Chapter 4 Genma’s Gambit Ryoga’s Suffering

Genma Saotome was not a good man, he’s spent his life taking advantage of anyone and everyone he could, even before he met Happosai. Soun at least was a good person before he was dragged into Happosai’s shenanigans. So when he got out from under the demon, he was able to lead a good life, met a nice woman, and had three kids, opened up his own dojo. When Genma got out from under Happosai he created some of the most vile and wicked techniques in history, all they did was cause trouble so he started stealing other techniques.

At the end of it Genma was a user, he joined Happosai because he wanted to use the man to get power, he befriended Soun to use him, he used women for years until he met Nadoka who came from a well off and strong family line, and he used her to get him a son, who he’s used for years. He truly would use anyone to get what he wants, and what he wanted now was to make Ranma suffer. ‘I’ll make that boy come crawling back to me begging for forgiveness.’

“I just need to find the perfect pawn!”

“Ranma Saotome Prepare To Die!” Ryoga came racing down the street towards the school.

Genma smirked. “Perfect.”

Ryoga Hibiki had a...unique relationship with Ranma Saotome. Genma had brought the boy to an all boy’s school to get him an education as well as develop fierce rivalries. Ryoga was a piece of work, always getting lost and getting in trouble. He sometimes missed days of school because he’d tried to go to school and end up in another province. By the time he got back to class he had a mountain of homework.

No one expected him to graduate...but he did...

Ranma had been his rival, but was that all he was?

Ryoga had chased the boy all the way to China and to Jusenkyo of all places, where he got his curse. He continued to blame Ranma for his troubles, never taking any accountability, so blinded by rage he forgot other things. The boy who turned into a pig when splashed with cold water, had actually ended up as Akane’s pet. A major yikes was he treated Akane’s affection for the pet pig as affection for him, if he paid attention Akane looked down on him with pity, she saw him as weak and pathetic so Ranma was a “bully” for fighting him. His warped mind took that as ‘She cares about me!’ she really didn’t.

“Today’s the day, I’ll defeat Ranma and win Akane’s heart!” He said the same thing the other day.

Ranma and Shinnosuke were enjoying a nice and quiet day of gym class, when they heard a scream in the distance. “Ranma Saotome Prepare To Die!”

Saotome sighed. “Ryoga again, he’s certainly persistent.” He ruffled his hair in frustration.

“Friend of yours?” Shinnosuke teased. Though he was curious about Ryoga’s story. Kuno wasn’t a big mystery to solve, Ranma was Akane’s fiancee, Kuno was an idiot and liked Akane, so he fought with Ranma, getting his ass kicked, but not giving up. Things got a touch more complicated with the whole Pig Tailed Girl thing, but Shinnosuke didn’t know that part of the story yet.

The pig tailed boy let out a groan. “I thought we were, we spent a lot of time together when we were younger. I actually missed him when dad took me away, and I’d even think about him from time to time. Then when he showed up here he was so mad and angry with me.”

“Sounds like a long story.”

“Yeah...but we got time…” Shinnosuke blinked in confusion, from the shout Ryoga sounded close.

Sure enough, Ryoga made it to the school but got lost, going to classroom after classroom looking for Ranma. A teacher even told him he had gym outside today. “Got it!” He wasn’t able to find the exit. “Where is the sports field?!” He wailed.

To him the school may as well have been an infinity maze, he even ended up at classrooms he already barged in before. Ryoga was burning at 110%, exhausting himself.

He was running around so long, the boys had finished gym, showered, redressed and were heading to their next class. Ranma shared tales of his days with Ryoga from back in the day. He was right they had plenty of time.

They came across Hibiki panting and exhausted in the middle of the hallway. “There you are Saotome, you coward, hiding from me again.” He got up and pointed his umbrella at him.

“Excuse me…” Shinnosuke twitched in annoyance.

Ranma face palmed. “Ryoga...the sports field is outside, behind the school. All you had to do was literally go outside and walk to the back of the school, you could even place your hand on the school wall and follow it around.”

“Shut up!”

“He really does have no sense of direction at all.” He thought Ranma had been joking with some of his stories but no...this kinda checks out.

