Deception

You should start with Iron Blooded Orthans (also gundam), should check the openings and endings first tho.

Everyone has shared a lot of good info. I agree that most gundam is stand-alone. I would absolutely recommend Gundam 00 as a first series personally, 2 seasons and a movie. Witch from mercury is currently airing but i havent watched it as im currently working through every gundam series in release order. Witch from Mercury and the other newest release "Iron Blooded Orphans", are both a liiiittle bit divisive in the communities, but IBO is good, and I know WFM has a dedicated following right now. Another recommend starting point just so you get a bit of "Oh this is where it started?" without a certain amount of DRAG as episodes transition, is just "Mobile Suit Gundam 1" then 2 and 3, which are movies that compile the plot of the original series. Three 2 to 2.5 hour sit downs that get you the entirety of "where it started" and lets you appreciate the new stuffs technological updates and such. All mecha is always political commentary. Not necessarily on a singular event, but on hypothetical global politics. 86 is mecha without the typical "Humanoid" robots you find in either Gundam, Code Geass, or other less known like Aldnoah, but 86 is an EMOTIONAL journey. You'll love it too.

Mercury is a standalone series, you only need to watch it, nothing else before it. It's really good, you should watch it.

A series I need to get back into lol. I used to watch this series in the 90’s, and really enjoyed it. I have fond memories of the Gundam series watching it with my older brother. My list of must watch keeps expanding it seems like.

Roy Meulblok

I love all 4 songs! My introduction to gundams was Gundam Wing and this day its still my favorite gundam series.

Frentzy

"watching 86 on twitch" what? didn't it lose in the first round?

For first mech anime I would personally recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, it's one of the more widely known for a good reason. Alternatively I would say Code Geass, and for Gundam specifically my vote would have to go Iron Blooded Orphans, I would love to see your reaction to it. Witch From Mercury is good, but it's also an ongoing series where as IBO is finished (both are standalone though).

Adam

You should consider reacting to some lesser requested anime openings as well. Maybe make a list of all the openings requested excluding the top 10 or so and use a random number generator to randomly select a series. It would give you a chance to see some less mainstream series

Victoria Pritchard

My first mech anime was weird Lol, medieval setting with a mech powered by dragon hearts, it was called The vision of escaflowne, remember watching it in the late 90s.

BlackCat97

Plese react to the openings and endings from March Comes Like a Lion as an incentive, the band Bump Of Chicken sings some of them.

Vladilena Milize

Nah, Darling in the Franxx is the way to go

Pilot_CT12

Gundam was all I ever wanted but did u have to do this during work hours? Why u torture me like this lol jokes aside you should try Iron Blooded Orphans ops and eds next, theyre by man with a mission

Pilot_CT12

Witch from mercury can be watched by itself without knowledge of anything else as it is its own self contained universe. If you are going to watch it make sure to watch the Prologue episode first since its a prequel right before episode 1

Subaru130

It would be awesome if you reacted to all of the Gundam OPs like you do for other longer anime series. I'm only just starting to get into Gundam myself, but the second series, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, has such a good first OP.

I think Witch from Mercury is a decent start. Stand alone series but really introduces the concept of the "Gundam Wham Episode," really well.

Cédric Michaud

You could watch Plastic Memories opening and ending. There is also Hell's Paradise opening and ending, a seasonal anime season 1 that is currently ongoing. You could also watch Bofuri: I don't want to get hurt, so I'll max out my defense openings and endings. The Devil is a Part-Timer could also be another anime you react to its openings and endings. There is so much more anime you could react to their openings and endings, but making a list would be too long for now.

Christian Diaz

So happy you did this love these openings ❤️

Harley Burnie

PlasMemo is a great OP, but....you remember the special trait about it? It's a unique each episode. Luke, if you ever make a video of the Plastic Memories OP, do make sure you follow it with the compilation of all 12 episodes.

86 is a mech anime, basically THE mech anime you should start with. It is a masterpiece, and it would get you digging mech battles and drama. I could only watch more mech animes after watching 86. :/ I would LOVE to see you watch the Itaden Deities Only Know Piece OP and ED. There's just one of each, the OP is the boppiest of bops, and the ED is fantastic and catchy. Also, have you watched the Spice & Wolf OPs yet? A true anime classic, gorgeous and emotional. Also...Arifureta. All I need to say.

Harley Burnie

G-Witch is a show that has been great, and has really let me down. Right now, it is at a HIGH. Also, finally a yuri Gundam show. With all those fights and wars and teens fighting side by side, it's about time. I know ryo (supercell) from takt Op. Destiny and original Black Rock Shooter song.

Harley Burnie

One last comment. Did you hear about Yoasobi's "Idol" song? It is at #1 on the Billboard Global(ex. USA) Chart, and #9 on the chart that includes the USA!!!! First Japanese language song to ever get to that point! Awesome, right?!?!?

