Just wanted to say that it seems you're watching the blu ray version of season 1, which is good for animation quality, but has some weird issues with subtitles being strangely worded or just wrong. One example is them calling Levi a "Lance Corporal" whereas every other translation calls him a captain.

His rank "兵長" (read as "heichou") is Lance Corporal(or leading private, if you take the literal translation) in the imperial Japanese army, and is his correct rank. He is ALSO a squad captain, so both captain and lance corporal are correct titles for him.
