The fact that he is charging in there, while not believing a word of what he is saying, lying to these people, for a plan that he doesnt really believe in, is just so darn heartbreaking. Erwin went into this to learn the truth of his world and he has that taken from him at the finish line. Now he has to make a suicidal charge, in order for other people to have a chance to fulfill his dream for themselves.

I personally thought this was the GOAT, just because of how much I cried and respected Erwin. A leader and sacrifice, the orchestra was so on point and the visuals. To see a man understand he is going to die, then have the balls to say "I'm announcing our final operation, line up" and deliver an inspiring speech to bring out the last bits of courage in his soldiers. 10/10 for me.

I don't know why, but the voice actor for Erwin didn't really sell that speech to me. Maybe that's what the author wanted, but if I had heard that speech, I'd be like "Screw you. I'm outta here." This is one of the few times when the English voice actor was better and COMPLETELY sold that speech. It's strange how sometimes the English is better and sometimes the Japanese is better--but most of the time, they're on par with each other.

I just looked at the dub's speech out of curiosity and it's absolute shit. A dub shouldn't change the emotions a scene is trying to convey. That's just as bad as changing the plot.

Also, its crazy to think 2023 finale will be 10 years since the first season! Was in college when first got into this show. We used to wait years till next seasons and parts after cliffhangers, it was horrible ;__;

I never said the scene didn’t have emotions, I said it CHANGED the conveyed emotions. From the few dub scenes I've scene there and there, English Erwin can't even be called the same character as Japanese Erwin.

I think those things was quite obvious, also things like injection sounds on the wall when he said they were 'stabbed' or when ymir ate marcel, it was not so direct but realizing its the matter of WHO exactly she ate to turn back into human was also easy to figure out. So i just think its all because he's not focused so much because recording is distracting him, so he misses out things which he would probably realize watching by himself. Rewinding to read some stuff he missed is also a hint for that :/ He is just forced to split his focus between watching and keeping contact with us so its quite understandable

Honestly, yes. Like the sub is good, don't get me wrong, but--to me--this is one of the few animes where the english dub actually hits soooo much harder. J Michael Tatum as Erwin is just...ugh. The ending of this episode never fails to make me cry like a baby. ESPECIALLY if I hear the speech from Tatum's voice.

I honestly cannot wait to see your reaction next episode. I know for a fact you're gonna flip your shit. There's a reason the next episode is literally one of the most popular episodes in anime history. Also, others have mentioned, I HIGHLY recommend you re-watch this show eventually in the english dub. Some people will swear up and down that dub is only for "amateurs" or whatever, and while there are some legitimate reasonings behind why sub is sometimes better on certain animes, AOT is one of those animes where the dub is just absolutely masterfully done. That speech from Erwin in particular imo hits way harder in English dub (I know that seems impossible.)
