THIS IS GETTING HEAVY!!!!

Here is the FULL and UNBLURRED reaction to RE:ZERO Season 2 Episode 22!

Enjoy!!

William Armstrong

5:40 Priscilla is in his head. Arc 5/ season 3 hype

Fabien

Honestly don't apologize because I found Emilia's 2nd trial very boring (but I found her past, the 1st trial, just amazing, with lots of revelations). The rest of episode is cool (Beatrice's dialogue, the fights...), but that trial scene brought nothing and is too long imho. Next ep is pure fire tho. edit: Puck isn't at full strength yes.

giovanny rivas

Yeeees please Watch the trailer!!

ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ ΒΥΡΓΙΩΤΗΣ

The reason Emilia was surprised about her reflection in the water was because ever since she came out of the ice, she was compared to Satella and she was called a witch so she never looked at a mirror because she didn't want to see herself, she didn't want to look at the face that looked like the witch of Envy but she finally decided to see herself as her own person when the second trial ended

Kevin

Itadakimasu = thank you for the meal ('u' is offen silent), ittekimasu = literally "I go and come (back)" so it means I'm going/see you later

Pyzlnar

32:33 To quickly explain the part where she looks at herself on the lake. Long story short, a clause on Emilia's contract with Puck is that she were not to see herself in a mirror. So Emilia had not seen herself in yeaaars (Puck did her hair). So from Emilia's perspective she's just been shunned by her appearance from the moment she woke up with no memories and had not seen herself ever. So she was basically scared of how she looked at this point. When she does look at herself she just realizes "Huh, I don't look as much as Mother Fortuna as I'd hoped". This detail was left out of the anime, but the sequence doesn't make as much sense without knowing it.

24:00 it is the 2nd trial, its not a flashback, it never *actually* happened.

Micheal Magnuson

37:30 Emilia states (my Japanese is flimsy so forgive me if im wrong) "いくだきます (i-KU-dakimasu)” which means "I'm going" The phrase that Japanese often say before eating is "いただきます(i-TA-dakimasu)" Very similar but different and she said it very quickly too which makes it harder for a non-native speaker

Anonymous

I guess it's a great idea to check out the s3 trailer. Maybe in the same video where you will rewatch the openings?

Adam

Luke and having a cold, name a more iconic duo. Maybe Luke and reading too much into benign statements lol. All jokes aside, I hope you're alright, you seem to get a lot of colds.

Anonymous

It is pronounced BeteL - geuse, not BeLte - geuse

Luca Bellan

It's perfectly okay Luke, everyone has their own preferences. Like you said, these "flashbacks" are probably meant to build up the tension for the main events, but not being too fond of the suspence they create is understandable 🤣. The important thing is understanding their importance for the reasons you yourself mentioned, so rest assured, your doing great. P.S. Itadakimasu: is for the food, meaning literally "I'm starting to take (the food). Ittekimasu: is a formula used when you're leaving home, implying you'll soon be back. P.S.S. they've actually announced today that season 3 will air on March 23 at Anime Japan. So enjoy the rest of the season (next episode is going to be peak) and prepare for what's coming!

FaerieRose

Ittekimasu means “I’m going.” Itadakimasu means “Thanks for the food.” Also, if you don’t hate flashbacks, maybe don’t complain about them every single time?

KeanuofRivia

Got some info for yuh that was in the light novel but the anime skipped and doesn't explain. No spoilers I promise! Emilia has always avoided seeing her own reflection because she's very insecure about her appearance. People have always hated her on sight. You see here that she looks at the mirror and that she sees her appearance in the water and is surprised by it. That's because she's been avoiding seeing herself for years. She's finally facing it now

Anonymous

Yes! Please react to the s3 trailer

Heiron

Anyone knows why Echidna was crying? I am anime only so I was always confused about it as I don't know if she is really related to Emilia or not. I don't mind some spoilers if someone knows from the source material.

Anonymous

Itadakimase means thank you for the meal ittekimasu means let's go (to somewhere) or I go to (somewhere) etc point is it's not the same word

Cédric Michaud

And if I'm not wrong "itte" is the verb going and "kimasu" is the verb "kuru" to come back, so the expression would basically be "I'm going and will come back".

