I was so confused by the title at first. I always recall the ending of Re:Zero season 1 as beautiful and nice. But then I remembered that you're watching the director's cut which added the after-credit scene lol Edit: Oh yeah, by the way. I heavily recommend watching The Frozen Bond OVA before season 2. It is pretty essential.

Subaru gets a new checkpoint every time a plot point is resolved, here it is the white whale. Because there is no reason to show us the battle again, as he did everything correctly, the checkpoint was updated to after the battle.

While I think Re Zero is a great series, the whole first season is basically introduction to the world. And the ending is clearly showing us that it is still just the begining and nothing really started. Our "hero" basically build his relationships in this world and proved his worth... but it was all just some side-quests while the real story is not even touched. Nothing about royal selection was uncovered, nothing about his reason for being send here, nothing on why Roswaal is helping Emilia nor who actually is Emilia, nothing about the Witch of Envy except that she has nasty cult... and so on, so on. Second season finally starts to uncover some of it, but even then it still feels like barelly tip of an iceberg.

...which puts into question what are conditions for the checkpoints. He cannot control them and they are not created when "he" feels that the future is heading into good direction. But they are also not random nor created on set intervals etc. Which makes me think that Satella is somehow observing his actions and decide when to put this savepoints. Which is pretty weird the more you think about it.

The rem thing is the one thing that was added to the director's cut. the original let you have a happy ending to season 1. but the rem thing is also at the start of the first episode of season 2 so nothing was lost in the adaptation except that anime only's were spared years of a brutal cliffhanger.

Basically the gospel guides the path betelgeuse takes in life. As subaru wrote in blood in the book something along the lines of (betelgeuse will die) on the blank page, it occurs as it is the path the gospel has layed out for Betelgeuse's life. It just wasn't shown on screen what he actually wrote in the gospel which is why you were confused on the death...

Yes, the Frozen Bond is the movie. It is canon and I really recommend to watch it between seasons 1 and 2. Also, it is true that Julius is known as "the greatest knight", but in terms of overall qualities and service. Reinhard is THE strongest in all Lugunica.

I mentioned this in another reaction but that cloak with the ear things that she wears in the town, and the one Subaru wore when he announced himself into the mansion, it’s enchanted, it makes the wearer unrecognizable Also, calling someone brother or sister is a sign of closeness in Japanese culture, Puck didn’t physically birth Emilia, Betty and Puck can’t be siblings bc they r spirits… tho they are tied together somehow Ok, I’m about halfway through and they just talked about the cloak… I forgot they actually do mention it

To one of your many questions: The edge of Petelgeuse's robe was caught in the wagon wheel and dragged the rest of his body in. As big of a monster he seemed at the end, Geuse was still only his very damaged body. It is why he flew so far when Subaru punched him. The unseen hands have no mass, only force. So if Geuse had immediately destroyed the wagon wheel, he would have been fine but since he was so furious over the book and at Subaru, he was dragged in before he knew it. Finally. On "Frozen Bonds." It is a full canon story and not filler at all. It is story set in critical point of some characters and really worth watching for that reason. I am going to go against the grain some and recommend your watch it after season 2. It will both enhance your viewing of season 2 but it will also spoil a few things. It lets the full extent of (something spoilery) be known so it is not as shocking when it happens in season 2. On the other hand, when (something else spoilery) happens part way through the season, it makes more sense if you watch 'Frozen Bonds.' I watched it after season 2 and it was amazing as it answered a number of questions I had and gave some details I wanted but it becomes prequel as you don't feel any peril for the characters involved and watch it learn the earlier days of XXXXXX and XXXXXX. So at the end of Season two, when you are asking, 'but how did Character X get to position Y, 'Frozen Bonds' gives you that answer. Outside of that. 'Frozen Bonds' is about 20 minutes too long and not as well paced as it could be so it really works out as something fans of the series will enjoy for the extra context.

