been eagerly awaiting this for days

Burezu

don't know the time of Heiter's death off the top of my head, but everytime a new "chapter" starts it says the time after Himmel passed so you can always calculate.

Kaning Guliko

I loveee your reaction 💕💕 thank you Luke

Devin Harrington

If you want a unique anime, I still say you should try To Your Eternity eventually - I can't say I've ever seen another anime like it honestly. This one might be the closest if anything.

Jacob Winslow

Between heiters death and the next scene it was about 2 years

charlymoon

when we get first introduced to Fern it says "20 years after the hero's death", we know that Frieren stays with her for about 5 years so when it says "26 years after the Hero's death" it would be only 1 year after Heiter's death

K. Vincent

Himmel makes me teary eyes every single time he shows up...

Muligan Shinzuo

Remember that ppl called 86 an mid-anime. Who knew that the drunk priest could be such a good father, shows you again that ppl can change.

GTB

Watching Frieren is anything but a waste of time. This anime is a marvel of writing and artistic performance. The production value is insane. A lot of attention to detail and animation quality. And even though it's mostly a philosophical wanderer, Frieren doesn't forget to be very epic and impressive. We'll also see how this heroic-fantasy world has nothing in common with modern Isekais fantasy worlds. Since you mention Violet Evergarden, fun fact: Frieren's composer is Violet's composer, Evan Call. This autumn season is definitely full of high-quality anime. (The Apothecary Diaries and Urasawa's Pluto start this week).

Some0neElse

21:26 Frieren every episode "Help me step brother, im stuck!"

Joku Jussi

That ending just hits you so hard when the episode ends. Ugh.

Adam Juríček

Himmel is kinda like jesus in this anime :D 14:30 it's been about 1 to 2 years since the priests death maybe less. bc she found them in year 20 and stayed for 4 years and something.

Billy Dowd

I don't remember if it says when the priest died but she started teaching Fern 20 years after Himmel died, that's the only thing I've been keeping track of.

Anonymous

Frieren came to Heiter and met Fern 20 years after the death of Himmel, so this is 6 years after that

Horus

You should watch "A Place further than the Universe".

ZckFox

Most of the people that complain Frieren is mid or that it is boring tend to be those that only watch shonen action anime and are unwilling to give more serious or dramatic anime a chance.

KeanuofRivia

This is like my 6th re watch of the first four episodes and I've only just put together why she poured out two bottles onto his grave. Because Himmel isn't alive to pour one out too 😭😭😭. She's pouring a second one out in His place

KeanuofRivia

If this gets an Abridged that's totally going to be the basis of her character lol

KeanuofRivia

Also I'm pretty sure Heiter was in his 90s. I actually have a running theory that the Shadow Horn she left with Himmel that was constantly exuding an evil aura was actually the reason he aged to fast compared to Heiter.

Emilis2023

Really glad to see you continuing on with this. It's probably been my favorite anime this season I'm currently watching so far anyway. Bit of a toss up maybe between it and 100 Girlfriends, but obviously the two shows are such polar opposites that I'd have a hard time comparing them.

dpolaristar

Squirrels technically ARE Vermin that isn't an insult just an observation they are a type of rodent.

inuani10

That plus he was a swordsman and was constantly straining his body vs the rearguard style of a priest.

inuani10

I don't think it ever really states Heiter and Himmels ages but they are around the same age and if they started their journey at like 16 then Heiter would have been around 100 at his passing. Frieren meet up with Heiter and Fern after 20 years of Himmels death and trained Fern for 4-5 years so only like a year-ish passed.

Emilis2023

Help me step-warrior

GrumpyOldAndy

Frieren could have found the flower a lot faster, but to her time doesn't matter at all, so she's happy to take years on something that could take hours. It's only Fern who gives her a sense of mortality and time passing.

Idkwutoput

Eva Call is the composer who made the ost for this anime. The same guy that made the ost for Violet Evergarden.

Russell Gambardella

Glad you're enjoying Frieren, we are most definitely enjoying your reactions!

FaerieRose

Some people call anything that isn’t battle shounen or isekai “mid.” It’s their loss.

Sai

3:39 - Hah, Luke didn't notice Heiter yeeting his veggies onto Frieren's plate. I thought that part was funny.

CaptainVanisher

It mentions that heiter was older than himmel. Like5-10 years. He must be around 90-100 in his death. Himmel around 70-80.

Bluestar

Its funny how every reaction I've seen for this episode has people being confused by the Himmel-based date and asking for it relative to Heiter's death instead. Like, it almost as if everything is centered around Himmel in this show or something. And everyone has an outburst about the mystery seeds being the blue moon weed. They all say it doesn't make sense but can't fathom another possibility.

CaptainVanisher

Frieren is my 2nd favourite manga. The anime is adapted insanely well. Btw there is a cool detail. The characters' names are German words that match their character and personality. Frieren : Freeze Heiter : Cheerful Himmel : Paradise Eisen : Iron Fern : Distant Stark : Strong

Cédric Michaud

No it is because Heiter was drinking and it kept him healthy compared all the other elder in this show...

Kosumi

People know they like certain things and want more of that thing, nothing really wrong with that. However, giving your opinion that something outside of your wheelhouse is "a waste of time" or "mid" is a pretty mid take if I do say so myself. BTW to answer your question about how much time has passed since Heiter dies, we aren't really told exact dates. However, in the manga it mentions that Frieren met Fern 20 years after Himmel's death, and it was mentioned in both the manga and anime that Frieren had been teaching Fern for four years by the time Heiter collapsed. with those timelines it's most likely that Heiter most likely died around 1.5 years to a few weeks before we catch up with Frieren and Fern in the pumpkin patch

FullHeart

Yeah she has no specific goal, and she's not the kind of person to go around being like "I need to help people as much as possible" which would give her a need to be faster. She is *quite* powerful and could do a lot of things faster if she actually wanted to, but from her perspective why does it matter if she finds this flower now or in a few years - Either way she's training Fern and it's the same difference.

