eh both are great concepts and the Overlord novels have incredible detail. But in terms of overall anime adaptation/storytelling there are still shows that haven't even really appeared in the polls that I would say are more "Peak"

Nah, I didn't care at all about Demon Slayer, Overall I think Mob was the best show of the 3, but perfectly fine with Overlord winning both on its own merits and to finish up isekai Quartet. I just don't think the anime adaptation of Overlord is on the same level as Bookworm, Log Horizon etc. Let alone Re-zero(novels are closer though), As for Gate I think the anime adaptation ends before they get to the parts I find truly interesting and the story fails to fully use its cool premise but I still voted for it fairly often in the tournaments in part because Luke always liked the openings/trailers etc. so much

Luke, right off the start of the reaction MC got into conclusion that he was not in a "game" anymore lol you even read out loud about him being in another world and if he can find his way back to his old world. His NPC's have a pulse now and they actually speak and think instead of follow basic commands like the ones he used before server shutdown. Hope this answered most of your questions Luke! :D

Man I love this anime but it leaves so much information out. I guess main reason was fear of overcomplicating the anime but in alot of cases it leaves you clueless to the things that have been done. I do think you will enjoy it though... Now guys, lets make him watch Isekai Quartet after he finish season 1

I love Overlord! So glad you are starting it now. The show slowly explains things so it will take time but you will learn more as you go. One thing that you did eventually seem to pick up on that the show kinda assumes you know is at the beginning it called the game a "Dive Massively Multiplayer Online" game. I think the term Dive came from (or at least popularized) Sword Art Online and means they use a device to take their consciousness into the game. What the show doesn't go into as much is how complex and detailed the game actually was. The light novel explains it pretty well, but you can get the gist of everything in the show though

Okay, so isekai is more than being reincarnated somewhere. The barest definition is literally just being sent to another world. How doesn't matter, and what happens after doesn't matter either, unless it adds to it. For example, reverse isekai are usually where someone's world has others isekaid in their world- like Solo Leveling kinda counts for that. There's also some anime where the main character is born in a fantasy world, gets isekaid to our world, then they go back to their world- like the plot of Doctor Elise.

it's interesting you brought up the good old days when everyone had time to play with their friends online. the writer of overlord actually brought up his own experiences of playing DND then eventually he had to stop because no one else had time anymore. he loved writing stories and campaigns and that's what eventually led him to writing overlord.

The light novel has a lot of worldbuilding and explanations, but unfortunately the anime skipped a lot of it (for obvious pacing reasons), so there might be a few questions that will not be answered in the anime, hence why I think it 's important you read the comments for light novels explanations. For exemple, the amphitheater is underground yes, and the beautiful sky is an artistic rendition by a guild member of what the night sky would look like in the real world, because since it's set in the future, pollution blocked the sky and they all live in a shitty distopian world (Herohero mentioning is body giving up because of his overtime) .

Something that's never explained in the anime. Guardian of the 8th floor is called victim because it's a weak monster. Easy to kill, but once dead it unleashes a trap that immobilizes all enemies, making them easy pickings for the level 90 monsters of the 8th floor. (It actually stopped an invasions of 1500 players and NPCS that reached the 8th floor, then got wiped) not super important. Just something the anime never mentions.

The term Isekai literally means "another world", so the details such as "How?" don't really matter. "Tensei" means reincarnation and is the means for many isekai. Many also have it in their name (Mushoku TENSEI, TENSEIshitara Slime datte ken, etc.).

tensei mean rebirth, Isekai means another world. I- a prefex that means 'different' Sekai - world so Isekai means different world, any anime that includes traveling to a different world by any means would be an isekai, it doesnt matter if they are not reborn, if the world isn't a fantasy world, or even if they can freely come and go from the world.

You just watched new isekai animes, transported after death is newer trope. Check out Inuyasha for other transportations or even the Alice in Wonderland 80s anime... Yggdrasil... A sacred tree from Norse mythology, it connects all 9 realms (Asgard, Midgard...). Imho the concept is easy to understand, the game ended but the world that it created lives on. Reminds me of a Toy story basis idea - Human creation gains life. Now the protagonist can experience the fantasy world with his own skeleton sences 😁 But ... I don't know... I will try to watch at least the 1st season to formulate a solid opinion.

(no spoilers) for a bit of context that was missed out from the light novel, the vr he had to play the game was limited so that certain senses and actions couldn't be recreated(hence the surprise at smell) in order to avoid confusion of what's real or not to avoid scammers, hence why he checked he could touch albedo.

'Yggdrasil' is the name of the tree in Norse mythology that the 9 realms are connected to, the archetypal 'World Tree.' It's pretty common for fantasy anime to use words from other languages and mythologies for the names of their places and spells.

The term 'isekai' literally means 'other world' so it's pretty broad. I would say game worlds count as 'isekai', but it's hard to justify where the line between game and isekai is in the fully immersive vr games a lot of stories have. Overlord, In the Land of Leadale and a few others literally transition into a separate world from reality while something like Sword Art Online just makes it impossible for the players to log out, then you have ones like Bofuri and Free Life Fantasy Online where they can taste, smell, feel and everything but they can log out whenever. There are a couple I've been reading that even start changing the real world to become like the game. I'm of the opinion that if the world and AI is so advanced it feels real while you're there, it's an isekai.

