Everybody it's time for farmland saga

Muligan Shinzuo

My man forgot he watches vinland saga for a second XD. Atleast she got spared a horrible future.

Mad Scientist

They are in Scandinavia.

Whammadoodoo

It's a bit of a thematic shift from the last season but I'm optimistic from this first reaction that Luke would grasp and enjoy the beauty of this arc.

TK

i know ur pushing a bromance between thorfinn and canute but thorfinn was never loyal to canute… he was only with him and followed him around because of askeladd

Dominic

Welcome to Peakland Saga

MaxValion

Luke, let me remind you that Thorfinn attacked his "bro" Canute with a knife. He attacked the heir to the throne of Denmark in front of dozens of witnesses. If anything, him being alive is already nothing short of a miracle.

Yes, bears did exist in Britain in the past. The brown bear (Ursus arctos) was native to Britain and inhabited the island until around the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago. Brown bears were once widespread across Europe, including Britain, but their populations declined as the climate changed and human activity increased. In Britain, bears were an important part of the ecosystem and were likely hunted by early humans for food and other resources. As the climate warmed and human populations expanded, brown bears became extinct in Britain. Today, brown bears are no longer found in the wild in Britain, although there have been occasional sightings of brown bears that may have wandered from continental Europe. Overall, while bears did exist in Britain in the past, they are no longer part of the native wildlife in the region. We do believe that bears were thought to become extinct in the UK in the early Medieval period, around 1,500 years ago.

Subaquatic Toaster

I was wondering why the weird hangup over mentioning bears then I realized he probably didn't know bears were more or less wiped out there.

Subaquatic Toaster

Man was so busy thinking about bears in England he forgot what show he was watching Thorfinn is still short and blond. He also tried to assassinate the defacto king of Denmark (Canute) in front of a whole hall of people. We saw him being dragged away by the guards. It's only because of his relationship with Canute that he's even still alive.

Robert H.

Thorfinn is quite small as an adult. Leif saw him when he was 17 years old. He's not much taller now.

10redturtles -

IDK for sure but i think they're in Denmark

dg_2drunk

Thorfinn isn't short because he's a kid, he was well at the end of puberty in s1 already. He's short because he was malnourished living with the pirates and not accepting their food.

Saiyaman01

Ketils Farm is located in the southern Region of Jutland, Denmark

Sai

Luke and his bears...

Xaniss

pretty sure it's not even fully that.. he's literally just... short anyway

Xaniss

The language at the start was Icelandic, the closest to old Norse. (i think) also where Thorfinn is from.

Yaros Melnyk

It's not surprising to see mentions of bears in a medieval series, as bears and other megafauna once roamed Europe, including Britain, before gradually disappearing. During the late Pleistocene, about 50,000–10,000 years ago, large animals like mammoths, woolly rhinos, and giant deer were widespread. As the climate warmed and human populations grew, these species began to go extinct due to hunting and habitat changes. For example, the last mammoths died out around 4,000 years ago due to hunting and climate change. Woolly rhinos disappeared about 10,000 years ago for similar reasons. In Britain, brown bears, aurochs, and giant deer existed until the early medieval period. Brown bears vanished around 1000 AD due to intensive hunting and deforestation. Aurochs, wild ancestors of domestic cattle, became extinct in Britain around the 6th century AD, with the last ones globally dying out in the 17th century. Giant deer went extinct around 7,700 years ago due to climate change and hunting. This pattern occurred everywhere except Africa; whenever humans appeared, large animals quickly vanished from the fossil record.

PoeSenpai

Thorfinn was 17 at the end of season one and is 19 at the beginning of season 2. Einar is 20.

Petter Turi

It's Old Norse you heard at the very beginning. Interesting hearing it as a Norwegian, since there are some words I recognize, but many that I don't.

Xaniss

the OPs are safe to watch, and the EDs aren't too bad either.

Yami Shoumetsu

So in the first season, we mostly see the things happening in the battles and war. Now in season 2, we will see some of the impacts the war has brought upon normal people.