Regarding the 'save point' updating despite him not even making it as far along in time as the previous attempts, I haven't read the LN or anything so I'm just speculating, but my guess is the witch is controlling when the save points occur. If she has a vested interest in Emilia surviving or becoming queen or whatever, then every time Subaru accomplishes something that gets rid of a major threat to that, she'd update the save point. So it's not a matter of a set amount of time between them, but what he accomplishes. The scary thing about that is, the witch's priorities and Subaru's probably don't all line up, so he may think he can retry something only to learn it's been changed because he did what she wanted.

What a way to end the first season!! I want to add a few things you might have missed throughout the season, they are not spoilers, just some extra pieces of information. First of all, it all but confirmed that Satella summoned Subaru to this world. The proof is his ability to Return by Death and the fact that every time he does return the witch's scent grows. As for the White Whale's ability to erase people, it was explained that only when they are hit by the Whale's fog people are erased, not when the Whale kills them. The previous Sword Saint Theresia died from the White Whale but she wasn't erased from people's memories because she wasn't hit by the fog, that's why people still remember her. Last, the White Whale wasn't a Sin Archbishop like Betelgeuse, it was a mabeast like the dogs but way more powerful. The reason Puck called it gluttony was because of its ability to "devour" people's existence but a Sin Archbishop is someone who must have the authority of a sin like Betelgeuse had the sloth's authority.

My personal thoughts ending this episode is, If it doesnt make a save pointy for him randomly, or if he doesnt control it in some way, (which of i have no clue). Then there must be a motivation behind those checkpoints, something that has to happen for it to activate. And if HE doesnt have controll, then the person (the witch?) maybe has motivations beyond his own. The checkpoint wont move if he doesnt fulfill what the one controlling the power wants, more than what he wants. Maybe thats why it was so sudden with his new checkpoint. And that may elude to every new checkpoint meaning he has done something favourable to whoever keeps bringing him back. But thats just my thoughts

the checkpoint are not mark by time, but seems to go by certain events/acomplishhments, so even if you go past 1-2 weeks and reset but this time complete something at the 3 days mark it is saved there, even if someone dies in the procces

Yes, I would actually say the scene was removed from original S1 rather the other way around. Because this scene is the real final scene of arc 3 and is the last chapter of volume 9. They chose to skip it in the original S1 because they didn't know if Re:Zero will get an S2.

Julius isn't really stronger than Reinhart, so I think Subaru is just complimenting him. It may be moreso that even though Reinhart is stronger, Julius is more "knightly" as shown by his willingness to tarnish his own reputation to save Subaru with the duel and how he is one of the only people that treats even Emilia with absolute respect.

after season 2 you can also watch the IF stories from echidnut (one of them is the Rem happy ending if that peaks your interest :D) they are created by the author as a way to show some alternative ways the story could go if subaru chose not to do certain things. they are amazingly told btw so def recommend. like minded people please like or comment :D

I think the season 3 is where the royal selection starts to take place, and from what I've heard it will probably be 2 cours with at least 40 episodes which I've found is really crazy, but I won't complain if they drop us a lot episodes with a lot of stuff covered. I also have heard that it cover arc 5 and 6 (I don't know how much of arc 6 they will cover). Also I'm anime-only so it is only what I've heard of some spoiler-free comments on Internet, so it is not some verified information.

Anyone know what Subaru wrote in the Gospel to finish off Betelgeuse? I mean the exact script. The only thing I can find online is that he wrote 終わり (owari) which means the "end of one's life" - and Subaru does actually say this. But what he writes in the Gospel looks nothing like that. I uploaded, to ChatGPT, a screenshot showing Subaru holding out the book after he had written in it. ChatGPT said... "The Japanese writing in the book that you've shown from the anime "Re: Zero" is "終わり," which translates to "The End" in English. This is what Subaru writes in the gospel to defeat Betelgeuse." But ChatGPT did a Bing search before coming back with the answer, so I think it probably just read the same online comments as me, rather than directly translating the picture.

