One of the greatest comedy and classic anime is called Ranma 1/2. It's very episodic with a very loose overarching story that's mostly driven by character development. One of my favorites of all time

For light hearted comedy Spy Family is a great choice, something more pg-13? Konosuba is great. Rated R? Prison School. All 3 are fun and worth checking out.

my favorite thing about the first episode of chainsaw man was how cinematic everything felt. The animation and art were incredible. The soundtrack was really good too

As far as comedy anime go, Spy x Family is one of the best in recent years. Not that there haven't been other great options, but Spy x Family is more accessible than most for people unfamiliar with the subgenres. Regarding anime with wild tone changes, the only one that comes to mind right now that did that *well* is Hunter x Hunter. There are probably others, but most don't stick the landing.

To answer your question: Yes... many anime does this thing where they completely subvert a certain PG genre.... Most notoriosly at one point was Madoka Magica - a seemingly children series of magical girls untill certain twist and the show's tone completely shifts. Naruto is another example where if youve seen only the episodes they used to air on mainstreem TV channels you would think its for kids... untill it starts showing how cruel the world can be. Theres also titles like Angel Beats, Your Name, Clannad (when you include Afterstory), You could also consider Higurashi, Made in Abyss and many more

You gotta check out all the Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood openings! They are seriously ALL SO GOOD. Just like Bleach's openings!

My kids are loving Spy X Family. Lol. It is about a guy who is a spy, a woman who is an assassin, and the little girl can read minds. Last I knew, only the little girl knows her parent's jobs. Even the parents don't know each other's real jobs. 🤣 The parents don't know that the little girl can read minds, either. It is fun. I am trying to think of an anime that is rated for older people, but you don't see it at first... uh? I can't come up with one right now, but I am sure they are out there.

There are lot of comedy/slice of life animes like "Daily Life of High School Boys (High School boys), Baka to Test (Highschool life), School Rumble (Highschool romance problems), Gintama (Covers almost all genres), Great Teacher Onizuka (Comedy on a Delinquent Teacher who fights gangs) , Detroit Metal City (Comedy on heavy metal rock bands), Nichijou (High School Girls)

Chainsaw man definitely deserves all the hype, amazing anime! Also the OP is FILLED with movie references, search what they are but dont look any deeper, it's also filled with spoilers (the meanings for the references are, that is)