E

I struggled a bit with the first few episodes of season 2, but I'm soooo glad I stayed. It takes a bit to pick up, when it does though, its an incredible season!!

Macatony

Welcome to peak

Toasterfinal5

This season is almost unrecognizable compared to season 1. For me. That Season was the prelude to season 2. It very much took me by surprise of how much it wrecked me emotionally. Painland Saga. Here we go.

Earthquakeize

Cant wait for you to continue this season. its very different from season 1 but its so good but for different reasons.

L.C.

Wish he had reacted to the ending. The ending is so amazingly well done with coordination to this arc

MoodyBlue

Yeah, the only reason he wasn’t killed on the spot was 'cos Canute had enough goodwill to tell his men not to 💀

Nyarlathotep

You are aware England used to have bears and wolves right? You guys just killed them all off.

Nick

The second op of this season I wouldn't say it's safe to watch until episode 17. The visuals make it pretty clear what's going on. The first op I agree on, and yeah the EDs don't really spoil anything

Nick

Also cool that they made sure to get the pronunciation a lot closer than most shows probably would

Nick

In the same way Canute had to keep up appearances by sending men after Askeladd, he has to punish Thorfinn as well or else he's not acting like a king basically

Zer0

Season 2 is not Season 1.

Zer0

Thorfinn is 155cm/5.08ft tall. By this time he's early 20s. So short and young are still valid descriptions.

Corazon OP

in the collection of vinland saga the last episode was 23 on this patreon no? what wnt wrong here for me and where can i find it? edit: i just now saw that they are in wrong order man im so stupid i couldve seen this a week ago fck me

Ale

This episode after the last manga chapter hurts so bad 😭😭 It's not a big time jump! Thorffin is still young, around 19yo and he is short too, bc of malnourishment he didn't grow that much.

Abe J

ADHD must be tough lol.

Lexi Browning

In my personal opinion, this is the greatest season out of all anime. It really affected me and changed parts of my life in a profound way. You're going to love this

Frentzy

didn't change my life but it's better than season 1 indeed.

Connor Grynol

Yes, committing crimes gives away your location, but Einar didn't have much options. He's a farmer. Not a fisherman, not a hunter, just a farmer. He needed food if he was going to make some distance.

BanTheUndead

A book called "The Name of the Wind" had a quote along the lines of "I wasn't living in a story" when asked why he didn't help his friend from being arrested while talking about his childhood. I think it fits well into that guy with no skills not rising to the occasion and beating the battle hardened Vikings.

Dj

Like you said they're in Alicization 😂

Ryan Palyo

16:00 the quote there basically is comparing a tree to man. A tree cannot grow with infertile land, if it has nothing supporting its life. Neither can a person truly survive with no one around him or a reason to live, aka, he has nothing to live for. So why would a man with nothing to live for live a long life? It's pointing to both Einar and Thorfinn, who have lost so much. Neither has a future ahead of them besides revenge and slavery. One would think they usually wouldn't live long, either fighting for revenge and dying, being a slave, or losing your purpose. A fitting quote overall

Google says that the last mention of bears in England was 1000 years ago, which coincides with the time period in the anime

syaimaral

Good on you Brits for getting rid of the dangerous wildlife in your forests. I can see why taking a walk in the countryside is described like a fairytale by some of your poets. In recent years some country in Europe wanted to reintroduce wolves. The countryside voted no. The city folk voted yes. Since more population density is in cities, you can guess who won. So some of the politicians who were against reintroducing wolves back into the countryside were like oh sure you can have your wolves. In designated areas. Like the city for example, here enjoy your environment conservatism. And so suddenly, the ruling got put on hold indefinitely.

