I get asked about drawing faces alot and I explain one thing that I'm told people enjoy in my work is life, I put character into my people so the come alive on the paper. Now that's not something you can teach, that's a skill that you get or not. I've read alot of comics where all the characters are blank, no life inside them.... But what you can do is practise faces. This is Darth Nala... I think she just goes by Nala now. I follow her on Instagram along with alot of other babes who have expressions. I practise by drawing them. But I also do it from my own imagination. A good test is to get a sketchbook and just do fuckloads of mouths, as many as you can, all doing different things. No heads or anything, just mouths. Then try the same thing with eyes and eyebrows. The importance of the sketchbook is when you return to do more, there's your old ones looking at you. I've got some REALLY shit ones in my sketchbook next to incredible ones. You need to do it over and over again because your learning what works. Don't be afraid to look at others mouths. Look at the difference between Skottie Young's mouths compared to J Scott Campbell's. There are NO RULES in art, look at those surrealism lovers!!!