Reincarnation and Isekai are not the same thing. 'Isekai' means 'different world from ours'. Nowadays lots of Isekai shows use reincarnation as their gimmick to send there MC to different world so lots of people associate those two together. Re.zero is an Isekai but not by reincarnation and Oshi no ko has reincarnation but their not in a different world so it's not an Isekai.

Overlord has extensive worldbuilding. The anime has to cut things for pacing reasons, but we can fill you in on stuff in the comments. Otherwise you learn as the MC learns things, for the most part.

- Not a Spolier - So this show does assume the veiwer has a certain degree of knowledge regarding tropes and concepts used in anime, one being the Full Dive VR, its been used in quite a few anime now but was really popularised by Sword Art Online. Basically, imagine a VR headset that interfaces directly with the brain, all of our vision/hearing/touch/taste/smell is just electrical signals sent to the brain, the headset intercepts those signals and transmits its own data, you see/hear etc the game world as if it was real, likewise when you try to move/run/jump/speak etc, those signals are sent to your character in the game world rather then to your real world body. You put on the headset and then lay down on your bed at home, your body is essentially comotose in the real world until you log out. Edit: Oh and infact this technology is actually being researched in real life aswell.

I am not in any way disappointed by the choice of HxH for twitch watchalongs, but I was honestly hoping that One Piece would be able to be the new Twitch show. What was the point of thaving two polls and two streams with 8 different animes? Was this a contest between all 8 of them? Will OP be the next show that we watch? I know HxH was winning in one poll and OP was winning in the other, so that seems fair to me, but again, why prioritize the one poll over the other? I just dont really understand the selection process... Anyways, I am still very excited to see your reaction to HxH, it is one of the OG shonen animes that really sets itself apart from the big three because of the pacing and general vibe being completely different. One of my favorite shows of all time along with Overlord! There's typically three mains ways that isekai protagonists will be brought to another world. First: Reincarnation. And even within Reincarnation, you have one where they are reincarnated into a new body, and the other where the Goddess just brings them as is. An example of the later would be Konosuba. Second: Possession. While this can often be coupled Reincarnation in some ways, possession is slightly different, in that the main character possesses an already established character. While it's often paired with Reincarnation as the vessel for them, I would separate Possession because not all possessions are done through reincarnation. Third: Summoned/Transported. This one is usually the one where the main character is meant to be a hero or part of a group of heroes. But essentially, the other world usually casts a spell that summons the main character. Transported is the same, except usually they aren't specifically called for and randomly come over.

Dude, how is Overlord not an isekai? This guy gets sent straight out into different world/universe where there is living, breathing beings just like you or me. He isnt seeing pixels and NPC tag over theyr heads. The MC literally takes over his game character and ends up in a REAL WORLD. Dont know much about log horizon since that was nothing like i wanted/expected it to be. SAO defo is not an isekai, by definition if you remember people got stuck with headgear with deathswitch in em stuck in a server, by that logic you can propably argue that everyday mmo player is now in isekai element. :D

I didn't say Overlord ISNT an isekai. I was using the other person's logic to prove/show that SAO is. And yes I would say a real life VRMMO player IS isekai'ed but a normal looking at a flat screen mmo... no definitely not isekai. An isekai by definition is being in a world that isn't the one you were born in. There no stipulation that states it has to be a REAL world. Thus it can be virtual.... hell it could even be a dream. If the main character is in a different world then 50 epusodes later they wake up in their bed and the plot twist is it was all a dream, that STILL counts as an isekai. The Matrix would also fit the definition of isekai. So go find me a definition that says it can't be a video game or imaginary world. I'll wait

Soooo..I put VR headset on my head and play a game i am in isekai? How does that work? I am pretty sure to this date almost everyone agrees that isekai is labeled in these basic troupes. #1 guy/girl dies is reincarnated in another world. #2 guy/girl transmigrates using a medium of some sort to get iskeai'd i.e Gate, re:zero, overlord and even older title such as Inuyasha or Rayearth (F*ck i'm old) just to throw in few titles from the top of my head. These are the definitions isekai troupes have followed for god knows how long. What i am trying to say that it was already very specificly defined, putting a headset on and off doesnt make you isekai, in SAO people couldnt get out because of deathswitch in the headgear so folks were trapped in there against theyr will otherwise folks could of have just on/off anytime they wanted and live theyr normal days as usual. oh god i was out of town with no internet, so i had no idea overlord was coming up on the anime watch list. the anime is fun, but after having read the light novels it's based on, it really doesn't do the series justice (in my opinion). it tends to be a little more comedic, and certain scenes lose a lot of their impact because of information that was cut out. if you end up liking the series, i recommend reading the light novels yourself (or listening to audiobooks ofc), or looking around some channels on youtube that break down content that was cut from the show.
