The first isekai, which Re;Zero took inspiration from (afaik). Also do not skip the openings, watch them muted (for us, since there are multiple songs IIRC) if you have to, they are different every episode and show the journey. Especially important to not skip them since you loved that in the Made in Abyss.

this is one of my favourite pieces of fiction, and my favourite isekai (i have watched a lot) it will maybe be hard to watch some of the scenes in this shows, but after watching no game no life i think you can handle it lol.

Well I don't know for sure, I'm gonna check it out with the reactions. But off the bat it's been labelled as a 'controversial anime' including a commenter saying it's an understatement and some other general comments warning about future scenes, it does kind of give the impression it's been sold on it's controversial scenes and not that it has a good story irrespective of that.

Don’t worry the world will open up if given the time hopefully that’s not a spoiler tho I guess that can be said with any anime if you give the show time it will open up to you I know sometimes the first episode doesn’t really show much of the possibilities it would have sometimes shows just want to ease you into the show before anything crazy

Generally not reccomended to be watched early in an anime enjoyer's journey as the mature (and immature) themes can be a turn off from the isekai/fantasy genre. There are definitely quite a few lewd/uncomfortable scenes, but so long as you can tolerate them, it makes the character growth and world building shine even brighter. They all feel more grounded as people just trying to live their life and making mistakes along the way (even when completely avoidable).

Yeah some people drop this anime because of the main character, he is a fucking weirdo, but he is really trying to progress, be better and finally live. But anything more than this might be a spoiler, but yeah it is normal to hate him, but also kinda feel sorry for him. (Without getting into more details or thoughts)

About the sus parts of this anime, it gets worse than what it is right now, with a handful of scenes in the first season that are extremely off-putting and really uncomfortable to watch. No, as in the grand father of isekai the first big one (Light Novels are old at this point). It really paved the way for isekai genre, Re;Zero might not be a thing without Mushoku Tensei (I might be wrong, but I have heard many times about it being inspiration for re;zero). So it is fun to see him get to the roots of isekai, after seeing many of the newer ones. Mushoku Tensei also has aged well, it didn't get left behind by the newer ones trying to improve the genre (I think this is my favorite Isekai).

Well I've watched the first episode. It certainly has promise that intrigues me but at this point in the show, I think the horniness of the MC and parents was laid on a bit too thick. Would've been better a little toned down imo.

Ok - I admit it, my pitchfork was sharpened and my torch was on fire. So glad you realized the error and corrected it - but be careful, we're watching you ! :-) BTW - there's no real need to censor the nude scenes of Rudy. There are a few but none of them are obscene or gratuitous. They are just part of the story. I can't recall any other nude scenes in the anime. It's certainly less risky than Konosuba - and you watched that on twitch.

@dragonguard666 - the 'horniness' has a point. It's an important part of the initial story. The MC is that way for reasons that will become apparent. The parents are just a normal healthy young couple. They are a bit loud, but I guess the houses in this world have thin walls and the people are not overly prudish.

It's not so much the scenes (nothing much is really shown), but the concepts that some have difficulty with. This show does not seek to titillate with fan service; (nearly) all such scenes have a purpose in the story and in the MC's redemption arc.

It's not the first Isekai, it's called the grandfather of isekai because it was the first one to draw so many people to shousetsuka ni narou, (a site where people publish web novels) both readers and new writers, like we're talking an insane amount of people, it also popularised a lot of the tropes we see in modern isekai and various other anime genres, but most of them fail when using them because they don't have the context surrounding them. I wish people didn't just throw the title around without the rest of the explanation ...

@dragonguard666 - The world in this isekai isn't 'our' world and it doesn't follow the 'normal' conventions of contemporary western societies. Having said that, it was not (and in some places it is still not) uncommon for children to be fully aware that their parents have sex regularly. You can't raise a large family in one or two rooms without the 'banging' being noticed by everyone. Surely every story you come across doesn't have to reflect your morals and your society's taboos? No one is demanding that you change your morals or adopt the norms of the story. There are characters in this story that I despise and actions I abhor, but that didn't stop me appreciating it.

Re Zero and No game no life both came out before this one, same year though. There were plenty of isekais before this too. All 3 came out the same year that the SAO anime popularized isekais.

