I will just mention that just because Von Hohenheim was the guy who started up Alchehestry, doesnt mean he knows all the stuff that the people of shing do. This is like science, so they have developed upon what they were taught. Now he definitely knows more than anyone except father about how Alchemy/Alchehestry works, as he clearly spent time reading up on the fields. The brothers started off learning by reading the massive Alchemy library that Hohenheim left behind, but it is more than likely that he has gaps in his knowledge of Alchemy and Alchehestry that new masters of the field have learned.

feels like to me that Van was looking for just about any ''sin'' that could deliver the message for father and he just happen to find the best one :D

I believe Von Hohenheim was looking for evidence of the circle, finding a homunculus was mere chance

I think the footprints could simply be explained by wind direction. The wind could simply have blown the other way during the storm, so it didn't cover the inner most footprints. The snow that was already there could have been built up over time.