Micheal Magnuson

Yeah since I’m still learning I don’t quite understand the correct grammar with specific verbs yet. Like “iku” means to go as well if I’m not mistaken so I’m not sure when to use which verb yet

Bobby Vang

Flashbacks eh.... you're going to dislike the big older animes, there's tons of Flashbacks. Sometimes there's Flashbacks within Flashbacks.... xD

Daniel Golas

Your main theory make sense, good theory. I think it may be possible but my main theory is something else

Jeff Drake

Emilia's self-hatred manifests itself in a pretty common way: She avoids mirrors. She's coming to grips with who she is as a person and felt that ending the trail by diving into the water was a way to force herself to confront her avoidance. That is why she commented about her eyes not looking much like Fortuna's. Someone else commented that it was part of the contract she and Puck had. I have my doubts, but I haven't dug into every piece of the webnovel or the light novel, so I could be off. Seems more likely that she had an issue with her appearance due to the constant barrage of people noticing her appearance and thinking, "SHIT! It's Satella! CAST HER OUT!" Puck is running on low energy. He had to use a lot of his mana to break the contract with Emilia, which left him very weak. Subaru gave him a boost when he hit Garfiel with the crystal and Puck "drank" Garfiel's mana. Had he not done so, that first punch he hit Subaru with would probably have killed him. The good news is that Garfiel's Divine Protection is Earth based and he is able to recuperate quickly, so long as he is touching the ground. Garfiel is at full strength going at Elsa, and that fight is only just getting started.

Matthew Williams

Echidna absolutely hates Emilia because she wants and loves Subaru and the biggest person in his heart is Emilia, she thinks that Emilia doesn't deserve Subaru's love. Because of the strength of heart that Emilia is showing in the trails it's bothering Echidna because of that she is becoming conflicted.

Emilis2023

I've always said in ReZero Rem is best girl, but if you took any of the other girls, or some of the men or animals for that matter, and planted them in nearly any other series, they'd instantly be 'best girl' of that series.

_____ Rasse _____

I'm pretty sure we don't have an explanation for why she cried. I haven't read the LN for arc 4 though, so I'm not a 100% sure. As for whether they're related or not, we don't know. Some theorize that Echidna is Emilia's mom, and another person who's often theorized to be her mom is Minerva, but there hasn't been any confirmation on who it is.

nik

season 3 is not airing on march 23rd... they are announcing the release date of season 3 which is most likely going to air Fall 2024

Matthew Williams

That is an impossible question to answer since who Emilia's parents are has never actually been revealed. We can assume because of how much Echidna has hated Emilia at first then seeing how Emilia has excepted her past and come to terms with a bright future that could never be that those tears are more out of frustration and having to except Emilia's strength then any actual love for her. Maybe a bit of empathy for Emilia too.

Kevin

And you are right, iku means to go. But ittekimasu is a phrase that completely translated means literally "to go and come". Iku and kuru connected with the te form of iku (itte) and in the masu form. It's often just translated to "I'm going" because in the context of leaving the house this is what one would say in English. Nobody would say "I'll be going and will come back". Sometimes you will see "see ya later" or I'm leaving", that doesn't mean iku or kuru mean "see, later or leave". Try not to translate literally when learning japanese. Their way of expressing things can sometimes be way too different.

Ron Farmer

That paused second with Emilia looking at her reflection in the water is just epic... I love it. BTW my favourite episode is coming ❤️❤️❤️

Kevin

26:18 I am curious if you did that on purpose or if Luke just knows his audience too well :D

Anonymous

Yeah, I thought of deleting the comment after he said that, but it just to felt to me that he was disregarding the meaning of the trial, because it was “just another flashback” 😅

Lichmourne

Technically.... this wasnt a flashback... it was an unthinkable present. hehe

Daniel Golas

My theory is that echidna knows Emilia in a way we dont, she obviously hate her and with her now seeing who emilia is now and who she became, she propably feel some symphaty which piss her off cuz she wants to keep hating her( like someone evil kills your family and after years you find that person lost his memmory and he is completely different person, absolute sweetheart, you still hate him but...) that is my theory

Matthew Williams

Until the author finally decides to start filling in that family tree we won't know for certain but with the information we do currently have we at least know that none of the witches except for maybe Pandora could possibly be Emilia's mother. That isn't speculation it's fact. Although we don't know exactly what date Emilia was born on currently it is 107 years since she froze herself, so she is somewhere around 114 years old. All of the witches except Satella and Pandora died more then 400 years in the past, with Satella being sealed after "killing" the other witches 400 years ago as well. Also considering we know that Emilia's father is a full blood elf (Fortuna's brother) and Emilia is a half elf that means Emilia's mother would be a full blood human.

