Its very simple. The show is about absolutly nothing. Its pure trash. Its just a parody comedy. But the comedy is extremely childish. And the 10% that has somewhat of a story is good. But its not worth going through that much shit to get something good. Overhyped bullshit show

Gintama is my comfort anime... I rewatch my favourite arcs and episodes every once in a while. It's the only anime I ever rewatch. I find it hard to recommend though... it can be really hit or miss for people.

Gintama is my all-time favorite show but I definitely don't recommend to a beginner. Imagine an alternative world where the Edo period of samurai invaded by aliens and then sprinkled with 90% comedy. The comedy is hilarious if you understand Japanese pop culture, history, news and famous figures because the anime mocks a lot of these things. It doesn't shy away from dirty jokes, blood and gore, etc. But if you're not familiar with these things, you'll be confused. I live in Japan and it's greatly appreciated by middle-aged men because they understand the irony and sarcasm of the anime even though the anime was in a teens weekly manga. You don't watch Gintama for a serious story, you watch it because you can sit back and just burst out laughing. Imagine you're a retired old man, did everything you had to when you were young and now you just don't give a fk. That's what this anime is about.

To explain: It's usually jokes but as it goes on (starting a little ways in) when it takes a turn IT TAKES A TURN. this show has the funniest moments of any anime and some of the most incredible emotional and dramatic arcs of any anime i've ever watched!! But there's a lot of jokes about japanese culture so thats why people are saying don't make this one of your first animes! Definitely put it on the list once you're converted though :D
