for training purposes. Shin had his Bulbasaur use Growl to weaken Charmander’s ATK power, but it was still Ash’s win thanks to the type advantage. Ash didn’t realize, he had seen Nidorino and Nidoking used in League matches before, but didn’t realize the lines were so divided. “Welcome to the team Nidoran!” Ash went to pet Nidoran, and accidentally became poisoned by Nidoran’s ability. “Blegh…” His face turned purple.

Weedle and Kakuna were more aggressive than Caterpie, and attacked the group on sight. Nidoran battled hard, and was able to resist the poison attacks. The two were bonding and getting in sync.

He caught up with Ash’s team in strength. They kept wondering around, battling wild monsters that attacked them. Some Pidgey attacked them, going after Caterpie.

Pidgey, Nidoran, and Charmander defended their newest member. Things got a little scary when a Pidgeotto attacked, but Mini Dit was able to fend him off. The forest was vast, and it was easy to get lost in it.

Ketchum wasn’t worried, he set up camp and the gang settled down for the night. Mini Dit and Caterpie stayed up and kept watch, the two had a nice little conversation. Caterpie had dreams of evolving and getting stronger. Mini Dit believed Ash would help him with that.

Nidoran overheard and believed it, Ash had helped him grow strong, even learning Double Kick. He was growing attached to his trainer, and Caterpie would too. Ash shared his dreams and ambitions, becoming a Pokemon Master was a wild goal. He may have been a beginner, but he took what he learned and applied it.

With their bond growing, soon Ash would have nothing to fear from Nidoran’s ability, and their bond could grow even stronger.