Sei

React to Gundam Iron Blooded Orphas too

Would highly recommend Witch from Mercury but I also hope you'll check out the full version of the second ending cause it is even better

DevilMoon

You should react to the openings and endings of Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans.

Paragon Night

Witch from Mercury is a perfect meta to get into the genre. It might even be too good as it will sque your perception xD

A lot of people have given very good recommendations and have broken down the Gundam franchise in a very easy to understand way. At least that's what it feels like from the POV of someone who has been obsessing over the franchise for many years. I just want to throw my hat in the ring and give you a few pointers if you're really thinking of giving the franchise a taste. First of all, Witch from Mercury: A great series to start with, but not that great if you want to get a taste of mecha anime. WFM is good and, based on the series and movies you've watched thus far, is one you would enjoy since it focuses more on the intrigue between different parties and individuals. It's also one that will pull on your heartstrings. Next, where to begin: Now this one's going to be difficult, honestly, because it all depends on if you want to see where it all started, if you want to get a hint of it or if you just want to get a feel for what the franchise can, and will, bring. My personal recommendation is one that would be hammered down on since it's one of the more disliked series, at least among the ones that are more widely known outside of Japan; Gundam SeeD and Gundam SeeD Destiny. I recommend this one because it gives you both, SeeD borrows HEAVILY from the first Gundam series but is much more modern series as it was released in 2002 whereas the original was released in 79. So you will get a taste of the war sagas and politics that the stories generally form around for the franchise and you will also see a lot more combat. SeeD Destiny is basically the aftermath and continuation of SeeD and takes place not too long after the end of SeeD. So why is this one of the more disliked series? Simply put, it's pretty shallow and there's a lot of unnecessary plot armour. There's obviously more to it, but I'm afraid that would go into spoiler territory. Also, be careful of which version you watch, the remastered version is uncensored, and while there is no full frontal nudity, they're not exactly shy about throwing nipples in your face. It doesn't happen all that often, honestly, but often enough for Youtube and Twitch. A more agreed upon recommendation: Gundam Wing. Most Gundam fans today probably started here. It's a very good mixed bag of what the franchise brings. It has a lot of faction and individual based intrigue while also showing of a lot of combat. This is also one of the more rare series where you will actually get to see characters having to make sure that their Mobile Suits(the name for the giant robots) have fuel and are maintained. It's an older series though, from 95. But due to that you'll also see that it's a lot more gritty than most Gundam series tend to be. There really isn't much negative one can say about this series, and people tend to either love it or have a pretty meh opinion about it. Also, this is one of the few that I've seen where the dubbed version is slightly better than the original version, however, the dubbed version censors blood for some reason. So there are scenes where you should see blood, but the Americans chose to just remove the blood entirely. The more modern recommendations: Gundam 00 and Iron-blooded Orphans. These are, in modern days, two of the giants in the franchise. Both are stand-alone and both are equally great for different reasons. 00 focuses HEAVILY on trying to achieve true peace through the use of overwhelming power and force. Iron-blooded Orphans leans more into the intrigue of what happens after a giant war saga has already taken place and the struggles of those trying to survive and strive in what is left. I will say that I have yet to finish IBO, so I don't have a complete picture of the show, but this is definitely one you will want to watch if you want to see how raw the combat can get at times. This is also one of the fairly few where they use more solid projectiles and heavy melee weapons whereas the more common choice among all Gundam series tend to be more laser-esque. A common weapon that exists in all of Gundam are the lightsaber-like swords they use. Obviously they aren't actually lightsabers, but you can definitely see the resemblance. Other than that, honestly, just pick and choose. The franchise spans all the way from the gritty and dark all the way into the comedic, cartoony and silly. You can do a pretty minimal amount of research and end up finding a series that you'll love. Sorry for the VERY long post, but as a lover of this franchise, I want to make sure that those who plan on giving it a go have as much information as possible.

wildhunt1973

Beautifully written and beautifully said. Every recommendation you gave is exactly the ones I would give and for the same reasons. I might throw in MSG: The 08th MS Team if he wanted to dip his foot into the original timeline pool. Other than that, perfection.

You definitely can watch the Witch from Mercury first, and it would be actually a pretty good start into Mecha anime.

Raghad Alharbi

I would LOVE to see your reaction to it! it's not my first Mecha anime but it's my first Gundam and I am obsessed!

BattleCanyon

I just finished Witch from Mercury and the story was incredible. It has been so long since I fell in love with so many characters in an anime. In addition, the OST hits really HARD, and "The Witch From Mercury" (the name of the soundtrack) is highly recommended if you need some music reference.

Phyllis

Gundam Witch from Mercury takes place in a different and new Gundam Universe so you can start by watching this series if you are interested.