Well I'm not sure where you got your source info, but one of the sources I used was from the BBC that is based on an article published in the journal Mammal Review. A citation from the article: "It is not possible to say exactly when and where bears died out in the wild, as there is little evidence from natural sites, such as caves, fens and bogs. One scenario, based on evidence from a cave in the Yorkshire Dales, suggests the brown bear went extinct in the early medieval period - between about 425 and 594 AD." Again the other remaining bears were imported to England for different reasons, making that the reason for why people know about bears. And it was also important culturally in history sooo that is maybe why they were still mentioned in the source you mentioned😅 Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-44699233

I was pretty confused to when I started, but it will make more sense as we progress through season 2. This is such an awesome arc, not many authors has the balls to do what has been done in Vinland Saga story progression, and I absolutely love it. For anyone watching this for the first time, don't set your expectations high based on any comment, enjoy the show for what it is.

cell

Yea when I later watched the anime and there wasn’t any groping I thought I hallucinated that manga panel 😭

Miklar Sihn

The thing with a longbowman is that you basically had to be able to hold a grown man in one arm to fully draw it.

Miklar Sihn

Wolves are not a danger to humans in... basically any situation where a squirrel isnt also a danger to humans. It basically takes something like rabies to make them dangerous.

Saiyaman01

Yes and no. From a geographical point of view, Scandinavia essentially includes Sweden, Norway and northwestern Finland. From a historical and linguistic-cultural point of view, Denmark is part of it. Iceland and the Faroe Islands are sometimes also included.

syaimaral

I respectfully disagree. Wolves hunt in packs and are territorial. What happens when their population continues to expand and they start spreading outward and making new packs? Sooner or later, they'll reach you.

Andres Bustamante

Is he reacting to one episode each week? No longer two?

Miklar Sihn

It is not that they reach you. It is that wolves are generally in all but the most extreme cases really scared of humans. I had a teacher who had spent real money trying to go to places with wild wolves and then trying to go on walks to meet them. They all hid from her. The issue is that they keep running away. This is because wolves are not actually the top of the food chain. They have many animals that they are scared of, this generally means that they are scared of animals they don't understand. Beyond that, the populations that have lived near humans are scared of humans because of how humans act towards them. Wolves are not a threat in most cases. If you wander into their... i dont know what you would call it in english, but i suppose nesting grounds will do, fast enough that the wolves can't get their pups out or you walk up on a very sick wolf, then they are dangerous. But they are less of a danger than dogs. Dogs are dangerous as they have learned to operate around humans and have built up normal behaviors around humans, so they tend to turn aggressive far more often.

syaimaral

I understand your point. That is true that most animals are wary of the unknown as they should. I was viewing this from the perspective that the wolves territory will generally expand to overlap with human's over time and as they live in closer proximity to humans will learn to not fear them as much and become bolder. I was also thinking if there happens to be a harsh winter, a population explosion of wolves, or the population of game becomes scarce. An animal may be forced to scavenge further for food and eventually encroach on human lands. A third point would be the countryside is safe right now. Why risk introducing a carnivore into the ecosystem?

Lijnaito2021 !

I'm sorry but this first episode was so boring after the epicness That was the finale of season 1. I just couldn't get into this one. The tonal shift is way different

Randomwords4

He accidently uploaded three episodes last week instead of two so he only put one episode this week. Next will be back to two.

Megiddo

Then you are very much better off avoiding this season. This one is a lot more introspective as Thorfinn comes to terms with the hundreds if not thousands of people he has killed or been part of their slaughter during his youth. He's now on the path that Thors wanted him to be on. There are moments similar to the "epicness" you're describing but they are very few and far between as Thorfinn is no longer a viking mercenary so he is no longer ever-present on a battlefield.

Fabien

Longbowmen had indeed slightly different bones because of a lifetime of training. You couldn't train one longbowman easily, England could use them during the 100 Years War because of some circumstances. Well used, they were a decisive advantage that your opponent couldn't even copy (except maybe in the next generation). But they weren't invincible, when the circumstances weren't right (if they didn't have the time to entrench themselves they were fodder like at Patay). Also late into the war, the use of gunpowder in the battlefield (not just sieges), kinda pionneered by the French, severly limited the use of longbowmen, I'd even say they became useless considering their high cost.

Krusigx

Bro is hardstuck on that bear lol