Ultraporing

This anime always summons the onion ninjas, it's not fair :*( And ppl saying it's mid see Kosumi's comment it sums my views up perfectly.

Shadowflex

Himmel tried so hard to get Frieren notice his love for her. Bro got friend zoned till death lol

Anonymous

Someone's probably already said it but the flower part of the episode is 2 years after Heiter died

KeanuofRivia

I'm sorry did u just say "Heiters constant drinking kept him HEALTHY?!" That doesn't make sense

GTB

Indeed. But you mean Nekketsu to be precise ;). Like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Naruto, BD, MHA, One Piece etc..Shonen is not a genre but an editorial target. Frieren IS a shonen. But also Spy Family, The Promised Neverland, Dr Stone, Komi Can't Communicate, Takagi-san, SNK (which began publishing as a shonen) etc...

"I don't know how anyone can think squirrels are vermin" You've clearly never had squirrels live inside your walls. Being adorable doesn't stop them from being vermin.

SilverDragon

Maybe he used holy magic to keep his liver going and deal with hangovers? I think that'd be a funny explanation to his old age, just constantly casting magic on himself so his body can deal with his drinking. Oddly enough, it would explain his sudden collapse (although his age alone would explain it too). Since he stopped drinking he would've stopped casting magic on his body and it eventually caught up with him.

Mariokempes

You gotta react to Undead Unluck Opening. Best opening in this seaon in my opinion. Anime is also great, a lot of fun. So far it has 3 episodes but I love it already <3

FinalMasterM

"Mid anime" I'm gonna say something controversial in the anime community. I've been watching anime for a very long time, my love for it sparked when I was 13 (currently 40) and I have a hard time considering any anime "mid" or even bad. They all have their own stories, worlds, characters and more to explore. Frieren is in no way "mid" because it's slow or safe.

KeanuofRivia

I also wondered if Himmel was actually older to begin with and was one of those people that just looks young for a long time then all of it catches up to him fast

Eliana

Millet: Are you alright? Me: *sobs uncontrollably*

Alderanex

„They“ also say Evangelion is slow paced and hate it for that. In Frieren at this point 26(!!!) years have passed, not to spoil too much but it will actually get a little bit slower in this regard in the next episodes. As for your anime journey I think the balance is key. Watching series that are airing right now along with your viewers is fun, for us too. But to catch up on some beloved and influential, watershed like, anime is just as important as that helps to appreciate today’s shows even more. Same as for live action movies and shows. Know the history. I am watching 14 current anime this season, a handful spilled over from summer, like JJK, Eminence in Shadow, and seven older ones . From this season I would recommend to earmark The Apothecary Diaries which is “slow” as Frieren in a completely different setting and a very charming MC. And Shanghri-la Frontier maybe because you play Genshin Impact or as a lead into Sword Art Online (maybe your brother knows it?) Classic anime like Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, changed how stories are told, the Big Three Bleach-Naruto-One Piece or JoJo are quoted and copied conceptually left and right and then there is Gintama, I watch anime for forty years now, with big breaks in between, the pandemic helped catch up some but there is still so much out there, for example I would love your reactions to Odd Taxi, Bunny Girl Senpai or Accel World (Same series universe as SAO) that I might never get.

L.C.

So the subtitles said "and you alright" which confused me. It is supposed to be "are you alright" isn't it? I swear subtitles can be so annoying sometimes.

Overlord_Ashalon

Squirrels have burrowed into my roof and have been eating holes into the house itself no they are vermin.

Cronosoul

As you enter more and more into the anime community, you'll learn there's a group of people who essentially only ever watch Shounen anime and nothing else, and label anything that isn't Shounen 'mid'. Shounen is fine and all, but there's SO many people who just do not venture outside of the genre and miss out on gems such as this. Anything remotely Slice-of-life gets the same treatment from that crowd, unfortunately.

Jacob Winslow

I’m pretty sure that shadow dragon horn he kept in his closet had something to do with it

Shane Bishop

If you like anime that have these vignettes of adventures and stunning settings, you should check out Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World. It doesn't quite hit the consistent sentimental states that this show has, but each episode is an experience of its own that you can appreciate individually

Ryan Thomas

You mentioned in the opening reaction video you did of Frieren you were curious about the actual lyrics of the frieren opening to know if it was happy or sad, If your still curious and your watching on Crunchyroll the opening has the english subs so you know the actual lyrics in case you wanted to watch it in 1 of the episodes as I will say its a very special opening especially with the lyrics and there are no spoilers for the anime in it even with the translated lyrics.

Muyo373

Calling for more Friren episodes, hope for up-to-date.

Noctislolig

Let's be real. The word "Mid" in the anime community only means "Well, I don't like it so I gotta' act like my opinion is somehow founded in truth instead of just subjectivity".

Noctislolig

@L.C. I think it's probably meant to be "and you alright". It's not the only grammatical error in the song's lyrics. That's just something that happens a lot when japanese artists use other languages in their songs.

Pascal Schulla

at 9:33 another German word Ewig=Forever

rostikowb

The way Luke held on throughout the episode and then heard the ED makes me laugh a lot

rostikowb

Oh, this is about my friend, for him there are two kinds of anime, shonen and bad anime :/

Visoth

Frierens got a gloryhole fetish

Nathan Means

Squirrels tried to eat the bumper off of my truck. Left a huge gash of teeth mark in the crease you could completely see through.

Tom Boggess

they say a person dies three times. the first one is when your physical body dies, the second happens when all those who knew you die. And the final one occurs when someone says your name for the very last time.
