Chapter 1

Yuya Sakaki was the son of Yusho Sakaki, one of the elite duelists in the world. The Duels he had against Yugi and Kaiba were legendary, and while he defeated Seto Kaiba he managed to duel Yugi to a draw. He saw it as a victory since he was able to entertain the world with their duel.

Since then win or loss Yusho has entertained many with his Action Duels. With Kaiba and Yugi’s support a whole new world of dueling began to grow and develop, with Dueling Schools built to hone the next generation of duelists.

Duel Academy Central Island was by far the most popular as it was the one Seto Kaiba fully endorsed. Yusho wanted his son to be trained by the best, so he pulled some strings to get Yuya enrolled in the school.

Said strings allowed Yuya to by pass all testing phases and he’d be having a special duel as a formality. It was too show off the intricate and amazing Action Duels that were the wave of the future.

Because of the grand spectacle Yusho was making the limelight was all on Yuya, which meant a massive amounts of pressure. Because of his father’s stunt the media was all over this story, and of course if Yuya lost this duel, he’d not be allowed to attend Duel Academy Central.

His wife was concerned. “Dear, don’t you think you are putting a lot of pressure on Yuya?”

“Nonsense, he’s my son, what could go wrong?” She wanted to punch him so hard.

Yuya was still figuring out his dueling style and he hadn’t actually one a duel yet, action or otherwise. Yusho didn’t want to hear this already patting himself on the back for the brilliant idea he had.

All Yusho knew about his son was that he wanted to be a duelist. He was often off gallivanting doing tours and shows. There was no shortage of challengers around the world that wanted to duel him. Yuya practically picked up dueling, so he could do something with his father when he came home.

It was hard for her to, but she married him, she picked him, Yuya didn’t get that choice, and was stuck trying to live up to his father’s legacy.

Sora was standing in the crowd, sucking on a sucker as he watched the other applicants. He was a second year of Obelisk Blue, taking a look at the new potential and he wasn’t the only one. Reiji Akaba was another second year, he came from a wealthy family, but he had shocked everyone as he demanded to start in Slifer Red, and he earned his place in Obelisk Blue from the ground up.

There were even some Third Years scoping out the competition. Zane Truesdale was looking as stoic as ever. “I’m surprised he showed up.” Sora licked his sucker. “He’s so cold I get the chills just looking at him.”

“His friend went missing last year he has a right to be cold.” Akaba said.

“Oh yeah...what was his name?”

“Atticus Rhodes, my brother!” Alexis stepped up and the two gave her a polite bow. She was entering Duel Academy as a first year, but her placement was already Obelisk Blue by her abilities alone.

Alexis walked passed the two and ended up standing by Zane who was focused on one match in particular. His little brother Syrus was entering Duel Academy and Zane wasn’t pleased.

There were a lot of spectators way more than the year before. “What’s got everyone so buzzed?”

“Sakaki Yusho’s son is supposed to be competing today, as a way of showing off the Action Duel system.”

“No way, really?” Zane nodded.

“You think he’s actually gonna go to school with us or is this all a publicity stunt.”

“Hard to say, we’ll see what he can do when he duels.”

A boy named Bastion Misawa, scored very highly defeating his opponent in just a few turns.

Syrus was struggling against his opponent, with all the people watching he was getting some severe test anxiety.

Isao Kachidoki was using an Earth and Wind Warrior deck, he managed to summon his boss monster Idaten the Conqueror Star. He was aggressive in his dueling pummeling his opponent’s monsters.

Noboru Gongenzaka was using a Superheavy Samurai Deck, his style was all monsters not a spell to be found in his entire deck. With the mighty defense of his monsters he managed to crush his opponent. ‘Where is he?’

It appears Yuya was running late. He was supposed to arrive early and prepare with Crowler for the action duel. ‘Late is rude!’ Doctor Crowler was getting impatient. ‘Even if he is the son of Yusho Sakaki he should have better manners. It wasn’t clear if I was meant to go easy on him or not, but I might as well show him the power of an elite duelist like myself.’ It was a win-win in his mind, he could show off and punish the tardy party. He chuckled to himself.

