You talk like our planet is special, and it is... to us. Even for our sun, he had been trough about 1-2 planets like our already, it is nothing special to him. So if we exclude Earth being special to just special to us, then destroying the planet has only historical value and not really the actuall value, beause in some time we may be like our sun, after a few of these planets already.

To me, the last conversation was like let nature decide if he lives or dies. If he lives that could be good for the planet because he is the solution that will cull the human race which is acting as a poison using pollution. He knows by letting him live, he is allowing him to kill again and endanger all of humanity and more importantly all his friends and family. This would be "the greater good." Then he clearly says "one human can only hope to do so much. The best he can do is protect his family (and friends)." This is looking at it from a human perspective. He even said I shouldn't place the moral values of a human on something that is literally not human. For example, you wouldn't place fault on a lion for killing. Let's say a lion killed your dog. You can say yeah I totally understand. Lion got to eat, too bad it was my dog. That's just nature. OR you can go this motha-bleeping lionass mothafuk* killed my dog! I'mma kill that *bleeper*! I don't care if it kills me! I'm angry!!!! *rips off shirt* RAWR~~~~ That would be taking the situation from a human perspective. Nature doesn't care. It has no emotions (as Migi says). It doesn't matter if you live or die or another race goes extinct. This flying hunk of rock will continue floating through space until it gets destroyed with or without any living beings living upon it. So Shinichi decided to be human and protect his friends and family. He did what was morally right "as a human" and destroyed the threat before "it" can destroy humanity and more importantly the people he loves and cares about.

Its interesting because it's true the Earth itself as an organism would benefit (or at least the life and vegetation that thrive on it representing it's health) but as a single human, Shinichi would benefit, by not taking any chances and protecting his friends and family. The world will come out with a terrible storm, eruption, earthquake, disease, ect. In order to tame population. We reap what we sow. Hell, even humans mass murder other humans. Something will happen to level out a population (like people globally deciding they dont want children) and thus pollution, ect. If we can help it, we should at least keep our inner circles protected. That's likely the conclusion Shinichi reached. -

“Let the powers that be decide”. Migi’s comment made Shinichi realize he is the powers that be in this situation. Appealing to 50/50 chance is just another choice he could make, but it’s not really any more noble of a choice in the grand scheme of things

Rugo

you missed the part where migi said that "I hate humans who say they're doing something for the earth, because the earth has no emotions", the reason for changing his mind was deeper than that, but I'm pretty sure thats what solidified his decision

I 100% agree with Shinichi's decision to kill Gotou. There would be more of a moral question if the individual in question was someone whose whole purpose wasn't to just kill and fight. Like in my mind there would be more of an issue if it was someone like Tamiya who probably would've tried to live as peacefully as possible, but with someone like Gotou it is just a case of making sure a super powerful serial killer doesn't go loose again.