Emilis2023

I always saw it as Echidna seeing Emilia offered everything she could have wanted for her present, then turning it down to live in a painful reality instead. Something incomprehensible and upsetting to a Witch of Greed.

Keith Merrington

Ittekimasu more fully means "I'm going and coming back" - it's a te-kuru form, meaning to do the first verb (iku - to go) and then come back. So it's more like "I'm off, I'll be back".

Siilan

Itadakimasu means "thank you for this meal." Ittekimasu basically means, "I'm leaving and will return."

Taiga

16:58 It's the same age Emilia. The difference is, in her current real life, her character is more adult, due to her circumstances, having no family, etc. In her 'unthinkable present' she's an innocent kid, who still grows up with her family in a peaceful life, so she's like this. There's no reason for her to be stronger & more adult than what she's supposed to be - a 16 year old girl.

Rafael Souza

This wasn't a flashback... It was a Trial, meant for Emilia to surpass and evolve some aspect of her. The meaning behind this trial was for Emilia to accept herself as she is. - Right at the beginning, she said she would look in the mirror, but she stopped, you could see fear in her eyes, the thought of looking in a mirror made her scared. I think you didn't notice it at all, but try looking at it again now. - The reason for it is because she has always been hated by everyone because she looks like the Witch. She is afraid of her own appearance and decided to never look in a mirror. She is basically "rejecting" her own looks. Puck is the one who does her hair and choses her outfits. She doesn't wanna look in the mirror and see "the Witch" everyone talks about. - At the end of the trial she accepted herself, even tho it means accepting the fact that she looks like the Witch. The moment she jumps into the water is the moment she finally sees herself for who she is.

Dorcusss

if you wanna watch the opening and ending, you could just watch them at the beginning and end of the episode and edit it out xD

Regill Derenge

I can't wait to be done with this anime jeez... I hate it zzz

Kyle Garrett

The point of simultaneous scenes isn't just to create cliff hangers, but to create a sense of multiple things happening at the same time. Fully seeing the roswaal fight, then fully seeing the mansion, then fully seeing all of Emilia's trials and interactions outside the trials would break that illusion entirely. Spacing things this way also allows each piece to support one another. For example, 5 straight episodes of just Emilia and Emilia flashbacks would be too much so spacing it out makes sense. You're viewing it as padding out the fight, while I see it as the exact opposite. The fights are used to space out the Emilia scenes so the viewer remains invested each time they see them.

ArtKi

2:09 Garf can be stronger. yes. BUT He's vulnerable while transforming He's not guaranteed to have full control in his "Garfield" form 5:20 Ref Priscilla and how the world works for her. I'm assuming it's a divine blessing. 27:35 "It's unknown whether the Bishop lives." Hmmm. I guess that means that EMILIA doesn't know what happened. Subaru hasn't had a chance to tell her. HE'S BEEN BUSY!

Kyla

It is so sad that it took 400years in isolation, until subaru arrived, for beatrice to realize, that the blank pages were meant for her own story....

ArtKi

If I remember correctly, most of Berserk is a flashback and there's many episodes that are a flashback within that flashback.

Anonymous

you also have to react to the full version of the opening "realize" :)

James Perrott

nah it definitely isnt current age emilia, she is visually younger (by like 2 or 3 years physicall) in this trial Her eyes are bigger and closer together slightly compared to her head, and she is noticably shorter. Idk why she is since it isnt exactly the present but yeah she is still slightly younger

James Perrott

Cannot belive there are people here actually trying to correct you that it isnt a flashback, even though you literally pointed that out in the reaction and your point is still the exact same Some people just cannot listen

The Pots

another emotional moment didn't got to Luke cuz he explained the stuff about "flashbacks" on that very moment. I cried on this second trial

Illiterate Mochi

About the writing technique of interrupting a tense scene with a flashback or something else.... I suppose some might call that... edging? Lmao

OvidLiam

Nice summary, but he also a few minutes after said he knew it wasn't a flashback.