Clearly this show is much better than I used remember, though it was very good, but damn now I think is too good. I know it was hard to do 1h episode, but this feels more rewarding. Man this was the best reaction so far and probably this is why I like more now than when I saw it first time (~5y ago) with normal 24 min episodes. They're stories written by the author that show what would have happened if Subaru did something differently, for example, what if he never jumped off the cliff in episode 7, or what if Rem agreed to run away with him. There is currently no anime adaptation for any of these stories, but you can read fan translated versions of them online for free. They're called IF stories and each one is named after a sin (the Rem one is called Sloth IF, for example). All have been fully translated with exception of Lust IF, however, Lust if was an April fools joke and should just be ignored. They're mostly spoiler free and are fine to read as an anime only, with the exception of Gluttony, which has massive season 3 spoilers.

To answer one of your questions, and it's not a spoiler, just a small detail. "Who wrote the letter?" Rem wrote the letter that Subaru asked her to write because he's not proficient at writing yet. The reason it's blank...well, Rem is already "gone" by then. It's an interesting point that I didn't get until I read the books, it's not obvious at all. On watch back, knowing that, it's clear what went wrong. I don't think they mention it at all in the anime, so it's just a neat little thing.

Betty being a spirit is not a spoiler. She's referred to as not human when we first meet her, and I'm 99% sure she's referred to as a spirit in season 1

Luke, the fact that Ram, Wilhelm and Petra recognized Subaru while wearing the robes was not a plot hole. The anime didn't explain it, but the wearer can "allow" someone to recognize him even with the robes on. If someone is strong enough, they can get past the enchantment, but Emilia wasn't, that's why she didn't recognize him.

I just need to say, styx helix and stay alive, the two endings, literally kept me alive for a good while alongside two other songs. Re Zero, especially season 2 now that I look back on it, helped me a lot mentally, even if I didn't really feel it at the time. Watching this anime, and honestly discovering anime as a whole, right when I was at my lowest point was kind of a blessing. I'm really excited to see you react to season 2, rewatching this show with you has been a blast so far.

Makes sense. I was wondering where Rem was at the campfire circle/strategy meeting. I just assumed she went off somewhere to do another task or get healed. I was like it's not like her to not show up to such an important meeting. I'm more interested in what subaru wrote in the book. Did it say that he can return by death???? Was he betting on what happened to Emilia aka dying suddenly to happen to betelgeuse too?

The scene in question can easily be a counterpoint to the "there's no stakes in this anime !". Yes, Subaru dies, it's painfull and he may loose all his progress each time, but in a way, in the end he will succeed... Well this scene is litterally "Or will he ?" I liked season 1 as well, but not as much as all people seemed to like it at the time. But the director's cut was a WAY better watch for me, they solved many things, and this last scene was powerfull. I hated it and loved it with a passion at the same time. Season 2 tho ? Oh boy I absolutly loved it. And it may have to do with some points we talked about.

I think you’re severely underestimating the witch, Puck says if Romani wants to fight him he would have to have half the ability of the witch to summon hands and we don’t even know what else she can do, and Puck can destroy the world, so she is just that strong. Why would she care about being in charge of one country she could be in charge of all countries.

So, no spoilers here at all, but just to clear a few things up: 1. Subaru basically wrote "the end" in the Gospel, and since the cult lives based on what the book tells them, it essentially meant Bettelgeuse's life was over. Not going to elaborate more on that, just know that it's why Subaru beat him. 2. Rem wrote the letter. It's never explained in the anime directly, but you can put it together with the info given to you here. Subaru can't really write yet so he asked her to write a letter to explain the situation. We can assume that Rem was erased from existence after the letter was sent, since the person who wrote it stopped existing, but the paper didn't disappear. 3. The cloak that Subaru wears basically makes it so he can't be recognized. The wearer can tell people that it's them, though. You can assume that Subaru told the kids and Rem/Wilhelm that it was him. 4. Not sure why so many people are saying they had to wait 4 years through this cliffhanger. No, they didn't. If they're anime-only the first season ended with the credits after the scene with Subaru on Emilia's lap. The post-credits was added in the directors cut, which came out like 6 months before season 2. It was technically part of the same volume in the light novel, but they cut it out on the first season because they didn't know if a second season was going to happen (as is the case with most anime). 5. You'll probably want to watch the OVA. If you don't watch it before S2 you'll be fine, you'll just be missing a little bit of context but the way S2 is written, it honestly works out fine if you watch if afterwards. I still recommend watching it before, though. 6. I HIGHLY recommend you don't skip the intros so readily in S2. I know it's copyright issues and you don't want to get spoiled, but first, you can edit that out for youtube, and second, the opening only shows up a handful of times in S2 and by the time it does it won't really spoil anything. Get ready for like full 30 min episodes in this season with no op or ed.