Syuzo Hiiragi a teacher at duel academy and the advisor between the Red and Yellow Dorm. ‘He’s up to something again, Crowler’s got such bad habits.’

All the students had finished their duels, but no one had left yet. Everyone was waiting to see Sakaki’s son in action.

Suddenly a clown came out on the field, riding on a big red ball. Noburo smirked. ‘He’s here!’

“Who is that clown...security!” Clown Yuya was juggling balls before releasing them creating a multicolored smoke screen.

“Ladies, Gentleman, and Non Binary Specimen!” Yuya cheered. “You have all studied hard and worked even harder to make it into Duel Academy. A special exhibition match was planned today, and I didn’t want to get in the way of your duels, now you all get to see this performance!” Yuya threw off his clothes, using the smoke as cover to do a quick change.

When the smoke cleared he wasn’t a clown anymore but was rocking up as a duelist. “So he showed up after all. Very well then.” Crowler got up, Hiiragi offered him a test deck to use, but the blonde professor ignored it. “I have the perfect deck to test him with.”

The duel field was set and Syuzo manned the controls. Crowler chose Gear Town, while Yuya picked Performapal Circus, the third field was the Battle City Field, designed by Seto Kaiba himself. “Since you were late, the field choice goes to me!”

Action duels went like this, every field had a set of Action Spells and Action Traps, that can aide a duelist or hinder. The duelists also get to select 5 Action Spells to be added to the mix. The action cards would be shuffled and scattered around the dueling field.

“Action Duel Start!” Crowler had a duel vest, while Yuya was using a Duel Disk.

Thanks to hard light technology they were able to create a full battlefield. This added a whole new layer to duels.

Crowler wasn’t an expert in action duels or anything, but he had PHD in dueling. It didn’t help that Yuya practically bricked to boot.

To make matters worse his one good trap card was blown away by Heavy Storm. Crowler’s game had begun using the two face downs he had set to summon tokens upon unleashing the Heavy Storm.

He sacrificed his tokens and unleashed his ace monster the Ancient Gear Golem. Yuya raced around using the hippo monster he summoned, and using Action Cards, he managed to avoid getting destroyed and spare his life points.

Sakaki even sacrificed some of the bricks in his hand to avoid taking damage.

On Crowler’s turn he used a card called Confiscation which allowed him to pay 1000 life points to look through Yuya’s hand and discard a card. ‘He’s got monster reborn a weak wolf and a dragon that requires at least two tributes to summon. The dragon’s ability could be trouble.’ If he summons the wolf, he’d have two monsters, even if Ancient Gear Golem destroys one he’d be able to special summon one with Monster Reborn, then tribute the two and summon the dragon. ‘The answer is obvious isn’t it.’ Even if he got rid of the two monsters he’d just revive them with Monster Reborn. “To the grave monster reborn!”

The spell was destroyed. It was time to battle and Yuya rushed to get another Action Card but the one he got wasn’t helpful for this situation. As a giant mechanized fist came swinging and blasting Yuya’s monster dropping his life points down to 1800.

‘Even if he summons the weak wolf, his life points won’t survive the onslaught.’ Ancient Gear Golem had a piercing effect, even a monster in Defense Mode wouldn’t save him. ‘I don’t have to worry about his action cards either.’

One could only hold 1 action card at a time. ‘It’s over, I win!’

Pride comes before the fall, Yuya makes a draw getting Pot of Greed, which he quickly plays. ‘This is it...I have to make this draw or I’m gonna lose…’ His heart began to pound.

As his anxiety sought to swallow him up, words came to mind, not words from his father but from his mother. “Yuya, duel how you want to, win or lose always be yourself and have fun!” His heart began to race, the stage was set, the right draw could make this a stellar performance.

