I really love how everything in the story fits so well on hindsight. Those who've watched it will know how many details have passed by their minds just from this episode

AttackRunRepeat

By the end of this anime you shouldn't have any questions. Arakawa writes this story in such a way that every question a person could have is answered.

Morgan Hellström

You will find out your answeres at the same pace as the brothers do

Jacob

its funny how Luke keeps referring to older anime as lighthearted and fun, the oldest anime i've watched is the '79 Gundam series and that's all about the horrors of war and the effect it has on children forced to fight. older anime is generally way darker than modern anime.

Frentzy

I think it's bias, he watched cartoon as a kid and most cartoons are way more lighthearted and fun. When something old pop up his nostalgia activate and a correlation between old cartoons and the anime watches happens.

Stuff like jujutsu kaisen or chainsaw man are dark, but it doesn’t hit as hard because you know going in it’s going to be that way. FMAB from the outside doesn’t appear that way, and that’s by design. Episode 4 is a harsh slap of reality, and from here expect a very strong mix of dark themes, light hearted fun, heavy action and so much more. Pay attention though, you’ll need to, to find the Truth.

"Fast paced" - You have no idea. You havent even dipped your toes in the pond.

The original Fullmetal Alchemist was even darker. It drops the comedic moments and focuses solely on the dark elements of the series. However it has a different end the show since it wrapped up before the manga was finished and made up their own ending.

Regarding the alchemists in Ishval, they showed them marching in and there were faces you've seen before - the prisoner from the first episode who said he killed people because he could, the alchemist you saw fight Scar by creating all the cannons, and in the front was Col. Mustang... And yes, there are alchemists around that can snap their fingers and make massive explosions - that was Mustang - there's a reason he's known as the Flame Alchemist. The power level of alchemists can't really be understated... when Mustang talked about them being sent in as living weapons, he meant it - alchemists can be living weapons of mass destruction, as the Freezing Alchemist displayed in the first episode when he affected massive areas of Central, the capitol city, with the intention of taking out the entire command structure.

Light harted older anime hmmm... Ranma 1/2? Or you can watch anime for kids that many were japanese-german coproductios like Maya the Bee, Vicky the Viking (German opening is still good), Alice in Wonderland... You aren't referring to 80/90s cartoons? like Teenage mutant ninja turtles, X-Men, Batman... Tell us Luke, what are you referencing...

Jessimi G

You'll get answers to a lot of your questions in future episodes. Also, if you think the scene with Nina was dark here... the original anime hits even harder. If you decide to watch it (I do recommend it) be ready to ugly cry.

wildhunt1973

There aren't really too many light-hearted anime, unless you go for something like Date a Live...oh, wait, kinda dark. Akiba Maid War...oh, wait...dark. Dragon Ball...yeah, that's kinda light but it can get dark. I'm starting my journey through Mazinger Z right now (shock of all shock, but I'm actually watching the subbed) and I thought it was going to be light, but it's dark, too. I think to get light, you have to watch stuff that's mostly PG or below.

Tom Boggess

"are there any alchemists with that level of strength?" Colonel Mustang is that very same guy. He IS the one who can snapped his fingers and blew up a city.

It’s not THAT old of an anime. Pre-2000’s would be old, or maybe beginning 00’s. For an undark anime…maybe some rom-coms? Not all, many of those have dark elements as well.

Nioavellir

As spoiler free as possible: There is no alchemy only one person is "capable" of doing, there is Alchemy only one person knows how to do.

donald cuck

the anime is not that old but the animation style looks old, its like, 1080p mixed with og animation style

Lu C

Aah yeah, that one of the shows I didn't watch till now and probably never will 😁

gmantsang

there is General alchemy that most people know and there's alchemy that people have specialized in, basically if ed really wanted to he could learn flame alchemy.

Arctic

Yeah I personally call the 2000s-2020s the golden age of modern anime, The stuff older than that also excellent and a style that lots of people prefer over some of the newer anime. Keep in mind tho that anime is drawn in different styles and techniques so some newer shows look "older" like Mushoku Tensei

This anime swings wildly from comedy to horror, especially in the early part that they are speed running a little in the retelling of (compared to the original series). I know it feels jarring, but what I can say is this: Look at real life. There is nothing like narrative structure that prevents a happy moment in real life from turning tragic on a dime. Or from someone in despair from suddenly laughing at the ridiculousness of their situation. Gallows humor, bittersweet memories, senseless coincidence, it's just... normal. We only see how jarring it can be when looking at it from the outside. From the inside, it's just how life goes.

Louispul5

Stop calling it old! You're making us old! Old anime you'd want Outlaw Star, or Trigun, or the original Gundam. Back in the good old "feral catgirl" days of anime.

Andrew Lindsey

If you want a movie that’s dark check out grave of the fireflies. I know of a few that’s as dark but not many. Elven lied comes to mind.

Roy Meulblok

I love that the maker of FMA has started a new manga called Daemons of the Shadow Realm. And I am loving that manga greatly so far aswell!

Sean

YuYu Hakusho had a lot of goofy stuff mixed into the serious stuff. Slam dunk is super goofy. Dragon ball of course.

Sean

on this note, 1000000% check out some of the Berserk OSTs, mainly 'Guts', 'Earth' and 'Forces'.

Aiko

What days do you upload fmab watchalongs? or is it not scheduled?

Ttsukasa

Long shot G.O.T but please react to QUEEN BEE "MEPHISTO" MV, The MV is amazing and the song in the MV has a few changes that make it so much worthwhile.

Silvio Guidi

rememmber that we already saw in episode 2 or 3 that ed during the mother transmutation has seen all the information in the world (remember when he asked to see it a second time?)

Miklar Sihn

The only problem with Berserk is that we dont have a good adaptation yet. The adaptations simply cannot keep up with how alive the art of the manga feels.

Andrew Lindsey

This is true. Sadly. Wouldn’t it be great if the same studio that gave the adaptation of made in abyss, started to make berserk? They put in all of the beautiful art from the manga into the anime, and they did it flawlessly in my opinion.

Daniel Golas

Noone ever forgets ep4 tbh

Daniel Golas

Btw you are lucky you watch FMAB because in original FMA this Tucker and Nina thing was even worse, they really did everything to make this as traumatising as possible

Ishtar1339

If you love this series, then you would definitely like the anime called The Seven Deadly Sins.

Ameth

Mustang was the one in the flashback blowing things up
