Chapter 2 Skills and Dragons

Satoru had no idea why the cave he was in seemed so empty and yet rich in magicules. There was rare and potent herbs all over the places. He used Predator to gobble them up and store them in his stomach. They didn’t taste great, but there wasn’t much food around or prey to eat, he saw it like eating a salad.

Great Sage was able to analyze and process the herbs and make a high quality potion and store it in his second stomach.  Great Sage analyzed these potions and was able to appraise them.

Acquired: Appraisal Skill unlocked.

Great Sage could now use the Voice of the World to appraise objects and help Satoru learn about things. Satoru decided to try an experiment, he had nothing else to do. He tried mixing some of his poison with one of the potions and created a High Antidote.

Acquired: Antidote Synthesis Skill obtained.

‘Nice!’ Satoru thought, and made a hefty stock of High Potions and High Antidotes. With Appraisal he learned that his High Potions had a 99% effective rate, and the same was true for his High Antidote. He wasn’t aware of the imprtance of this yet, but it’d be quite handy in the future.

He continued to skitter around until he found some mysterious rocks. He touched it and had Great Sage Appraise it.

“I wonder if I can eat this stuff and store it in my stomach.” He takes a bite and shudders. “SO HARD!” His fangs ached.

Answer: There are some creatures capable of eating stones and magic ore. If you use predator on them you’ll be able to gain their skills.

‘Awesome!’ Satoru wondered around but couldn’t find any prey. He did find some water which he drank. ‘Hmm…’ He used Predator on the water storing the small lake in his second stomach. ‘Check this out Great Sage!’ He fired the water out and destroyed a rock.

Even the water was rich in magicules in this area, staying clean 24/7. Satoru replenished the water in the lake and skated across the surface of the water. Satoru had drank pure mystic water, delicious, nutritious, and skill awakening.

Great Sage explained how skills could be unlocked through feasting, practice, studying, and if you develop your skill tree, the skills can resonate and become a new skill, or unlock other options. It was true for humans, a blacksmith can unlock new skills just doing their job every day.It sounded so cool. He’s read manga and light novels where villains rely on one technique or skill and get schooled fast.‘I won’t be like those chumps, I’m gonna unlock lots of skills.’

He did what a spider does and spun a beautiful web, he made a little base he could track back to. Spinning his webs like this helped him unlock a new monster skill.

Satoru was positively giddy. Learning new skills felt like such a great accomplishment. He did find it odd, while he didn’t know how big this cave was, he wondered why he hadn’t spotted a single living thing? ‘Am I all alone in here?’ he thought.

He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to be doing. Was he supposed to become some kind of Boss Monster? What was a spider to do in this world.

As he traveled deeper into the cave, he met something intimidating...at first.

He had gotten a bit excited and fell down a passageway and bumped into something. ‘A dragon!?’ Satoru gasped, and quickly skittered away. He tried to use Stealth, but the dragon saw through it.

“Hello there small one!” He bellowed. There was no point in hiding. “I’m impressed, most spiders wouldn’t dare come near me, are you perhaps unique?” He claimed Spiders were instinctual creatures attacking their prey or going after anything in their web. He was impressed with Satoru’s intelligence and personality.

“A unique...I don’t really know. I’m not from around here.” He bowed his head. “Sorry to intrude.” He was about to withdraw. He was just a little monster spider, what happens if the dragon decided to squish him. He’d seen enough Godzilla movies to know the Spider Kaiju never wins, and he was not Kaiju sized.

The dragon gestured him forward. He skittered forward. He couldn’t help but feel nervous. “Are you scared of me Small One?”

“Ehehehe maybe a little…” The dragon chuckled.

“I am pretty intimidating!” He flexed making his muscles pop. “I am the Great Storm Dragon Veldora!” he declared boldly. “One of the true great dragons!”

“Well I’ve never seen a dragon outside of manga, anime, and video games.”

“You must be a Unique. What is Anime? What is this Manga? What are Video Games?” Satoru explained how he came to be in this world. How in his world there are artists, authors, and creators who spin stories and create entertainment for people. It sounded fantastical.

He shared how he came to this world, having been reincarnated. Veldora was impressed, he was impressed that the voice of the world answered him, and he shared about Summons and Other Worlders; humans brought from other worlds gaining unique skills and abilities. It sounded cool for Satoru, and he wanted to go find some humans...but...given his current form they’d probably kill him as soon as look at him.