R_Vengeance V

Wait till you see naruto for flashback and filler hell

Hatoma

Comon mistake, itadakimasu don't mean thank you for the meal, since japenese use this word for a lot of other thing. It's more like a way to show how greatfull you're (for the meal or other stuff). But it's don't mean thank you for the meal at all. That's why the most common itadakimasu translation is: 頂きます(いただきます) to receive; to get; to accept; to take.

I can't believe Luke hates flashbacks. ADHD is serious with streamers.

mohal

"He feels so entitled he has to express how he dislikes a show many others like in the comment thread for episode 47 of that show, what a prick" is what I meant :)

Anonymous

37:17 You say "it-te-ki ma-su"(行ってきます) when you go, "i-ta-da-ki ma-su"(いただきます) when you start eating, and "go-chi-sō sa-ma de-shi-ta"(ご馳走さまでした) when you finished and thank you for the food.

Katerflori

Yes please watch the Trailer for S3 at the end! It's very good :D

rostikowb

I don't know exactly what this method is called. But it is done to make cool moments seem even cooler. Writers use the peculiarities of our brain. To make the peak moment seem even more "peak" we have to go down. This makes the mountain seem even bigger, if you know what I mean.

rostikowb

Maybe all the shonen have a lot of flashbacks, especially Naruto, although I liked them. Learning about the past of Pain, Jirai, Tsunade, and especially Itachi was cool If you think about it, we had flashbacks for almost all the characters in the story, and not just once for each one 😂

rostikowb

On a patreon? How? You can pay a subscription, not watch this particular anime, and still support Luke. Why suffer if you don't like it? For example, I know for sure that I won't watch One Piece when it wins, and that slot won't be available to me for the rest of my life, but there are other slots

You keep mentioning how young Emilia seems now, but you have to take into account that she was not very old when she froze herself and the forest. It's only been a few years since Puck found her and got her out. In terms of years conscious and living Emilia is like 14-ish, despite being over 100 years chronologically.

StrykerEvol

Luke talking about serious anime stuff. Casually mentions: "Also. I am really hungry. Just throwing that out there." Yup. Luke is definitely turning into a typical shounen anime MC, right in front of our eyes. Can't wait for him to get his dramatic and sudden power up next.

Lu C

Archie looks like Haldir? I don't know, he doesn't has that 'do-not-touch-me-peasant' air... I would say he is more like Legolas The 'brother' label is more common in asian countries for recognising a close friend. Take it more as a found family/community thing. Just a note to Emilia and her mental state - imho we didn't see/got info what is the general age of maturity of elves/half-elves, also for the other species... For me to assume that is the same as with humans (18-20), that doesn't fit. Therefore I am not very comfortable with Subaru with anyone.

Heiron

Thanks for the theories and answers guys. Good to know that we still don't have answers even from the LN.

Heiron

I like that point of view!! I would go with that too!

NoahNotes

Its live right now in the community tab. One Piece is winning with 36% and Naruto has 35%

Tommy Jensen

I like that things are split up like they are. If it's to much action, I feel it can become overwhelming. And ot would also mean one action packed episode, then multiple episode with nothing. This way, we get story and action in most episodes. So this is personally how I prefer it.

Maltheus

I can kinda get what he means, because it can get a bit annoying in certain shows (where it honestly kinda just feels like edging throughout all the ""filler"" content for 3 episodes straight just to find out what happens next in the main plot), but I almost never really feel annoyed to the extent that it takes away from most shows as a whole, especially not Re:Zero for that matter (literally every second of this anime is peak imo).

BRUNO Marques

Emilia's birth is never revealed and the author has dismissed fan speculations about her age. She is likely much older than people normally think. Her age estimation is based on Subaru making a guess, and the guy is always wrong. The author has vaguely said as much.