“Shut up, who even are you?”

“I’m Shinnosuke, Ranma and I go way back.”

“Are you here to kill him to? Well sorry pal, I got here first, Ranma’s head is mine!” He charged at Ranma.

Shinnosuke busted out a push broom and used it to clash with Ryoga. ‘He’s strong…’ He attacked the brunette, only for Shinnosuke to dodge. “Why are you getting in my way?”

He smirked. “Because I want to.”

“Watch it, you don’t wanna make an enemy of me?”

“Hmm, I’m curious, why is Ranma your enemy?”

“Huh?”

“It can’t be about the bread thing, or the fight YOU were late for, even if you were mad about the Jusenkyo thing I don’t get this level of animosity.”

“Shut up, what do you know about it!” Ryoga attacked Shinnosuke only for the brunette to dodge and block him. Hibiki was quite strong, but Shinnosuke has a really tough body from falling into traps and being attacked by animals, dealing with giant powerful beasts every day made him very strong.

“Hmm I wonder, are you so blinded by anger that you’ve forgotten what Ranma did for you?”

“Ha Ranma’s done nothing but ruin my life!”

“Oh really, so it’s not true he used to help you with your mountain of homework, even staying up late to help you get it done.”

“That’s...oh yeah…” Ranma didn’t want him to flunk out of school, so he agreed to help Ryoga out with his homework. ‘I totally forgot, Ranma even got yelled at by a teacher cause he was so tired he fell asleep in class.’

“Is it also not true that Ranma would help you get to school by walking you to the building and your classes?”

“He...umm…” He had forgotten that as well, Ranma would come to his house and make sure he’d get to school on time. It was a tad embarrassing as they had even held hands, to make sure Ryoga wouldn’t suddenly turn and get lost. When Ranma transferred in his life had gotten better. His attendance improved he got his grades up. He managed to graduate, which made his parents happy.

‘Why do I hate Ranma so much?’

Sure lunch was still a war zone, it was every boy for himself. Saotome was a bit vicious as school meals were usually the best meal he got. His home life sucked, but no one would notice as he put on a brave face.

Ranma was also better at Ryoga in sports which made him jealous, but when they were on the same team Ranma worked with him. Hibiki thought Ranma was just showing off, but he was just doing his best.

“It...It’s his fault I’m cursed!” Ranma actually didn’t remember this.

“I don’t remember even seeing Ryoga, I remember running from Pop because he was trying to take my food. I remember seeing someone, but I jumped over them. It must have been Ryoga but I thought I cleared you.” Ranma was in girl form, naked from the when she jumped over Ryoga, the boy looked up and saw...then wham something hit him and he went falling off the cliff and ended up in the spring of drowned pig, shortly after the panda picked him up trying to eat him.

‘Wait a minute...I was running from Pop...that means...fuck my life…’ It had been Genma who barreled into Ryoga and knocked him into the spring, and since Ranma had gotten away with their food, he spotted Ryoga and tried to eat him. The pieces fell into place.

Even Shinnosuke figured it out, but Ryoga was too busy clinging onto his anger to realize it had been Genma who knocked him into the spring. “Well Ryoga, if you didn’t go chasing after Ranma for “revenge” you never would have been in Jusenkyo in the first place.”

His jaw dropped. The facts hit hard. A sadder truth was, because of Ryoga’s lost boy nature he could have ended up in Jusenkyo at any time and gotten cursed.

“You...you...you don’t get it, he’s a pervert and a jerk, he has a girl like Akane and…” Ryoga was lashing out, something so deeply rooted in his brain was being uprooted. He was going off what he’s heard Akane say, but his words were so empty. His mind was actually working and he was thinking about things, and he began to question his experiences with Ranma more.

“Ah yes Akane, from my understanding you aren’t the only one who has feelings for her, do you hate Kuno this much?”

“Well um…”

“You were fighting along side him just the other day.”

“That’s um…” The foundations for his nonsense was being unearthed so easily.

“I’ll tell you what, answer this question for me and I’ll let you fight Ranma.”

“Fine!”

“Why do you like Akane?”

“Huh?” Ryoga blinked.