@keith merrington it is a lot worst when you know the context from the LN about how mc’s an actual pedo prior to isekai. When i learned what he did in LN as s1 was airing i was disgusted and quit the show for abit, then was glad at least the anime just didn’t mention it at all and got back to watching after some weeks. It is a great story of climbing out of the darkest pits to become a better person. Not hating on it, just saying, the mc is a lot worst than depicted in anime

Dang you Luke! I don't like paying any monthly fees no matter how low, but you got me here with Made in Abyss and now it looks like I'll be here for several more months for Mushoku Tensei! Looking forward for the series reaction. I really don't care for most Isekai series, but this is by far my favorite I've seen (and ReZero is my second favorite so looking forward to that as well). Hopefully you can get past Rudy being a despicable character at first. He does some things that churn my stomach, but he grows a lot over the course of the series and I think it's a wonderful story.

I'd love him to watch the openings/endings and do a little recap of what happened in previous episodes, or speculations about what's about to come. Anyone who calls this the grandfather of isekai is just flat out wrong. Zero No Tsukaima came out way before this was even thought of. Mushoku Tensei novel came out in 2012, Overlord came out far earlier 2010, hell even Digimon is an Isekai. Fail anime trivia. I mean geez. People just believe anything.... They want to act like this is a masterpiece light novel that fathered all isekai, it isn't and it's not.

In this case 90% of what ppl call reincarnation is wrong because transmigration is way more popular in isekai like for example in re zero or overlord. but ppl call all of that isekai anyway. like i said it's not called grandfather because it was 1st to do anything but for its influence and being most popular isekai WN for years on Shosetsuka ni Narou, even today years after it's finished it's in top 3

It's not an argument. It's a statement of fact, there are different genres of isekai, again read my post. Anyone who calls Mushoku tensei the grandfather of Isekai is wrong. Your second point has no bearing on myself. Isekai as a genre is the transporting from one world to another. Tensei isekai is just a sub genre, specifically reincarnating into another world, like Shoujo Isekai, aka Girl is the main character that's transported to another world, Jikan Isekai, transported to another time, Reverse isekai, from ancient world to modern world, and Harem Isekai..

Monogatari, Evil openings, true. Now that you mentioned it, you missed a lot of them in your first reactions, I really liked some of the Bakemonogatari openings (the only one Monogatari I have already watched but I will watch the rest of the serie one day), and you should have a part 2 of this with the ones you missed (with someone recommending them because I don't know which ones of them precisely).

This one is one where cheeky is somewhat realist (having real characterization and worldbuilding purposes) and not much for comedy purposes. You'll see farther down the line in season 1 and the beginning of season 2 more and more what I mean. Fantasy is about to get real. You mentioned Skyrim (and the whole Elder Scrolls series), and to my opinion you could compare both world, because both has amazing worldbuilding with "real" political and social issues.

This is one of the few animes which I would call drama fantasy. It's pretty serious, especially for the isekai genre since it's saturated with light-hearted power fantasies. Mushoku Tensei's characters are pretty grounded in reality, especially with their flaws and I think that's really an underappreciated thing in most fantasy anime. The character development is amazing, the world is interesting. The only thing that I observed people hate is the MC's erm... perversion towards people of all age.

Thank you correction @nikum, I have misinterpreted what I have seen talk about this show (which is why I added that I am not 100% certain). Seems like it is more nuanced topic and not just cut and dry "it is the first one" or even first popular one.

Keep in mind these very last words of Rudeus, they're extremely important. That's what the show is all about: a very problematic man who's had a shitty life, who gets a second chance in a new world and wants to become a better person, to have a better life. You don't change easily, you don't change in 2 days. I'll say it again so there's no confusion or misunderstanding. This is NOT a fantasy action-adventure shonen with crappy fan-service; it's an extremely well-written, long, seinen focused on these characters, their imperfections, their evolution and dealing with very serious/relevant subjects ...and which takes place in a fantasy world (based on our ancient times) and can sometimes be very spectacular and intense. By far the best isekai I've seen so far. ps: just so you know, the story is finished. The 24-ep season 1 adapts the first 6 volumes of the 26-volume Light Novel. As I said, it's a very long adventure.

I’m in total agreement. But, IMO, he has such a long list of anime’s to watch. At least the twitch watch along gives a show a better opportunity to be viewed sooner than later. 86 had been knocked out early for so long. I’m just glad it finally won.

They are mostly either abstract or very generic, only a small percentage has spoilers and thos can be quickly pointed out when starting a series. but yeah thats exactly what i meant, always seeing the characters would help him remember who is who and where, i think.

At this point it's impossible to tell whether he's trolling or not with the pronunciations. Ever since the epic of the Shin-gashima it's just basically an even mix of both. All we can do is accept the world of "Izzy-Kye" and hope to god he doesn't do anything else to "Mu-shuko" other than cross those two syllables. lol

I really hope you stick with the show, Rudeus is super sus in the beginning but the show is about him bettering himself as a person. He's got one of the best character development arcs I've seen in a while.
