Hagg3r

fun fact: this battle was actually the first chapter of the manga

noah van den berg

i'd say from this point on this op is pretty spoiler free. so you can watch it safely if you want to

Majoz

Im from norway so all these names are common to hear about in our history, its ask-eladd, idk where people got asheladd from, maybe cuz aske is ash in norwegian, and torfinn you can just say like Tor like in the dark web Tor browser thing, if you arent sure dont mind searching their names up:) and if you do just pronounce it like they do in the country the character is from maybe? Doesnt matter to me but heard people got mad at you bc of it, kinda not cool

Muligan Shinzuo

Askeladd is a fantastic leader. He knows how to keep his man happy and is super smart. The "frog" leader is probably nobility so be careful what you say, he probably has a long line of Habsburg ancestry :D

Saiyaman01

Fun fact: As I indicated in the last episode, here again in my, the German dub, the translation is translated according to the perspective that is taken and the opposing side. When we are with Thorfinn, the Franks speak French and vice versa, Thorfinn speaks Nordic/Norse when he speaks to the Franks. The same thing was done (at least by us) with the synchro of Vikings.

Blink289

I saw the damsel movie it was ok throughout but very predictable and the ending was meh

Matthew Valentine

Askeladd is truly one of the greatest antagonists ever

WuXian Suibian

In Vinland there is more than JUST battles/fights, but some viewer only want to see the fight, they don't appreciate all the character development, plot development and deeper layers to the plot that occur throughout the story.

Subaquatic Toaster

First time watching reactions to this series and being so optimistic that Luke will actually enjoy the shift in season 2. Seems like he's here for good writing which is a good sign

Some0neElse

I dont think a duel between them will be one sided. It is the first time Askeladd actually properly accepted a duel from Thorfinn... giving out his name and his father's name like he would do with someone he consider worthy Also i have the weird feeling that Askeladd is actually preparing Thorfinn to succeed him

axilir21

"Thorfinn's character development is amazing so far" ☺️☺️

Hagg3r

yeah pretty much. it goes to a bit after the duel then a "10 years earlier" and ends at thors death

axilir21

He doesn't mind story oriented episodes, so I have no doubt he will like it

Suhiro-senpai

That would have been awesome, tbh, but I guess it's harder for a JP prod to do that for the original voicing.

Abe J

I hope this message gets to him cause hearing him say ash 20 times is annoying.

Megiddo

So, this episode is actually the first chapter of the manga (which was a very extended length). When Vinland Saga started, it was serialized in a weekly shounen magazine. That's the reason why this episode likely has a much different feel than everything else so far. That's why there were so many exaggerations and what not. It doesn't take long for the manga to switch to being serialized in a monthly seinen magazine and so, when it goes from pre-teed and teen boys targeted demographic to 20's and 30's year old men as a targeted demographic, after that switch is when Vinland Saga is truly at its best.

Frentzy

your way of saying duel sounds like: 'djuel' and sounds like 'jewel'

Aleksi

Orange using geass canceler is extremely stupid when emperor himself has use geass. Shirley now basicly remembers even events when geass was used on her.

Slipstream

Sounds like Luke's going to love season two.

Nick

Yeah pretty much they reorganized it for pacing, although the anime also has some anime original content tossed in like for episode 5. I think that's also why the guy looks like a frog in this episode because that was a creative choice the author made early on and didn't really revisit

brad marsh

Luke likes the battles and when there is a battle he likes it...pfft typical Luke.

rostikowb

I haven't seen the reaction yet, but I will say that I was a little disappointed with this episode when I watched Vinland Saga for the first time. A cartoonish French lord, a portable dracar, and Thorfin the spider man... With what has come before and will come next, I don't understand why this episode was needed at all

Miklar Sihn

Askeladd is based on a likely a-historical character that exists in some versions of the stories of the time. So it isnt something talked about that much and definitely not something i heard about during my education. My first meeting with the idea of him was in Vinland Saga. I am danish btw and my best explanation of the Askeladd name would be a spoiler, so i will not mention it till later.

Frode

i am guessing that they made the french general look wierd/like a frog cus of the in breading that was going on at that time whit the french royolty this is just a gues tho so dont take my word for it idk actually know

Seifren

This episode is actually when the manga starts. I'm not sure why it doesn't start with this chapter and instead starts with like, chapter 3, but this is technically the beginning of the story. I guess they moved it around because they wanted to make it flow better since starting here, going back in time, then going forward again could be jarring. I agree, though. Despite that, the content isn't as good and this is the only episode in the entire show I don't care for.