“It’s not that hard a question is it?” He folded his arms. “I asked Kuno this question and he was able to answer.” He waxed poetically about Akane, a bunch of nonsense in the end but he DID answer.

“Well um...she’s really pretty!”

“Okay, what else?”

“What else?”

“Yes, what else, unless you are so shallow beauty is all that matters to you?”

“No...I…” What did he know about Akane.

“She’s really nice and sweet to me…” As soon as the words left his mouth he realized, no she wasn’t she was nice and sweet to the pig him. “She…”

When he met Akane before, he didn’t think much of her at all, it was only when she was nice to “P-Chan” did he start feeling this way. Ranma and her were engaged, despite it not being what Ranma wanted or Akane, they were two forces thrown together expecting to just get along, anyone would fight and argue like they did. Ryoga took Akane’s side because of his “feelings”, he justified everything because he wanted Ranma to be wrong, he sacrificed any rational thought and his own opinion for Akane, but what was it about Akane that he liked or even loved.

“I think you broke him.”

“It is as I thought, you are not acting on your true feelings, you’ve deluded yourself and clung to your misguided anger. You have brought misfortune to yourself!”

“That’s not true...it’s not true!” Ryoga freaked out and jumped out the window. For a normal person this was incredibly stupid, but Ranma, Ryoga, and Shinnosuke were not normal humans. Ryoga was able to land safely and raced off.

“So...why do you like me?” Ranma asked.

Shinnosuke smiled. “Lots of reasons, but my favorite is right here.” He tapped Ranma’s chest. “This kind heart of yours.”

Ranma blushed. “I don’t think I’m all that kind.”

“You risked your life to save a boy you barely knew, you fought a giant monster to save my life. Even him, he drives you crazy and blames you for so much, yet you’ve forgiven all that haven’t you and you still care about him.” Ranma’s blush grew.

“Maybe I’m just stupid.”

“Maybe, but I like that kind of stupid.” He kissed Ranma’s cheek. Saotome turned the cheek kiss into one on the lips.

Genma caught Ryoga running and made his move. “Oi Ryoga!”

“Mr. Saotome?”

“I’m glad I caught you my boy.”

“Huh?”

“You know Ryoga, I always thought you were like a son to me.” Laying it on thick. “What’s the trouble boy, maybe I can help.”

“It’s just, I’m confused I thought I knew my feelings for Akane but...maybe I’m not…” Genma slapped his shoulders. He was so close to a breakthrough.

“Don’t fall for it. Ranma is tricking you.”

“He’s what?”

“He knows you don’t spend a lot of time with Akane, so you can’t build a proper relationship with her. Think back when you’ve tried to be alone with Akane who gets in your way?” He smirked.

Hibiki balled his hand into a fist. “Ranma!”

What Ryoga didn’t realize is, Ranma cared about him, and he did know Akane more, he knew the kind of girl she was. He didn’t want Ryoga’s fragile heart to break. Saotome even tried to reason with Kuno, but the man was crazy, he wouldn’t listen to Ranma no matter what he said.

“I can help you build a proper relationship with Akane.”

“How?” Genma smirked.

Ranma and Shinnosuke returned to the Tendo house and were surprised to find Ryoga. “Ranma guess who joined the Tendo Dojo!” Kasumi said happily.

He could live on the lot and use the dojo and the open rooms. “Ryoga, this is a bad idea.”

“Why because Akane will start to like me and not you?” He glared at Shinnosuke. “You almost tricked me, but I see the light. I was naive but I’m gonna pursue Akane as a man!”

“Ryoga...listen to me please…”

“I’m going to take a bath!” He got up and walked off. Ryoga was gone, Genma had painted a whole scenario for Ryoga and he wanted it.

Akane saw him go into the bath. She was about to lay down some ground rules for the boy since this was “in her mind” her dojo. Never mind he was going into the bath, this was “her house” she didn’t have to adhere to common etiquette or decency. “Hey Ryoga!” The door flung open.

Ryoga was just rinsing himself with cold water, it was easier to get clean as a pig before jumping into the warm water. Right before Akane’s eyes Ryoga turned into P-Chan. It happened so fast Ryoga didn’t have time to even say her name before all he could do was oink.
