Patreon Fee Changes (Patreon)

As you may have heard by now, Patreon is restructuring how they charge credit card fees to shift more of the onus to patrons. Supposedly, this is so they can better handle different types of pledges (you can read the full blog post here).

What this means for patrons is that you will now pay 2.9% + $0.35 for every pledge you make. So, for the following pledges:

• $1 Patrons will pay $1.38
• $5 Patrons will pay $5.50
• $10 Patrons will pay $10.64

Changes will impact new patrons after December 18th, and existing patrons starting January 1st.

I'm not particularly thrilled by this, as both a creator and a patron. I've written to Patreon to share my thoughts on this, and I'd encourage you to do the same -- except that it looks like the site is currently closed to feedback. I wouldn't be surprised if Patreon delays these changes on account of the blowback they've been getting, but I'd be equally unsurprised if they plow ahead anyway.

So, what does that mean for this Patreon?

The fact is, I'm not seeing a whole lot of options right now. Many popular sites like Gumroad don't permit adult content, not to mention Patreon's setup for monthly pledges is pretty hard to beat. I have two other day jobs I juggle, so being able to upload and schedule content quickly and efficiently is very important to me. I'm still planning on selling completed comics separately, but that is not intended to replace the monthly pledge system.

I completely understand if you feel you need to adjust your pledge or cancel. For patrons who are willing to stick through these changes with me, I will lock in the achieved goal of "2x the writing on Saucy Sketch Tuesdays" for the next 2 months (through end of January) in the event that the pledge total drops below $200.