Hehehe this makes me giggle a bit. Though on the regular version of season 1, we did not get that ending that we got on the Director's Cut. In the regular version, where the tilte popped up before the credits, that's when the season ended. The extra minutes we got on the end here on the Director's Cut is how season 2 begins. That itself will be for you to explore later. Also, before continuing to season 2. I do say that watching the OVA/Movie, The Frozen Bond is important to the story. So I recommend watching it before jumping into season 2. Can't wait for your reaction for season 2 😄😄😅

But... we didn't. Not really. That final scene was added into the Director's Cut not too long before the beginning of season 2. The original cut of season 1 had a pretty solid ending that would've been satisfying even if the show was never continued. In a sense, the Director's Cut was released specifically to freak us all out with that extra scene at the end and build up hype for season 2 and only *then* did we suddenly feel like we were trapped playing the waiting game.

I would say Frozen Bond should be next. So to confirm, yes Rem did write the letter, but because of something that happened, Rem was erased, and what was written on the letter was also erased so they were sent a blank letter. Also this happened around his last checkpoint hence why the Blank Letter is an issue they had to handle right after Subaru started dealing with the Witch’s Cult. I’m noting this here as it’s not actually clearly stated in the anime, but was confirmed in the LN. Now to also note, this was not in the ending of Season 1 but only the directors cut, which was supposed to lead right into Season 2 (although Season 2 did get delayed so we didn’t get to learn what happened for a few months.)

Now that we've gotten to this point, I am going to share a story with you, Luke. I. Absolutely. Hate. That. Meme! And it's not because of the anime. When season 1 of the anime originally aired, that post-credit scene wasn't in it; they added it to the uncut version later on. Nah, see, what happened was that I was reading the light novels at about the same time I was watching the show. Imagine my surprise when I got two-thirds of the way through book 9 and realized I'd gotten to the happy ending from season 1 and yet the book wasn't over yet. Then I got that cute little scene with Subaru, Petra and Emilia in the carriage and, just like you, I sensed what was coming. It wasn't all that subtle about it. But bloody hell, no amount of foreboding could prepare me for turning the page and seeing nothing but "Who's Rem?" on the next page. Literally, those were the only two words on the entire page. And I actually screamed and threw the book down on my bed and yelled that if it were possible to be traumatized just from reading a book, that would be what did it for me. It's not funny! It's not funny at all! Gahhhhhh!!! Anyway, a minor note before I post the comment. They skipped it in the anime, but Rem actually tricked Subaru into promising to ask Emilia for permission for her to be Subaru's second wife. Subaru thought Rem was dying from her injuries after the White Whale fight and basically said whatever Rem asked him to if only she would please not die on him. And then she was all, "Haha, gotcha! Do you see Ferris panicking and trying to heal me? Nope! I'm going to be fine. But you promised! No backing out now." That's why Subaru starts talking to Emilia about it in the carriage in that last scene.

Not sure if you'll see this comment. But the hood Subaru wears has some kind of perception magic (if I remember correctly) preventing people from recognizing who you are when wearing it. I think it was in the books but the explanation didn't make it into the anime for some reason.

It does get explained in the anime. I believe Felix discusses it with Subaru in the village after Subaru uses it the first time. So, since that is after the audience has already seen Emilia wearing it several times in the season before that point, it puts those scenes in a new context in retrospect rather than in advance.

I was in a situation where my partner of 6 years fell in love with someone else, and while they were open and honest about it instead of just cheating, those same feelings you describe came up.