James Courtney

I’ll explain a little bit more here: - The second trial functions on giving you a world where your greatest wish has been granted and to pass you must part with your greatest wish that can never be granted. For most they’d want power or glory or conquest… what even took Echidna back was Emilia just wanted to be with her family and see them happy. Even Echidna got emotional over what a simple wish Emilia had, despite all her power and similarities to Satella. - Also for Emilia and the mirror and jumping into the lake… Emilia has severely internalized all the hate that she’s experienced to a point that she has been afraid to see what she looks like since she was unfrozen. Puck has been helping her dress and manage things like her hair. So seeing her reflection in the lake was actually the first time she’s really “seen” how she looks in a long time. There isn’t too much else to explain here, other than things are still building up, and I do get the intercutting is a tad annoying although part of it is really to remind everyone that all of this is happening relatively around the same time.

Stefan

Yeah, I think the Re Zero re-op,eds is a nice idea:D You're still not ready for some episodes if you got so surprised by this ending. Too bad we couldn't see the double past, now I am really curious!

L.C.

These "flashbacks" push the characters entire development. You can't even call these things flashbacks because they are literally incorporated into the main story line. Emilia cannot finish the trials without these "flashbacks" and characters cannot grow unless they have these "flashbacks". Everyone hates when flashbacks are brought up for literally no reason at all but rezero is incorporating flashbacks into the main story and they are vastly pushing a bunch of characters to develop.

L.C.

No one gives as much of a shit about the "epicness" of the mansion when it comes to this series. No one gives a shit about the hype like the usual shonen jump fans with barely functional brains. We are here for the characters and their growth and for the story line to continue and big writing developments. You are literally summing up this entire series to be whichever scenario is the most hype is automatically the best. I will tell you right away you won't like a lot of fans of shows that have this kind of writing. Not everyone in the anime community has an annoying rotted out shonen jump brain that thinks stuff is boring or drawn out when it isn't completely focused on the hype things in an anime. The entire format with how you see this anime sounds childish. Sorry but that isn't how this series works and many other well written series are the same. Same type of reason you think season 2 of made in abyss isn't as good as season 1. It shouldn't be hard to understand that season 2 is a whole lot better than season 1 because of character development and the entire story gets pushed with unique new characters and "flashbacks" of the past characters who came beforehand and are now impacting the main group in a massive way. I will never understand your little nitpicks of these things. Season 2 was leagues above season 1 of made in abyss

L.C.

I may sound rude coming off the way I did with my comment but its literally something people have been throwing at you and you still act hardheaded and continue to think in a certain direction that isn't worthwhile at all. Its so basic and childish to think you have certain issues with how a story does things because it somehow dulls or kills the hype of the main story.

Quagger

I will add, these aren't simply flashbacks. The trial does have flashbacks and simulates realities but these flashbacks and realities are vital to the characters FOR the main story. It's a culmination of details resulting in growth and resolution. Using the trial as the spear for growing the characters while it also being a requisite for continuation, I think when compared to how other stories do flashbacks, this takes supremacy. All of these moments are happening simultaneously. This isn't just a "okay cut here and put in a long winded flashback for this character in the middle of the fight." It's a "okay we've got to a small conclusion of one situation, now lets show what's happening on the other side at the current moment because it's important, and we don't wanna confuse people about the timeline."

NoBitt

15:23 DUDE! I was at that moment thinking the exact same thing. Having people try to und like beats just takes away some of the ferocity or feralness or something needed.

Pilligrim Ilyas

I'm getting what you say but saying that no one here for some epic fights at least partially is just too delusional. If no one cared about them then people would have opposite reactions and be mad about these scenes even existing. But they're not and they like fight scenes too. So when you drop the hype building on an epic fight, it's understandable that people wouldn't like it. Basically what I'm saying is that not everyone here for those things that you said only, they're here for fights too. So they have their rights to be a little upset about it. And show does attract those kind of people because if it didn't try to do that then those fights won't even happen.

Tom Boggess

the big brother is a metaphoical thing

Alexy Guerrero Ceja

Also, imagine subaru watching emilia's memories and knowing that she saw Betelgeuse as a possible father figure.

Hououin Kyouma

You are mixing Itadakimasu with Ittekimasu. Itadakimasu usually said before eating food and Ittekimasu is said before leaving which means I am leaving or I will go and come back later.
