finding the death note wasn't what changed light it was the first two kills, after he killed once he said it could be a coincidence to avoid guilt. then when he killed a second time he had to come to terms with the fact that he killed 2 people, but instead of coming to terms with it he justified it by saying they are evil and deserved to die. the start of the series is light going down the slippery slope of "the ends justify the means"

I think it was the power. Once he realised he had the power to change society he began to think of himself as a god and so petty things like morality no longer applied to him, in fact he was the one who dictates morality. The power went straight to his head and unearthed the inner narcissist that was probably always lurking just below the facade of humility that society demands from normal people. I think if those first kills were really what changed him then he'd have struggled with them more profoundly.

I think the moral is power corrupts, or that people who are genuinely kind hearted, when put into a certain circumstance of power with no consequence, will shift mentally/emotionally whether they want to or not

I think what L picked up on at the end was the fact that she "killed someone" if that was in the recording. The whole story she told was based on her saying she's the second kira and then the corporate kira believing her? maybe im not sure its been years upon years upon years since i saw this!