Veldora didn’t want him to leave, despite being a big tough dragon he was very lonely. He’s been trapped in a barrier for over a hundred years. “A barrier?” He couldn’t see the barrier at all.

“Do you know the skill Magic Sense?” He did not, but Veldora helped him learn. Satoru activated the skill, and he could see the magicules in the air, things were so pretty! With Magic Sense, his current senses were heightened and he could see the barrier.

“Ah this thing?” He poked it and used Appraise.

Note: Barrier is known as Infinite Prison, other information not available.

The barrier, was siphoning off Veldora’s magicules, which explained why this cave was so rich. Veldora had caused some trouble and earned the attention of a Hero. He had played around too much and even when he got serious he still lost. “You were quite the naughty boy weren’t you?” Veldora blushed and shivered.

He stuttered a bit. “Maybe...a...little…” he twiddled his claws. Veldora was quite the character, he didn’t seem like a bad guy maybe a little arrogant.

“Well you seem like a decent guy, how about we become friends?” Satoru asked.

“WHAT?!” Veldora shouted, the walls vibrating. “The great Storm Dragon Veldora, friends with a Spider?”

“Ehh...you don’t want to?” He deflated a bit, not sure what happened.

“I didn’t say that?!” he said.

‘Is he Tsundere!?’ He dealt with a few of those types. “Well if you don’t wanna be friends, I’ll understand!”

“Wait, I’ll allow you to be my friend.” He’s hopeless.

“Then it’s settled we are friends!” He had a few drinking buddies, friendly coworkers back in the day.

So on this day Satoru who was stabbed to death and reincarnated as a spider, became friends with the Storm Dragon Veldora.

Veldora gave Satoru some insights about the world. He hadn’t had anyone to talk to for so long, and Satoru was happy to listen he had no information about this world. They were in a special cave in the Great Forrest of Jura. “This isn’t even my den, but I was left here by the hero. Normally this cave is a hunting ground for humans, but since I’ve been here, humans have been too scared to come here.”

“Hunting ground? This place?”

“Normally there are all kinds of monsters, but they are scared of me.” He continued to explain, how the prison was siphoning off his magicules along with sealing his skill.

“That explains why the cave is so full of potent herbs and magnificent ore.” In a video game this would be an adventurer gold mine!

Satoru shared some things from his world with the help of Great Sage. Veldora was amazed, and wanted to know more. “You should learn the Evil Eye Skills.”

“Evil Eye?”

“It’s a Unique Skill with sub skills, normally one can only use two of the evil eye techniques but as someone with 8 eyes.” He had a point. Great Sage took Veldora’s information and much like with Magic Sense unlocked the ability.

He explained how Unique Skills could have Sub Skills that could be very useful. As OP as some Unique Skills sounded it was the sub skills that truly made them dangerous.  Veldora suggested the Eye of Projection. It would allow Satoru to project an image or illusion within his field of vision. Satoru used it to play movies from his memory, one of his little eyes projecting light onto one of the cave walls. The two had a great time.

Satoru’s stomach growled. “Oh man...I’m hungry…” It was a reminder of where he was. He was curious about the world beyond.

“Are you leaving already?” Veldora pouted. Satoru did want to see the outside world, Veldora made it sound so cool. He did feel bad, he didn’t want to leave Veldora behind. Veldora was surviving on his own magicules, and with the prison siphoning it, he’d only live another 200 years. Two lifetimes for some, but living it alone…

Satoru pondered and consulted with Great Sage. “Hey don’t just talk to your skill!”

“Don’t be jealous!” Satoru countered. They used what Veldora taught him about skills, and Great Sage pulled off something amazing.

Accepted: Sub Skill for the Unique Skill Predator unlocked. Devour is available to be used.

“Hey Veldora...how would you like to get in my stomach!?”

Satoru is given a new name, and even gives Veldora a family name. He uses Devour to gobble up the Infinite Prison, so the two can work on it. He’s hungry and goes looking for food, with Veldora gone monsters are coming out to play. This cave really is full of all kinds of monsters. From bug monsters, beast monsters, frogs, snakes, and lizards, and with each new beast he devours new skills are obtained. Rimuru the Spider is gaining power!
