Your ending thoughts seem to mirror a lot of people. L is a fan favourite, and his death is shocking and I can understand why they chose to do that instead of having a series long Light vs L battle. While I do think the show ends very strongly, it's hard for Near and Mello to match up to L, in part because we don't get to spend as much time with them, but also because Near and Mello are basically two different aspects of L split into two different people, so they come off as lesser than L and don't have L's quirky charisma that made him so popular.

Just had a thought, since Lights father took the eye deal, he died that day. But that means even if he didn't half his life, he was going to die the very next day.

Yeah, I never did enjoy the latter half of Death Note. I could agree with Light's vigilante actions early on to a degree, but pretty quickly he goes overboard, so L seems like the proper protagonist we're supposed to root for. For him to die just like that and then we're left with Light and the pseudo-Ls, it just doesn't hit the same way.

Rick James

The reason people can root for Light still is the same reason you are still rooting for Misa. People can look past logic and horrific actions by glorifying other aspects.

Antoine Jones

watch the live action movies (not the netflix one) they fix that problem and give a better ending while still not taking away from what the anime wanted to achieve

Anacik Gabriel

Also huge plot hole in this episode regarding his eyes, which become more clear after finale

Anarkhie

Yeah the japanese live action movies are actually great.

Anarkhie

The show goes downhill after L dies unfortunately.

I3ladeDragon

A lot of people stopped watching after L died. I will say that this Arc dips into another semi-slow pace, but the ending is worth the investment.

I totally agree, I think it pays off in the end, *especially* with Mamoru Miyano's performance in the last episode--he's a great VA.

I never liked L, to be honest. He was an okay character, and I like him about as much as I like anyone on this show (which isn't much). I like Misa, I like Ryuk, and I like Rem. Those are about the only characters I truly like. But I love the story of the show, and I do enjoy how it was written. When people die in this show, it doesn't really bother me. Then again, I've watched it enough that I know it's coming. LOL.

So the reason that Light wanted someone with the Shinigami eyes on the ground during the operation is because Mello may be there, so they could potentially kill him or at least get his name. A very sad point to Soichiro Yagami's come up if we look deeper into why he died pretty shortly after taking the deal for the Shinigami eyes. Taking into account the travel time to LA it seems possible that Light's dad would have actually committed suicide like he said he was thinking of doing, had Light not formulated a plan that involved him. He saved his daughter but couldn't let go of the shame of letting the notebook fall into the wrong hands, even though in reality it had always been in the wrong hands. On a lighter note though, god damn Matsuda is a crack shot

i have always wondered, how long Yagami Soichiro would have lived if he didn't do the eye deal and cut his remaining life span in half, another couple of days?

Adam

Honestly the only reason I root for Light still is that there's no one else to root for. Near and Mello just aren't charismatic enough to root for this late in the series. L definitely died too early

Majoz

About the deal, they cant trust Kira enough so they had to be sure, light really needed this notebook to be in their hands, and he doesnt care that much about his father

Angelo Marchantt

I'm still rooting for light. It is unfair to say he is doing things only for himself. He is literally creating a better world free of crime. Near and mello are just stones in the way. Yeah he did not say goodbye to his dad or I love you or anything, if you see the big picture, killing mello helps light create a better world for everyone

Bård Fredrikson

I think the right answer is to root for Misa and Ryuk. You aren't wrong in that.

Unpopular opinion but… I LOVE Mello probably for the same reasons Luke likes Misa lol. Also, I have always rooted for Light just for the excitement of following him though this crazy journey. I don’t want him to get caught because I want to see what he will do next. It never occurred to me to root for L since he was acting against the main character. This watch through is the first time I even considered it, but no I’m team Light forever I think.

Sayu is in a wheelchair because I‘d Imagine being confined in a closed space while having a gun fired at you multiple times must be quite the traumatizing experience.

Zorgot

I wonder if it would be better if Light had to face Mello and Near before L, that way it doesn't feel like the show "falls off" for most people after halfway. Idk how it would work but idk just a random thought