Draw!

Stargazer and Timegazer Magicians, a pair of Pendulum Monsters. “Set the scales...let the pendulum of fate swing!”

“A...A...A...Pendulum Summon!?” Crowler gasped. It was a feature that came out after his schooling. He was adept at Fusion, aware of Xyz and Synchro, but Pendulum was a whole new world of game play.

With the scales set Yuya was able to summon Performapal Silver Claw and Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon!

“Fufufu, check your math, you don’t have enough power to defeat me.”

Yuya took a stance. “Ladies, Gentleman, and Non Binary Specimen! It’s time to put on a show!” He activated his Action Spell.

Battle Ball!

A giant clown ball appeared, this was one of the action cards Yuya picked out, it granted a monster a + 500 attack until the end of the turn, but that wasn’t all. His odd eyes dragon jumped on the ball and began making it roll around and around. The crowd couldn’t help but cheer and applaud at the acrobatic dragon.

Crowler thought he survived this, even if he took double battle damage, he’d survive, and he had his own Monster Reborn in his hand, he’d turn this around on his next turn.

“Battle Ball has one other effect, it drops the ATK of one monster that this monster battles.” His dragon rolled the ball towards the Ancient Gear Golem, it explodes covering the monster in red sticky goo.

Ancient Gear Golem: 2500

“Wait!” Crowler looked around.

Jumping from the ball Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon got some air as he readied a powerful blast. The attack hit and the golem was blown up, the goo being an explosive causing the field to be lit up with fireworks. Since he was taking damage his dragon doubled it.

Crowler 2000

Silver Claw only had 1800 ATK. ‘I’ll survive this and get my revenge.’

“When Performapal Silver Claw attacks all Performapal monsters gain 300 ATK!”

“Wait what?!”

Silver Claw chased Crowler around the gear town, he saw an action card but before he could reach it the wolf bit him in the butt and dropped his life points to 0.

Yuya struck a performer’s bow with his monsters, the duel ended with the field and monsters turning to light and vanishing. Crowler had a hole in his pants showing off his underwear. “Gah!”

These were hard light holograms making the monsters very real, so would the damage they cause. This level of dueling was only for the most serious of students. It truly was a satisfying duel even if some members in the crowd saw Yuya’s win as only luck.

‘I’m going to Duel Academy.’

A boy with brown hair rode on a motorcycle to a secluded location, as the helmet was removed revealed Jaden Yuki. “Get lost punk, you aren’t welcome here!” The other figure was a tall brunette wearing all black and he had a dark mask on his face.

“I have an invitation you could say.”

“You might be one of the duelists scouted by the boss, this place is only for the Shadow Riders.”

“Funny you say that.” Jaden twirled his shadow charm, an old looking ink pen with a golden eye forged in the side. “I happen to be one!”

“Oh then you wouldn’t be scared to face me in a shadow duel?” He readied his Duel Disk.

Jaden chuckled. “Tell me Nightshroud, how many people have you taken, how many souls have you drained, how many hosts have you left as nothing but husks?”

“So you know about me, I’m honored.”

“Yes I know about you. A lowly parasite that leaves plenty of bodies in his wake. You duel to rob the body of the soul so you can quickly possess them. That one is your newest host.” Jaden loaded his duel disk.

“You bastard!” Nightshroud wasn’t the man but the mask, he was a creature of darkness, but his powers were weak compared to others. Parasite was a fitting word to call him, as he goes from host to host, draining them of their energy and their minds to grow stronger. He drives his hosts hard so that when he jumps from one to the other, they turn to dust so burned out they had nothing to keep their forms in this world.

“Duel!”

To be continued...Shadow Pen

Jaden shows off his deck, facing Nightshroud’s Red Eyes Deck, using Atticus’s skills as a duelist to try and win. He messed with the wrong duelist as Jaden schools the parasite and he faces the punishment of his own Shadow Game. Atticus is free but he becomes apart of Jaden’s ink army.