Rob

Well, from what we saw from Thors we knew we would have some "unrealistic" moments in battle, it's part of it. And we get some more later on with you know who (let's call him Mr big dude) !

Nero Integrate

The way I see it Askeladd probably doesn't even know himself how to feel about Thorfinn. He's raising a fucking terminator who's really handy to have in your army, but the terminator hates your fucking guts - not the best.

rostikowb

@Rob I don't quite like it, but I understand that the author was inspired by the Viking sagas, where there were exaggerations. But as far as I know, those guys from Askelad's gang are not so powerful that they can carry a drakkar in their arms, it's not an exaggeration, it's something on the level of Marvel. And we know that even though Thorfin is skillful, he could not jump 10 meters in height before or after. So if this is the first chapter of the manga, I think the author overdid it with superpowers at first and then calmed down a bit. I have fewer problems with Thorkell and Thors, they are the best of the best, and judging by their powers they are somewhere 2-3 times stronger than the strongest real person on our planet, which I can accept as for heroes of semi-mythical ancient times. As for the French Lord, I understand that the author wanted to show the consequences of the degeneration of the offspring of the nobility after incest, but he overdid it in my opinion. I would have less of a problem with it if the show didn't seem so realistic. For example, my favorite anime is AOT, and I don't have a problem with vertical maneuvering equipment because in the context of the show it didn't look weird Vinland Saga is still number two in my personal top, so don't get me wrong, I just think that this particular episode is a little bit out of the general concept of the two seasons of this anime. Because the first 6 episodes set the stage for this to be a serious show about serious topics, and then episode 7 happens, which, as I said, in my opinion, is a bit off the mark

Rob

That's fair, I've got to agree haha

Regentas&Waristheonlyanswear

Crossbows were invented long before the Viking times, can't remember the exact dates but late roman armies already had them. They were weaker and less durable and the range was not big but they were indeed a thing by that time.

Stefan

Beware of the Hill Dragon and ground boats! Ghero-Ghero sucks from the beginning to the end. Thorfinn has enabled terminator move. Askeladd best king!

Markus Wallin

Vikings have always been moving ships past waterfalls etc. Usually using logs that they rolled the shipps on etc.

まき のり

"Why does he look like that?" Because he is French.

Kieran O’Neil

Objectively Thorfinn is not a good character right now and doesn't become a good one until S2, yeah he has cool fights but he isn't a good character by any means, also he has had no character development either yet so no idea why you say that.

Jose Zeledon

do you know what "character development" means? he didnt started as that cold teen soldier without any emotions other than hatred, rage and the wish for revenge

Kieran O’Neil

the hatred, rage and wish for revenge is what BEGINS his “character development”. he stays the exact same throughout s1 so…

Fabien

One of those "inbred" nobles will conquer England just 50 years later. And that guy wasn't royalty. Also all royal families in Europe were the same in terms of inbreeding. The real reason is just that it was the first chapter of the manga, the mangaka switched for a slightly (only slightly) more realistic style later on, at the very least there was less cartoonish characters.

Fabien

Those few chapters (that ep+next ep) were very good in the manga (even if it was as irrealistic), because of the mystery around what happens. It's the first chapter of the story, and you don't know who Thorfinn or Askelad are. You don't know why he's asking for a duel, and the reveal is very well-done. It was the PERFECT introduction for those two characters (the flash-back happens just afterward). Everything that made those few first chapters entertaining is gone here as the anime chose a chronological order instead of the narrative order of the manga. It's true that the author chose a slightly less cartoonish style for the rest of the story. But regarding the battles, sorry but they were never meant to be realistic in Vinland Saga. They'll continue to feature people with superhuman strength. But it was always that way.

Fabien

There's a little historical inconsistency here (which wasn't visible in the manga as the narrative order was different): they call the Danes/vikings "normanni" (Normans), but by that time Normandy has already been well established for more than one century, protecting France from the Vikings, and "Normans" was the name of the people living in the duchy of Normandy, not really of nordic vikings. Vikings were indeed called normans at first in France, but not at this point anymore, wrong century.

Vicente Gómez

This episode was just bullying to France. Love it.
